Here in Singles, we talk a lot about our hobbies and interests, and sports are definitely a big area of interest, so this thread will fit right in. :)

I write tons of threads that people might not consider right for "Singles", but I made up my mind a long time ago that, "Hey, I'm single, and this is on my mind, so why not talk about it with other single people? (And, a few married regulars. :))"

If the mods disagree, they can always move a thread.

In 8 years (and several hundred threads later), I can't remember them ever moving any of my threads to another area of the forum, even one I wrote a long time ago about being right- vs. left -handed, and several people asked why I wrote it there. (Though of course, I'm not saying mods wouldn't move mine or any other threads here in the future, but as for this thread being here in Singles, why not?)

I'm not a sports fan so unfortunately, I can't make a worthwhile contribution to this thread, but I'm sure many others here can.

Sports are definitely something single people (and others) would want to talk about, so kudos to Kinda for starting us off!

This is the right area for this thread... but I'm not the right forum member for this thread. In fact I use this cheat sheet a lot:

Actually what I need is a twitter feed that supplies me with one reasonable sports opinion per day, so I would sound like I know what is going on in the break room. Something like:

"The Red Sox can't make the playoffs (championship games) but in last night's win they seriously damaged the chances of the Yankees (longstanding rival team) to make the playoffs."

If I had a twitter feed that gave me something like that every day, I might be able to join in the break room conversations, instead of sitting in the corner with my lunch. But I'm not going to actually get into sports, just to be part of the conversation in the break room. =^.^=

I don't have any specific favourite team/athlete, but I do like soccer. Only European soccer though. I have also recently started getting into the NFL and I'm really getting into it!

I know sports is a "thing", and that's the extent of my knowledge. Oh...I also know the school I attend has a football team or something. Maybe.

who is your favorite player on the Ducks? I like Ryan Kesler....Still upset about the Chris Pronger and Chris Kunitz trades. Never understand why you trade away the best blue liner in the league. Madness!

Favourite sport to watch: soccer and certain classes of auto racing... distinctly excluding NASCAR.
Favourite athletes: Scott Dixon, Ryan Hunter-Reay, James Hinchcliffe (Indy); Lewis Hamilton, any Scuderia Ferrari driver (F1); As for soccer, no particular players as I don't get to see enough of it, though I'll always be a fan of Pele.

Should any wisenheimers suggest that motorsports drivers aren't athletes... you try pulling 5 G's around corners several hundred times in a day. :)

You have apparently never seen my driving. Back when I was playing Gran Turismo 3 on the Playstation 2, my brother rode to work with me and he kept making remarks about me learning to drive on the video game.

My driving is not insane though. It's... um... inspired, yeah.

Does anyone have any stories they want to share about how/why they chose their favorite teams and athletes?

Sometimes the reasons why people root for certain teams (especially if they keep losing) can be pretty interesting...

Haha yeah... hmm I'd probably say Corey Perry to be honest, but Kesler a close 2nd. My favorite Duck ever is Jean-Sebastien Giguere.

Favorite Athletes:

MLB: Kerry Wood
One of my favorites too. Will never forget that 20 strikeout game.

Although I'm a Giants fan, I grew up a Cubs fan and still root for them. Before 1998, I never really watched much baseball, but that was the season that Sosa and McGwire went on their first home run chase. Sosa did this hop after each home run hit and was just an awesome player. That was also Kerry Wood's rookie season, so I became a fan of the Cubs because of those two lol.

I have a good friend who is a lifelong, long-suffering Cubs fan.

I remember when the whole Sammy Sosa bat fiasco was in the news, I used to tease him about all the uses one could have for a corked bat when not at practice, such as using pushpins to post notes on it as a makeshift bulletin board:D, or using it as a stopper for a giant wine bottle. :D

Fortunately, my friend took it all in stride (I'm pretty sure he was used to it), we are still friends, and of course, in the end, he wound up getting the last laugh. :)

Ask any Toronto Maple Leafs (Laffs) fan...

I'm a bandwagon-jumper for the Canucks. If they're doing well, I'll root for them. If their performance is mediocre or worse, I ignore them.
