Hey everyone! I became a born again believer about three years ago. Since then, I've been struggling with having a feeling that God is always disappointed in me. I have this want and desire in my heart to please God, and I just never can seem to do it. I know that I might be placing on God things that may just be in my own mind, but I don't know how to break free from it. I feel like I mess up all the time, I'm a hypocrite and not doing anything right at all. I want God to say to me well done when I come home(to heaven), I want to make Him proud, and i don't want to lose my salvation. I just can't make him proud of me :( , I'm trying so hard to be a good christian. Does anyone empathize with me? Anyone have some good advice? Thank you for listening, lol or I guess reading :)

We're sinners and it's impossible to please God without accepting His grace. Saying that God is disappointed in you, as a Christian, is a lie from Satan. Do your best and ask forgiveness for sins. Remember God isn't an emotional mess waiting for you to be perfect, He died so that you shouldn't have to be.

Hey! I can tell you I thought everything you are thinking and living..
A few years ago, I sought a psychologist. Throughout my treatment questioned these very issues. I found that often mix our faith (life and relationship with God) with our emotional difficulties. From the moment you surrendered to Jesus, repented of his sins: the Lord will not blame you. He forgets that we are and we did. We do not! The fault is not from God, Jesus provides us with regret, not guilt. Often we feel guilty, why go through in our childhood moments or hear things that make us feel that way. Believe that you are not hypocritical. If you "listen" inside you this, understand that is not the voice of God. In my case, I condemned and that distressed me. I also felt hypocritical, but what resonated in my head were legacies of that one day my mother told me.
Take care! Continue intent on God. He's not a punishing God, evil, but He is a God of love!

Are you sad about anything else in your life? Like has your eating habits changed, are you sleeping more or less then usual? Are you having a hard time concentrating and do you feel anger a lot of the time?

Phoenix89:

Jesus already nailed the list of things you have to do to be righteous in His eyes to the cross. The whole reason Jesus died for you is because He knew you couldn't do it and had no ability to. God doesn't expect you to be able to follow Him by your own ability. This is why He sent the most wonderful Helper called the Holy Spirit who reminds us of all truth and brings conviction when needed. It is the devil that brings us guilt. This is why the devil is called the accuser of the brethren.

The difference between guilt and conviction is that conviction causes us to want to be closer to God and causes us to repent. Guilt will always lead you into being ashamed of yourself and being extremely introspective. In other words it will cause you to shift your focus completely on yourself and everything that is wrong with you.

But God already knows every little detail about you and isn't intimidated at all by what He sees in you. He already has a plan to deal with all the stuff you are struggling with. If You ask Him to heal the wounds inside of you, you can live with the confidence that He will. He will be the one to take care of all of that. The best thing to do is to focus on Him. Focusing on what you did wrong or even your compulsion to do something wrong will only make the problem bigger than God in your head. This obviously will not help you. But if you focus on Loving God, then nothing can hinder you. It should be all you focus on. When I feel like the scum of the Earth I always turn on worship music and start thanking Him for dying for me and for all the times He reaches out to me, and I thank Him for how good He is.

I can confidently say that He is not disappointed in you. Whatever it is that you did, He does not hold that over Your head, and neither should you. Ask Him for the strength to forgive yourself. He is in fact pleased with you, and you can approach Him with boldness as the royalty of heaven. You start out each day accepted and dearly Loved by your Father in Heaven. You are His daughter whom He Loves and nothing will ever change that.

I encourage you to read the story of what some people call the Prodigal son. I feel this is poorly named, because the best part of this story is about our extravagant Loving Father. Even if you feel like the worst sinner in the world, this story shows how our Father in heaven treats those who come to Him in their worst condition. This story is actually about backsliding believers that return to their Father. Read Luke 15:11-32 :-)

You are NOT a lousy Christian. Repeat this after me!

