I guess at 68, and being locked-up for 25 years, he just didn't know any other way to live.

It happens. People become institutionalized and they don't know any other way of life

I think our jail system is broken...
A judge does not see or live the consequence that they give... For a judge giving 5 years is an arbitrary number... They have no clue how that effects people or what it causes to their mental state...
This combined with judges being allowed to own stakes in Jails, rehab centers, and many other forms of punishments greatly ruins what is to be punishment and makes it into retirement for the judge...
Where I live, all the judges own stake in our local jail, and one judge owns a Alcohol rehab group... Every "drunk" sent to his court room gets sentenced to his rehab which they have to pay him 300 a month + govt. subsidies....

This jail system does not work... I wish Christians had the guts to suggest the Godly method of punishment... Where if you steal, you now owe 3 times what you took... If you rape or kill, you are killed... And if you do other crimes you are beaten in front of the judge, so the judge gets to witness his verdict...
Not only would this keep people in the labor forces, but it would be a far better deterrent...

5 years in jail for raping a 5 year old... Or getting the electric chair...
10 years in jail for drugs... Or getting 10 hits....
1 year in jail for stealing from bank... Or owing 3 times you stole from the bank...

I can understand your frustration, but I suspect you could benefit from working a little closer with a broad range of offenders. LOL

I'm curious, when a person is released from prison in the US is there any rehab?

Just wondered because in the UK as they approach release, many are transferred to
lower security prisons. They are let out on day release, some have training,
others are encouraged to find jobs. I have a relative who works in one of these
prisons. They get jobs leave in morning and return to prison in the evening. Then
are eventually released. A lot of it depends on the length of the sentence.

For shorter sentences they are released with minimal intervention, although young
offenders are put up in communal houses to prove they can live in society. Then eventually
they are given a flat of their own.

Many others are released early on probation for good behaviour and/or with electronic tags.

While in prison they are given help to get off drugs.

The success of this depends on the individual, some will do well on release.
Others will end up being repeat offenders, but at least they are given the opportunity
to turn their life about. It depends if they take that chance or not.

It's pretty much the same here. But there is not often too much sincere effort given by the prison employees.

He knew how to function in the society where everything was strictly regulated. Freedom is too much a responsibility for some people. Chaos and anarchy ensue.

There is an argument for sheltered housing in a defined community were you belong
and have a role, rather than starting from scratch at 60+.

But would an individualistic society understand social involvement, beyond educating
the young?

In certain situations, the best thing for the inmate is not being considered. I think this was an example of doing something for the "political optics" of the action, rather than truly trying to determine what would be best for the individual involved.

And here I thought in the interest if fairness and decency you were going to post one of the 3 or 4 things he actually got right in the 8 years he was president.
Couldn't find any.

Releasing people for nonviolent offences reduces prison crowding and frees up room for people who need to be there like violent criminals. The War on Drugs is a scam but that's another topic

I think that the bird man served his time in Alcatraz and not Shawshank.

I recall a scene in Shawshank when the man being spoken of opened his jacket, and showed his pet bird.
