Pleasing the wife?

I happen to believe that a loving and faithful husband providing for his wife and trying to please her is a respectable thing in the eyes of God. If God is placed in the center of the marriage it can become a ministry in itself as well as the ministry of setting a good example outside of the home and in the workplace. I don't believe that being single can necessarily add to being a humble servant of the Lord and that being married doesn't necessarily subtract from this either. Being a humble servant of the Lord is a matter of allowing Him to guide you and work through you regardless of your marital status.

1 Cor 7:32-33: 32I want you to be free from concern. The unmarried man is concerned about the work of the Lord, how he can please the Lord. 33But the married man is concerned about the affairs of this world, how he can please his wife, 34and his interests are divided.

I also tried it once as an unbeliever... she wouldn't stop cheating on me so I got divorced... good riddance.

However, now the divorced status makes people avoid me. *shrugs*

My ex cheated on me too. I can understand your acceptance of your current single status. Based on my experience from my first marriage I chose to remain single and celibate for 18 years. The thing is, I was just really living only for myself and I eventually found that lacking. Divorce can leave one very bitter about the whole marriage thing.

I find no fault with your wise words my good man. Entering into marriage is definitely not something to be taken lightly because it will come with a cost, sometimes a great cost. I realized this and accepted it and found that it was well worth the cost of admission to become a married man once again. I especially concur with your last sentence. I believe that you would make an excellent husband if you were to chose, with the grace of God to walk down that path.

After reading through this thread, I have to say that I can certainly relate to both "sides" of this discussion...

When my husband left me, I was devastated, miserable, and my greatest fear in life was being alone forever. I had hoped to find someone as soon as possible (after the divorce was finalized), but God has had other plans.

I've been single now for 15 years, and while it took almost all that time for the dream to die down (a little), God has turned my attention to other things (such as looking out for other singles), and that desperate sting of trying to find someone RIGHT NOW has eventually dulled.

I would still like to find someone and I still hope to not be alone forever.

But I just know that I'm a lot less anxious about it than I used to be, and because of that, am able to enjoy some of the good things in life a lot more than I used to.

P.S. Tommy, best wishes on your date. Not all women are train wrecks, I promise.

I'd imagine the work of the Lord is full devotion to God in whatever way that is possible.

Paul's just saying that if you are married, your interests will be divided into pleasing God and pleasing your wife.

Finding a good wife is like finding a precious treasure, a good wife shouldn't subtract too much from pleasing God, and won't need much to be pleased.

An ungrateful and unhappy wife... no matter your actions... is something best to be avoided.

I'm truly happy for you if you have found a great wife!

I don't know her personally but I think it's unfair to accuse her of this. :/ We're all different.

One of my greatest desires is to find someone who gets me emotionally without judging. And sometimes I may not understand why all people don't think like me. Lol But, we'd be in trouble if they did, so I'm thankful they don't. I believe our differences help balance things.

But really, you are ALWAYS talking about being single as though it is something broken that needs to be fixed.
