10 years later, the real story behind Columbine - USATODAY.com

While I just came across this, it was released about a year ago all of the myths surrounding the Columbine Incident and I have to say it was an interesting read. Apparently they were not targeting any particular group, not gays, minorities or even Christians. They had one goal in mind, which was to achieve a higher body count than the Oklahoma City bombing and were killing at random... even their friends who ran up to them thinking they were pulling a prank with paintball guns.

The reason I highlighted "The girl who said 'yes'" is because it was apparently fabricated. There is zero evidence that it ever happened. It was used by the local churches and press to rally support for the students. The girl who supposedly said this was represented by religious groups as a martyr in the shooting.

I'm curious if you feel this kind of fabrication should be considered positive or negative. While it may have strengthened the faith and resolve of many Christians, a book was even written about it, can you really stand behind it knowing this is completely false? This reminds me of the propagated myth of Charles Darwin's deathbed confession which is also completely unfounded.

What is your thoughts and feelings?

I'm pretty sure Columbine happened. I may be wrong but I haven't seen or read anything about it being "fabricated" or that many Christians were "strengthened" by the event.

Why should one article 10 years later prove all prior beliefs to be "completely false?" Is it possible that the author might have an agenda?

Often in our modern - and godless society - we get these types of articles dismissing the traditional account, making those Christians look stupid and outdated for holding the perspective that they did. The truth is then brushed under the carpet over time.

This may be the truth, but since we'll never know for certain, let's not take it as gospel truth.

It wasn't because of one author, it is directly from the evidence gathered from the entire case and the fact the there is no evidence what so ever of that particular incident. Also, I never said "All prior beliefs" are false, I specifically stated that it is simply that one tale.

This is the first source that turned my attention to these false details that were propagated by the mass media... like saying the kids were goths and the whole "trench-coat mafia" scare and that playing the video game "Doom" was a prime proponent in causing their actions. Apparently the kids weren't reclusive either, as the media tried to pound into our heads. Is it so hard to believe that most of this was meant to play on our fears and sympathies?

Think of the whole drawn out debate about vaccines causing autism which was sparked solely on the testimony of a single mother who told the media that her son's vaccines caused his autism, all of whom's accusations have been proven entirely false. Regardless, it was created and touted by the media as a huge controversy under the guise of evidence (however unfounded or ignorant).

And to the person up top, I never said that Columbine never happened...

if that story was not true it would have been known yrs ago!

Columbine shooting never happened??!! Are you sure about that? If you are, you may want to let the families of those who were killed on that tragic day know. Then explain to them why their loved ones have not been home since that day And while you're at it, maybe Oklahoma city and 9/11 never happened either!

I'm sorry, but whoever said it never happened is lying. I have no idea why other than that they are sick and twisted.

I remember that day clearly. Sitting at home watching the horrible event unfold and wondering if I'd see some of my family and friends again. No, news reports are not always accurate and yes, sometimes the truth is embellished. However, while it was not Cassy that stood up so boldly, there was a girl who did...the name was just wrong.

And while at first churches were flooded as after any tragedy, more people found their faith shaken than strengthened. That awful day will forever be burned in our memory and it is generally followed with a questioning God as to why and how could He have allowed it.

I don't think you guys understand the original post. There was a story from Columbine about a girl named Cassie. According to the story the gunmen asked her if she believed in God, and when she said "Yes", they shot her. Like the article says, there is no evidence that it happened.

If this story was made up by people looking for a martyr, then I think it's a negative thing. If it was just a story that came about from different eye witness accounts than we can't really blame anybody. Even if it didn't happen though, I still think the story can be inspiring. Just because it may not have happened in Columbine doesn't mean it isn't happening in other parts of the world all the time.

Here's a song by the band Flyleaf called Cassie:

thank you socperkins, for yelling at people for not really reading the post...

i agree with you as well, that if Cassie's story was fabricated, it would be a very bad thing... if Christians feel that much of a need for a martyr that they would take the tragic death of a young girl and turn it into one fo the biggest news stories of all time, just to say, "hey, look at this CHRISTIAN girl! she believed in what we believe in so much that she died for it!" then I would be ashamed to call myself a Christian...

But, I don't believe it was fabricated... so many people would've had to have been in on it... parents, friends, and countless others... unfortunately... we may never know 'cause one of the people that was there is no longer with us... and i haven't heard anything of the shooters since about a year after the incident...
