Once I heard a joke as a child that I didn't understand. Everybody laughed except me. I was thinking long and hard and one night, years later, I woke up and laughed. I thought I had understood it. But I hadn't really. It was first when I was well past 20 I understood it.

So. This is a thread with those jokes that took some time before you understood.....

I can't share mine, though. Modern children are more educated in those areas than I was.

Cartoons sometimes have 'adult' jokes that kids wouldn't get but older people would, even the cartoons that are aimed towards children.

Here's one example. I never would have got this watching it as a kid, but watching it again when I got older, I was quite amused.

This joke is from a Norwegian perspective.... but think of a Norwegian speaking with a funny accent.....

Two Norwegians where in London. They crossed the street without watching.
A man shouted to them: "Did you come here to die?"
The Norwegian that knew the most English, answerd. " No. We came here yesterdie"

One that took me a long time...

A man wanted to visit britain and started talking to a friend about it. The friend told him that he has to beware and keep in mind that they drive on the left side of the road.
Later they met again and the guy said “ i tried to practice driving on the left side...thats dangerous! “

Waiter: "How would you like your steak cooked?"
Customer: "Gee that would be great!"

It took me a long time to get that joke, then one day I thought to put a comma in front of "cooked."

Can we count jokes for which we still haven't gotten the point?

That would be an excellent idea. Trot it out and let's see if somebody else can explain it for you.

What is even less funny is that Marie Antoinette likely never
uttered those words, yet she lost her head because of them.

Yes, apparently the quote was written in a book by a french author when Marie Antionette was only 9 years old.

The story is that she should have, but didn't, say in response to seeing the starving peasants and asked if she could give then bread, she (as she didn't) said give them cakes.

Another thing I learnt when I was at Versailles was that Marie Antoinette had their cows sprayed with perfume.

When I would say, "But I thought . . . ." about some issue at home, Mother would respond, "Well, you thought like Parker's dog." I always felt thoroughly put down, but I didn't understand why. I still don't know. Does anyone here know? Is the answer writable?
