I wanted to broach a difficult issue. One thing I have seen time and time again, no matter which forum you go on, is intellectual pride. However, I have never really heard anybody preach on this.

Do people think that intellectual pride, to some degree, was a problem that afflicted the religious authorities, both in Jesus' time, and for instance, in the gainsaying of Core?

Did the authorities murder Jesus because they hated being made to look and feel inferior, at all levels, but intellectually too?

Does anyone think this is something that hasn't, (or has), received adequate attention at the pulpit?
 
I think by all means that they were steeped in pride. They most definitely had envy from which pride may be the root of this envy.

Mark 15:10 (NASB)
[SUP]10 [/SUP] For he was aware that the chief priests had handed Him over because of envy.

It is the same today amongst us in our Christian world - there are those that are moved with envy when they see someone getting attention from others that they used to get.

There are those that think because of their religious training that they can "lord it over" other people's faith if they believe something different than what they do.

It usually manifests itself with mockings, name-calling and insults just like the scribes and Pharisees did to Jesus and others that had contact with the Lord.

Envy is simply a work of the flesh and a sign of a baby Christian as 1 Peter 2:1 reveals.

It may not get much attention from the pulpit because some of them are guilty of it. It is something all of us need to guard ourselves from.

God made foolish the wisdom of this world, that's why it's not wise to seek wisdom and understanding in God's word from carnally minded and worldly men who have not the Spirit of Truth and Wisdom in Christ.

1 Corinthians 1:20
Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world?

1 Corinthians 3:19
For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He taketh the wise in their own craftiness.

John 9:39-41[SUP] "[/SUP]And Jesus said, For judgment I am come into this world, that they which see not might see; and that they which see might be made blind.

Good day Zeek,

First of all, the religious authorities killed Jesus because it was prophesied. The religious leaders loved the most important seats in the synagogues, the places of honor at banquets, praying out in the open to be seen by people, disfigured their faces when fasting to make it appear that they were fasting and to be greeted in the market places as Rabbi, etc. They loved their positions in respect to the people as being superior, being separated from sin or so they thought. So they did all of those things for their own glory.

When Jesus came performing those miraculous signs, teaching the people with authority, while rebuking the religious leaders, they were jealous, because Jesus was undermining their positions as being the religious leaders, God's elite:

"Then the chief priests and Pharisees convened the Sanhedrin and said, “What are we to do? This man is performing many signs. If we let Him go on like this, everyone will believe in Him, and then the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation.”

The religious leaders did not understand the two prophesies regarding the Messiah, one as the suffering servant to take away the sins of the world and the second when he returns to the earth as King of kings and Lord of Lords, to end the age and establish his millennial kingdom.

Regarding intellectual pride, though I'm sure that it exists, I would not confuse it with those who know the word of truth and speak it with boldness:

"All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work."

I believe that Satan wants to replace God, and he uses his wiles to tempt people – especially church people – to do his bidding. He puffs some of them up with pride, causing them to forsake God’s commandments in the pursuit of self-aggrandizement.

there is one think that is certain during all the hours I have spent studying the Bible. 6,000 years ago, from the beginning of Adam and Eves downfall till today, Mankind has not changed ONE BIT.

So YES, I think it definitely needs to be preached about more often. :o

There was certainly pride involved. But the real reason was job security......

"If we let Him go on like this, everyone will believe in Him, and the Romans will come and take away both our position and our nation.” John 11:48

Yes,and If It was presented to the saints In love,It would be received well as something needful to know and not something that gives a feeling of chastising because his wife made him mad so he's taking It out on me,so to speak.:)

No doubt pride is a big problem in many churches. Many brothers (pastors included) and sisters seek Bible knowledge only, and never dive into their hearts to seek the face (presence) of God.
 
It is written, "Do not destroy yourself with what is falsely called knowledge." I sent an email to a sister just thismoring, I was lamenting how so many folks think they can approach knowing Jesus Christ as an intellectual...now just think about that! (I know you already have Zeek.)
