from post # 138
"is this legitimate?"
Why would you post something and ask if it's legitimate?
Why wouldn't you check it first, before posting?
Maybe we post before checking because we DON'T WANT TO KNOW if it's false?
I checked it... it took an entire 5 seconds.
Are we all so afraid of the truth... that we can't give the truth 5 seconds of our time?
FACT CHECK:
1. Trump DID say the above things, in a humorous context, and in different parts of the speech. These sentences were clipped together from different places, and taken out of context.
A. It's not a bad idea to make jokes if half your crowd is probably hostile.
B. I'm not going to account for the quality, or the propriety, of these jokes... but making a joke, in itself, isn't inherently evil.
C. If you don't like the jokes, that's fine. But let's at least take everything in context, and look at things fairly.
2. These quotes were cut from different places, and cobbled together OUT OF CONTEXT... WHILE IGNORING EVERYTHING SERIOUS THAT HE SAID.
This was obviously done with intention, and malice, to make him look like an oaf.
I get it.
Nicely done.
3. Then these HUMOROUS STATEMENTS from Trump were juxtaposed next to A SERIOUS STATEMENT from Obama's speech... carefully avoiding anything STUPID Obama said in his speech.
We didn't pick out any humor, or stupidity, from Obama's speech... we only cherry picked a particular thing that sounded really presidential.
4. I could just as easily make Obama look stupid by CREATING THIS SAME MEME IN REVERSE:
using a serious statement from Trump's speech, and a STUPID statement from Obama's speech...
and then placing them side-by-side to make Obama look like an idiot.
If someone wants to send me the above photos without a text overlay... I'll show everyone how easy, and fast, this would be.
We could easily just cut different text, and do this whole meme in reverse.
Couldn't anyone figure this out just by looking at the meme?
Isn't this just obvious???
Really?
5. The parts LEFT OUT of this meme were significant:
there were about 2 pages of text, where Trump spoke about religious freedom... a very serious and intelligent sounding speech.
6. Here is the beginning of the TWO PAGES OF SERIOUS SPEECH... the part the meme left out.
"I was blessed to be raised in a churched home. My mother and father taught me that to whom much is given, much is expected. I was sworn in on the very Bible from which my mother would teach us as young children, and that faith lives on in my heart every single day.The people in this room come from many, many backgrounds. You represent so many religions and so many views. But we are all united by our faith, in our creator and our firm knowledge that we are all equal in His eyes. We are not just flesh and bone and blood, we are human beings with souls. Our republic was formed on the basis that freedom is not a gift from government, but that freedom is a gift from God."
Conclusion:
A. This meme was just stupid... stupid and misleading.
B. We need to check things BEFORE POSTING THEM... let's GIVE THE TRUTH 5 SECONDS OF OUR TIME.
C. I'm not calling Trump a great Christian, I don't know anything about his personal faith...
but I AM saying this meme was stupid, and we need to fact-check things before posting.
Posthuman,
I think everyone around here generally likes you and appreciates you.
So I'm not personally after YOU for posting something without fact-checking.
I have no problem with you.
EVERYONE else does the same thing.
Everyone, on all sides, does this.
But how about we All try to fact-check things before we post?
I think everyone, on all sides, can do better.
