Who is to say you cannot do both? I mean I study the bible and constantly seek to know God and to grow closer to him but I play video games as well mainly pokemon. I mean if we are talking about why do that kind of numb minding stuff instead of reading the bible then we have to consider that watching t.v. is same thing or watching videos for that matter in fact being on your phone does this as well as even the most simple of cell phones sends of the tiniest radiation that we expose ourselves to every time we look at it
Its my opinion that if Christ is truly the epitome of beauty and perfection, there is no reason to turn your gaze from Him. if you are on fire for Him, all you think about is Him! Psalms often talks about meditating on the law day and night! But I know that we all have different walks with Him, and he prunes away the areas of our life that are unfruitful to make us even more fruitful. So I don't want to push this abruptly on anyone... though I am quiet sure it is true.
remember the words of Paul, I consider all things rubbish compared to the surpassing worth of knowing Christ my Lord (the Greek word for rubbish is actually somewhat of a heavier term than garbage, as if cursed with disdain)
from my personal experience, the time in my life when I waited for night time to pray to God in the quiteness of my house was the best time of my life... that excitement and building anticipation for Him which was a reflection of my hearts desire for Him as I longed to be with Him... I didn't consider browsing the Internet or TV, it just felt boring compared to listening to sermons, reading the Bible and prayer...
The way I see it, most men would rather go out on a date with their girlfriend than play video games by themselves. How much more so should we desire to spend time with God by ourselves?
Or if would rather play video games, do you dare tell your girlfriend you're not going out because you want to play video games at home by yourself instead? Certainly she would be hurt you choose the games instead of her, how much more so is God who is infinitely better and worthy more deserving of your attention ...
Im far from perfect in this... but I know that as you desire God more, everything melts away... and if you open a door for something to have a foothold in your life which you commit your time and affection to, it can dull your love for God and prevent you from climbing the heights of love that are available to hearts who see all things as rubbish compared to Christ.
A W Tozer said : anything that keeps me from reading my Bible is my enemy, however harmless it may be.
Christians should be known for their radical love for God, for choosing God over the things of this world. "this is eternal life, to know The Lord your God and Jesus Christ whom he sent"
