Hey everyone! I became a born again believer about three years ago. Since then, I've been struggling with having a feeling that God is always disappointed in me. I have this want and desire in my heart to please God, and I just never can seem to do it. I know that I might be placing on God things that may just be in my own mind, but I don't know how to break free from it. I feel like I mess up all the time, I'm a hypocrite and not doing anything right at all. I want God to say to me well done when I come home(to heaven), I want to make Him proud, and i don't want to lose my salvation. I just can't make him proud of me
, I'm trying so hard to be a good christian. Does anyone empathize with me? Anyone have some good advice? Thank you for listening, lol or I guess reading
Phoenix89:
Jesus already nailed the list of things you have to do to be righteous in His eyes to the cross. The whole reason Jesus died for you is because He knew you couldn't do it and had no ability to. God doesn't expect you to be able to follow Him by your own ability. This is why He sent the most wonderful Helper called the Holy Spirit who reminds us of all truth and brings conviction when needed. It is the devil that brings us guilt. This is why the devil is called the accuser of the brethren.
The difference between guilt and conviction is that conviction causes us to want to be closer to God and causes us to repent. Guilt will always lead you into being ashamed of yourself and being extremely introspective. In other words it will cause you to shift your focus completely on yourself and everything that is wrong with you.
But God already knows every little detail about you and isn't intimidated at all by what He sees in you. He already has a plan to deal with all the stuff you are struggling with. If You ask Him to heal the wounds inside of you, you can live with the confidence that He will. He will be the one to take care of all of that. The best thing to do is to focus on Him. Focusing on what you did wrong or even your compulsion to do something wrong will only make the problem bigger than God in your head. This obviously will not help you. But if you focus on Loving God, then nothing can hinder you. It should be all you focus on. When I feel like the scum of the Earth I always turn on worship music and start thanking Him for dying for me and for all the times He reaches out to me, and I thank Him for how good He is.
I can confidently say that He is not disappointed in you. Whatever it is that you did, He does not hold that over Your head, and neither should you. Ask Him for the strength to forgive yourself. He is in fact pleased with you, and you can approach Him with boldness as the royalty of heaven. You start out each day accepted and dearly Loved by your Father in Heaven. You are His daughter whom He Loves and nothing will ever change that.
I encourage you to read the story of what some people call the Prodigal son. I feel this is poorly named, because the best part of this story is about our extravagant Loving Father. Even if you feel like the worst sinner in the world, this story shows how our Father in heaven treats those who come to Him in their worst condition. This story is actually about backsliding believers that return to their Father. Read Luke 15:11-32
You are NOT a lousy Christian. Repeat this after me!
1. I renounce the lie, that I am a lousy Christian
2. I renounce the lie, that God is disappointed in me
3. I renounce the lie, that God isn't pleased with me
4. I renounce the lie, that I need to be ashamed for God to accept me
4. I agree with what is true, that my Father in heaven is ecstatic with joy over me!
5. I agree with what is true, that Jesus died on the cross for me, so I don't have to strive to be righteous.
6. I agree with what is true, that my righteousness is based on the what Jesus did on the cross and not on what I do.
7. I am free to live as a daughter of God, beautiful, righteous, Loved, and accepted in His sight, this is who I am!
Amen! It is much easier to live as a Christian when you realize that you are the righteousness of Christ. That is what you launch out of everyday. You don't have to strive to get there, you have been there since the day you invited Jesus into your life. You have a new nature, and the devil wants you to believe that your sin nature is still alive, but Jesus killed it on the cross. The compulsion and feelings that you have to sin are not you. It is the devil wanting you to think it is you, so you feel hopelessly without a remedy. So the next time you feel temptation to sin, you can confidently move on with life knowing that this is not who you are anymore. You are the Father's beloved daughter, the royalty of His Kingdom, a princess :-D
Much Love,
Machew
