(I’m going to get knocked down for anything I say, not by you, but I’m going to say it anyways- let the tomatoes fly)...
At my church the front pew is always empty for those who decide to “Come forward as we stand and sing.” People either come sit on the front pew during this time if they are a prodigal son and want to return to the church, or are struggling to quit a sin and request the prayers of the church, or they decided to give their life to Christ.
If someone comes forward, the minister sits next to them and talks to them while people are singing. Then when everyone is done singing and sits down, he addresses the congregation about the matter, and a prayer is given. If it is baptism, the congregation sings another song while they go get dressed in baptismal clothes, and meets the minister in the baptismal tub- which is right behind where he preaches. A couple men remove the potium so that the congregation can see the person get baptized, and someone assists the person by showing them where the baptismal clothes are, and directs them how to get into the tub.
Then the person says basically one word, when asked, no long speach... “(States their name) do you believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God?” “Yes” (or “Yes I do”) “Bless you for that confession. I now baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit for the remission of your sins.”
Then he dunks them completely under the water as they hold their nose. Then when raised up, he introduces them to the congregation as our new brother/sister in Christ. Then when we are dismissed, and they come back out, several people go up to hug them and welcome them to the family of God.
