Avatars and Profile pics…really necessary?

hey guys, im curious… does a user on this site really need a profile pic or an avatar of themself? yes, its good for someone to know what you really look like…but what if you're a drop dead gorgeous and decide to post your pic for your avatar…the next thing you know is that you've got a ton of private messages from guys who cant resist finding who you are? im really hesitant on puting a picture of myself. i know i can always use a normal picture of just about anything but i feel there's no point. im really desperate to edit my profile and put a picture of somesort.
so, what i ask is…what are some advice about how decent your pic should be? and how do you avoid all the attention???

Pictures of yourself are not actually mandatory. If it was, I would've been banned months ago...

I have found, through various women on this site, that once you put a picture up, you will attract the attention of men. How good, or bad, looking you are is irrelevant.
Seems to me you have created and endless cycle. You're hesitant (and rightly so) of pics of yourself, but then you label anything else as having 'no point'. There is a point, though. To express yourself. A picture you like. Something you enjoy. Something that reflects who you are or what's important to you. There are numerous reasons to use something other than yourself, and they are not without point. Whatever you pic represents you before anyone reads a word you speak. I don't find that as pointless.

When I put fun or dressy pictures up, I got all kinds of rather disagreeable PMs. Now, I have a hunting pic up...no one has bothered me ;). Seriously though, don't feel you have to put a picture up. I have a flower pic as my profile, and I had a cute dog as my avatar for the longest time. Or, just have a copy and paste "I don't talk to men I don't know via PM" message like I do, and report the creeps. It has always worked for me.

Make that "I USED to have a flower pic as my profile"...that embarrassing moment when you have no idea what your own profile looks like :p

Considering this site and all of it's contents are regularly indexed by search engines, it would be prudent to be very selective about what is posted to this site. Collectively, the Internet is a den of vipers, so it generally wise to not give reason for the vipers to strike.

Ive actually never really understood the point of using a picture of yourself as an avatar. I mean a part of the fun of a forum is the anonymity. Avatars are great because it gives a face to the person posting, and gives you some identity online, while at the same time not having to put your actual self out there for the entire world to see. Ive always thought it was really weird to use a picture of oneself as an avatar : p

Though, I do use my profile pic to use a picture of me, though I didnt always. But even still, I find it to be an odd thing to do. At the very least, my profile picture isnt the image being shared on every post I make, and its just there for those who take the time to look at my profile. Though it would make more sense to just keep it on my albums I guess : p Might change that one day, when Im more active here again.

Don't worry. You don't have to be stunningly gorgeous, even pretty, even young, or even single to get guys to PM you out of the blue. All you have to do is post a picture of something that looks like a female homo sapiens and some come out of the woodwork for you. Good way to figure out which are the trolls and which aren't, matter of fact.

Now if you do want to be inundated, go with the I'm-a-girl avatar. Most of us (guys and gals) go for something that says something about us, (or in my case, many things about me, but never be fooled into thinking that's all I am), without making it gender based.

Are you amused that despite having the pink name, you aren't getting hit on much yet? I had that laugh a couple of months ago when I did put up a picture of myself. Funny, because it was me 15 years ago. (And there were stuffed animals in that picture too, but few noticed. lol) I really am 61, married, frumpy, and yet, that was the only month strangers PMed me. I swear! I've been a woman since I joined this site. Born one, actually. Yet only the avatar clued in the trolls. lol

I think trolls think girls (at any age) are gullible. Not quite as stupid as they are though.

It's been an ongoing problem for me, but I just suffer through it.

Maybe post something that symbolizes an interest of yours.

Mine is of my abstinence ring. (Yes, we do exist).
