In this first chapter, Ezekiel introduces us to God.
"one like unto the Son of man"
First A description of the spectacular vehicle that God rides in. (verses 5-10).
The creatures transporting God were cherubim, and they each have four faces
—one looks like a man;the others look like animals: an ox, a lion, an eagle.
The ordinaryangels apparently resemble men. But cherubim are not ordinary
angels—“every one had four faces.”
(verse 13). This must have been most impressive—living creatures
lit up like fire, and lightning coming out of the fire! -so awesome
Ezekiel saw this great, luminous vehicle with wings and revolving wheels
moving at lightning speed. It never had to turn; it would move instantly in
any direction, it looked like torches or lightning darting around.
The God of Exekiel
“And there was a voice from the firmament that was over their heads, when
they stood, and had let down theirwings. And above the firmament that was
over their heads was the likeness of a throne, as the appearance of a sapphire
stone: and upon the likeness of the throne was [the likeness as the appearance]
of a man above upon it” (verses 25-26). Sitting upon this vehicle is the God of
Ezekiel—the great God of Israel whom all the world will one day come to know.
This great God of Ezekiel 1, riding atop this awesome transportation system,
looks like a man. in Genesis 1, God created us in His own likeness and image.
That man is the only creature in the world that looks like God! That many
places in the bible he talks about His eyes and ears and hands and such.
“And I saw as the colour of amber, as the appearance of fire round about within
it, from the appearance of his loins evenupward, and from the appearance of his
loins even downward, Isaw as it were the appearance of fire, and it had brightness
round about. As the appearance of the bow that is in the cloud in the day of rain ,
so was the appearance of the brightnessround about. This was the appearance of
the likeness of the glory of the Lord. And when I saw it, I fell upon my face, and I
heard a voice of one that spake” (Ezekiel 1:27-28). Compare this with Revelation 1.
This is what He looks like and how He travels. How many people know this God?
Ezekiel fell over in shock when he saw this vision. He could do nothing but prostrate
himself before this resplendent Being. And it was then that God spoke to him.
This is the God of the Bible. This is not little Lord Jesus in a manger, or Christ
riding on a donkey. This is the God of Ezekiel and Revelation and the whole Bible!
13And in the midst of the seven candlesticks one like unto the Son of man, clothed
with a garment down to the foot, and girt about the paps with a golden girdle.
14His head and his hairs were white like wool, as white as snow; and his eyes were
as a flame of fire; And his feet like unto fine brass, as if they burned in a furnace;
and his voice as the sound of many waters.