1. I renounce the lie, that I am a lousy Christian
2. I renounce the lie, that God is disappointed in me
3. I renounce the lie, that God isn't pleased with me
4. I renounce the lie, that I need to be ashamed for God to accept me
4. I agree with what is true, that my Father in heaven is ecstatic with joy over me!
5. I agree with what is true, that Jesus died on the cross for me, so I don't have to strive to be righteous.
6. I agree with what is true, that my righteousness is based on the what Jesus did on the cross and not on what I do.
7. I am free to live as a daughter of God, beautiful, righteous, Loved, and accepted in His sight, this is who I am!

Amen! It is much easier to live as a Christian when you realize that you are the righteousness of Christ. That is what you launch out of everyday. You don't have to strive to get there, you have been there since the day you invited Jesus into your life. You have a new nature, and the devil wants you to believe that your sin nature is still alive, but Jesus killed it on the cross. The compulsion and feelings that you have to sin are not you. It is the devil wanting you to think it is you, so you feel hopelessly without a remedy. So the next time you feel temptation to sin, you can confidently move on with life knowing that this is not who you are anymore. You are the Father's beloved daughter, the royalty of His Kingdom, a princess :-D

Much Love,

Machew

Hey. I'm living that now. I'm going to re-dedicate my life to God tonight as a matter of fact. I'm doing the same thing you are. Not everyone is perfect though. Some days are hard and some days are nice. I can tell you a story. I'm in depression because of what is happening. A year ago, I started self-harming myself. I've been doing it for a 1 year and 6 months. It's not a pleasent thing to do. You see, I pretty much blamed God for everything that was going on with me and why I was acting the way I do. I questioned him several times about why I'm on this earth. It's not Gods fault. You've got to make the right choices. As of right now, I'm still on the verge of self- harming myself. i don't think you mess up. You are certainly not a LOUSLY christian. Start looking at things the bright way. Just like the song (Keep On The SunnySide), that's all you have to do. Try to never let anything bad discourage you. Life's much better and happier that way. Read the Bible and get answers to. Follow what God would want you to do. Then see how everything plays out and done. You're great to go. Listen to what your heart tells you. I'm only 19, and I can give good advice. If this helps you any at all, I'm sure you'll be fine. I will be praying for you and your troubles. Stacey

As we steadfastly behold the Lamb of God who has taken away the poison of sin, then our souls will find complete contentment and rest from all toil. Our hearts will become as forgiving and merciful as the meek and lowly Lamb who died for us. (Found this online)

Get your eyes off of you Phoenix! Look up at your Savior! He has overcome the world! His blood cleanses you from all sinful desires!

Just look at Him, and don't take your eyes off Him ever! Never put your eyes on you! The disciples didn't think twice about their sinful state before they followed Christ. They just went after Him and they let Him take care of all of the details.

Remember why the Israelites had to look upon the Serpent that Moses made? Because they were dying from poison. You also are dying from the poison of sin. Take your eyes off your wound and place them on Christ! What if the Israelites had stared at their wound instead of look upon the Serpent? They would have died, and so will you; unless you fix your eyes upon Him who conquered the world, the flesh and the devil.

Turn your eyes upon Jesus
Look full in His wonderful face
And the things of Earth will grow strangely dim
In the light of His glory and grace

Lol, a friend once told me that God was the most forgetful being in the universe. :P It's more or less true. "As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us." Psalm 103:12. God is righteous and just, but He is also loving and merciful. You don't need to earn so many points or do so many good deeds. He knows how broken we are more than anyone. He's patient and understanding.

Does that mean we shouldn't make an effort to be godly? Of course not! But we do so with the knowledge that we WILL slip up, but also with the knowledge that Christ's death covers all our sins. Not just one or two; not just a few. All of 'em.

This article I found yesterday came to my mind as I read your post, phoenix, and some of other people's responses. Check it out. Theology of the Body Institute Is God a Big Meanie... or Something Else?

Don't beat yourself up, God loves ya no matter what.

Thanks Machew, This seriously helped me :) I really am going to try to believe what God says I am, a beloved daughter, even though it's very hard..maybe I can repeat the list of 1-7 you gave me every time i start to feel that way...thanks for speaking truth into my life! God Bless

Are you sad about anything else in your life? Like has your eating habits changed, are you sleeping more or less then usual? Are you having a hard time concentrating and do you feel anger a lot of the time?
Hey KisDawn, I guess you could say my eating habits have changed and i don't sleep as well as i used to... do you think it's connected some how?

