As one who constantly searches his heart one question I am always asking myself and God is what does it mean to be Christian? What makes a true Christian? There are many answers from different people some would say to be obedient and study the word some would say to be holy and live a holy life others would say to serve God and others and while all of these are true they are only part of the answer at least to me.

To this day I still ask myself this question and I ask myself am I a true Christian? What means to be a Christian what it means to be strong what it means to be holy and righteous these are questions I think are healthy to ask and ponder

True Christians sounds like the title of a horror movie or grim documentary about Christian extremists.

True Christians sounds like the title of a horror movie or grim documentary about Christian extremists who go too far.
I thought it was a reality show.

And... not a good one.

Well, one that is easy to address is a word that we have, as we have so many Biblical words, distorted. It is the word, "Holy."

It means, simply, "set aside." But, we have tried to make it out to mean "morally exceptional."

You know something I never understood is why we have this habit of making something simple into something very complex. Like the word holy what is holy what does it mean to be holy are we holy if we do this or that? can we as sinners be holy as god is holy or is god speaking of holy as more of us blanketed in his holiness and so on and so forth.

It's ridiculous really how we can turn something so simple into a complex mess such as grace or love or christian no wonder people can never tell which religion is the correct one these days

A true Christian makes mistakes
A true Christian gets upset
A true Christian is capable of saying hurtful things
A true Christian can get very opinionated
A true Christian does point out other's mistakes etc etc

A false Christian thinks the above means someone is not a true Christian,
but then wouldn't that mean they might just be a true Christian as well. :)

Oops now I've gone and stirred it up. Lol

oh yeah

sounds just like someone needing redemption to mwe

wait a minute

doesn't that line up???

True Christian? If there's a true Christian, there must be a false one as well.

But really, either you are or you aren't. What it brings to mind though is that in today's world, there are those who parade around as Christians, but are not.

Paul, Peter, Jesus warned us that this would happen. We will have false teachers, we will have false prophets, we will have false brothers among us; wolves dressed as sheep that desire to devour the flock of God.

The tares are among us and will be separated at the end, the sheep from the goats.

The OP makes me think of this scripture; comforting words from our Lord and Savior.

John 8
31 So Jesus was saying to those Jews who had believed Him, “If you continue in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine; 32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.”

John 15:
8 My Father is glorified by this, that you bear much fruit, and so prove to be My disciples.

That reminds me of a song by Mel McDaniel where he is singing "you sneaky thing, you", but I can't remember the name of that song.

It reminds me of a Jackson Browne song that would never make it on this site.

How does that term strike you? (Or any of the many other similar statements of qualification?)

Truthfully, it pretty quickly turns me off to the rest of what the person is saying or writing.
I agree with you Willie-T. And I would say that pride in it's boldness and/or sarcasm in it's subtlety can both become an extreme turn-off.

I think that all of us who daily hope in the saving grace of Jesus Christ our Lord, aim each day to simply be more like Him. Christian, right? "For the just shall live by faith." Sounds simple, but to die daily is no easy task.

But I do know one thing, as much as we are encouraged in the gospel of grace, we are likewise admonished in 1Jn 4:1 to test the spirits. So I think it important, but only as much as we are able; to bear with our "True" Christian brothers and sisters in their day of pride. For I know I've had mine and I suspect many have struggled here and there with "just a tad bit" of highmindedness or self-righteousness "in Christ" (because surely we're only boasting in Christ, right?).

It's not easy to try the spirits especially as newborn babes, but Jude makes a point to keep us in mind of this thing, "Jud 1:3b-4 Contend for the faith once delivered to the saints. For there are certain men crept in unawares, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ."

So if anyone discount your authenticity in Jesus Christ, the only name under heaven given among men whereby we must be saved; Stand still and know that He is God (Psa 46:10).

"Gal 6:1-3 Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, you which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, that not you also be tempted. Bear you one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ. For if a man think himself to be something, when he is nothing, he deceives himself."

GOD IS LOVE!

Miri- That's what I was trying to say in Post #33. Two very different styles. Same message. God is good. Needless to say I like your post.

I've run into Christians who don't believe me when I tell them certain celebrities are Christians. They say "No way is _____ a Christian"! They are confusing behavior with belief. A Christian is simply anyone who believes in Christ. Their past or present life style may be pretty wild, but they have believed in Christ.
I hear what I think you are trying to say Pemican, but there is a boundary somewhere that the Holy Spirit establishes.

Luk 4:41 And devils also came out of many, crying out, and saying, Thou art Christ the Son of God. And he rebuking them suffered them not to speak: for they knew that he was Christ.

Jas 2:19 Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble.

Is there anyone out there who actually claims to be a false Christian?

Not being sarcastic or anything, just a passing thought.
I thought I was one for a little while. I just couldn't be sinless before God and I thought all 'true' Christians could...

I think there is more of a 'boundary' that men make by taking certain, selected Scriptures, and declaring them to be "Holy Spirit mandates" on how a Christian will look.

Sadly, there is a percentage of people who say they are Christians whom God may take umbrage to their self identification. What is a true Christian? One of the best short definitions I ever heard was if Christianity were a crime, is there enough evidence to convict you?
Who among us is sanctified?
Or Consecrated?
Whom among us has melded their personality with Christ?
Ah..... but, how many of us are eager to tell God to get out of our way, so that it can be US replacing Him, and taking the umbrage as if it belongs to us?

I find myself asking, "Is the 'Christian' I am operating as, something you can work with and through, Jesus?"