Take care! Continue intent on God. He's not a punishing God, evil, but He is a God of love!
Thanks for the encouragement Juju :)

Hey Stacey, I have been struggling a lot with self-hatred as well, I mean i think thats what maybe your struggling with too? I wonder if this comes from us feeling not good enough for God, or feeling like a lousy Christian. But I am going to try to start believing what God says about me, instead of believing what I say or Satan says. That me and you are beloved daughters of Christ. (Read Machew's or QuestionTime's reply they really helped me) Also when I start to feel hopeless about why I am here or bout the future I remember the verses from Jeremiah-For I know the plans I have for you declares the Lord, Plans to Prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future. Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart. I will be lifting you up in prayer!

Thank you this really helped me as well, I love that song, we sing it in church (the turn your eyes upon Jesus one) That story of Moses and the Serpant really helped me see it in a more visual way, I dunno it helped give a picture to how I feel, I will have to go and find it so I can read it, don't know if I've ever read that story. But thank you again for the great encouragement, your awesome

Hey KisDawn, I guess you could say my eating habits have changed and i don't sleep as well as i used to... do you think it's connected some how?

It sounds like you are suffering from depression. That can make you go into a lot of self hatred, it also effects your sleeping and eating habits. If I were you I'd go see a therapist or psychiatrist there are ways you can overcome depression but you have to start acting on it, instead of just waiting for it to go away.

We are all sinners but once we repent and ask God to forgive our sins he does but just because we are saved doesn't mean we are imuned to sin for we all fall short of the glory of God he knows we are not perfect and doesn't ask us to be but we are to die daily to our sins and our selfs now for the guilt part of this that comes from the devil he wants to decive you into believing your not saved that God doesn't love you and your a failure in your walk but he is a liar and you can put him in his place which is under your feet the bible says that he will make your enimies(the devil) your foot stool so put him in his place there under your feet

Are you kidding? I AM you. In fact I just posted about this. About how hard I try and how hard I fail. And about not wanting to be lukewarm and having God to say well done. I posted all this in a prayer request a few days ago. I feel like a failure. I try so hard not to sin and to do the right thing, and not be prideful, and forgive, and love everyone, and be meek, and prayerful, and to have grace and strength, and tithe, and pray and read the bible. And it seems like I fail miserably the more I try. I have given it all to GOD and asked him to make me the way he wants me to be and I still feel like I am not doing the right thing. I will pray for you. I know exactly what you mean.

There is a really great preacher whose sermons I love to watch. His name is Zac Poonen. Anyway, he said in one of his videos that - when he was younger - he once told God he would wait 10-20 years, or however long it took in order to get victory over sin. He didn't give up, and now for many years he has been free.

The Extent Of Christ's Love - Zac Poonen - Video

We need to do the same - not giving up - but continuing forward until we enter into that narrow gate.

Well here's the deal. I think all Christian's wish to serve God well and attain glory of their own in a way. EVERYONE (you have to admit it) wants to be heroic at one point or another, and that's how Christian's are heroic, by serving God and spreading his word, because through that we may be seen as the "hero" when we lead a straying sheep in the right direction. But we CAN'T do it all, we are only human after all. And to be a Christian does not mean perfection, but it means to strive for your salvation, to make way into the eternal kingdom of Heaven. You're doing fine, and I don't think God is disappointed in you at all. Have faith, because God has faith and he believes in you =]

Perhaps the problem is that you are trying? whenever we try to do things it rarely goes well, but when we live in the spirit we have victory. Let God work in you and dont try so hard

The problem isn't that she is trying, as the Bible clearly commands us to 'try.' The problem may be that most people are trying the wrong way. We are quick to grab hold of God's commands and run off to keep them, but we forget to apply God's promises first. Indeed, we must begin with applying the promises to our lives - and then - being enabled by God, we can 'try' successfully.

But also, most Christians today have never properly repented in the first place, either.

James 4:8
Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.
