The Hebrew word for elohim has been rightly delineated and defined and translated in my posts, assigning your commentaqry as moot.

It is clear you have not read my posts, not that I expect anyone to do so, except when they make blanket statements and judgments obviating ignorance of what I have shared.

God bless you always, and please, read the content on what you comment upon in the future.

QUESTION: I have heard New Agers claim that even the Bible makes the claim that we (people) are gods. They use the words of Jesus in John 10:34. This verse has always puzzled me. What did Jesus mean when he quoted this scripture?

Thank you for your question. Let me see if I can shed a little light on it.

The contexts in both John 10 and the Old Testament Psalm which Jesus quoted (Psalm 82:6) are very important in understanding our Lord’s answer to the Jews which were about to stone Him. As they pick up stones, Jesus says, “I’ve shown you many good works from the Father; for which of them are you stoning me?” They say, “For a good work we do not stone you, but for blasphemy; and because you, being a man, make Yourself out to be God.” (John 10:32-33).

Then Jesus refers to Psalm 82:6 and says, “Hasn’t it been written in your Law, ‘I said, you are gods’? If He called them gods, to whom the word of God came (and the Scripture cannot be broken), do you say to Him whom the Father sanctified and sent into the world, ‘You are blaspheming’; because I said, ‘I am the Son of God’? If I do not do the works of my Father, do not believe Me…” (John 10:34-37)

Now let us look at Psalm 82 to determine its context and the theme/purpose of the Psalm. The entire psalm is a scathing rebuke aimed at unjust judges in contrast to the just Judge of all the earth. In reality, Asaph, the author of the psalm, is crying out for God to do something about the corrupt judges of his day; they show partiality, they neglect caring for the downtrodden, the weak, the afflicted, etc. Then in verse 6, God Himself speaks, and says:

“I said, ‘You are gods (Elohim),
And all of you are the sons of the Most High.”
Some observations:

1. The words, “Elohim” (God),” and “Yahweh” (Lord), are the two major names of God in the Old Testament. It is Elohim that is used here in verse 6.

2. Its meaning in Psalm 82:6 does not imply that men are gods. It rather refers specifically to the fact that God has appointed judges to act in a dignified, God-like manner in the discharge of their God-appointed responsibilities.

3. Actually, the word “Elohim” is also used in verse 1 of both God and men:

“Elohim (God) takes His stand in His own congregation; He (God) judges in the midst of the Elohim (corrupt judges who are acting like Gods–said in sarcasm).”

Notice in John 10 that Jesus reminds these accusers from the first half of Psalm 82:6 that God is the one who appoints the human judges with their awesome responsibility: “Ye are gods.” He goes on in the second half of the verse to remind them that sons are supposed to resemble their Fathers: “And all of you are the sons of the Most High.” Neither the judges in the psalm nor the Jewish leaders confront Him were reflecting this.

4. In jurisprudence there are two types of authority: de facto and de jure. The Most High God (Elohim Himself) has de facto authority. It is an un-derived authority. He has it because He is God. De jure authority, on the other hand, is derived, or delegated authority. And delegated authority makes one responsible to the one who did the delegating! The second half of verse 6 is a solemn reminder that these judges are called “Sons” of God, because they are to represent faithfully a justice which reflects their “Father,” the Judge of all the earth.

5. Now the words of Jesus in John 10 make a lot more sense. If you or I had come to earth as the Messiah, we would probably have been moving about and taking every opportunity possible with people to verbally emphasize who we really were: Elohim. But Jesus didn’t do that. He chose rather to imply His identity through the miracles, through the Parables, through His actions. It was as if He was careful that a person came to the conclusion that He was Elohim solely of their own accord, and with no pressure or persuasion on His part, though He was eager for them to come to this very conclusion.

6. Notice that in the dialogue in John 10 with these angry Jews, Jesus could have taken the “bait” and said, “I am Elohim!” But He doesn’t. He claims identity with the second half of Psalm 82:6, the one that models a relationship to His Father exactly like what God is desiring from the judges in Psalm 82. Even though Christ is Elohim, He functions during the Incarnation in a de jure capacity to the Father and faithfully carries forth His responsibilities to His Father: accomplishing His mission to redeem the human race (John 3:16).

There are no other gods
There is only one God

people, spirits, can claim they are “gods” all they want but they aren’t.

And it is clear to those to whom the WORD of GOD has come that these have not received THE TRUTH, and to them the Word of GOD has not come

and as such, they do not have eternal life
The word of God only comes to those who are given the faith that comes from hearing God in order to believe God not seen. It would seem you turned that upside down .Its have received.

Men created in the invisible image and likeness of God are as gods. In their spirit essence they have no form just as their Creator. So as to the temporal "Son of man" God who is not a man as us rejected all forms of worship . When addressed according to his flesh as good Master, teacher Lord the "Son of man" would say only God not seen, is good. God is not man as us . As the Son of God ,the Holy Spirit as Christ he has no form .

The two descriptors the temporal as the Son of man seen, and the Son of God must distinguished. The things of men in that way offend him who has not form.

Then the Jews took up stones again to stone him.
Jesus answered them, Many good works have I shewed you from my Father; for which of those works do ye stone me? John 10:32

The reason they desired to stone him was because he did the works of another (our father not seen) the food the disciples knew not of the spiritual unseen .It sets up the discussion

The Jews answered him, saying, For a good work we stone thee not; but for blasphemy; and because that thou, being a man, makest thyself God.Jesus answered them, Is it not written in your law, I said, Ye are gods? John 10

He did not deny being a man it is the result of walking by sight.

There they are accusing the "Son of man" not the "Son of God" (God not seen) the temporal as that seen as blaspheming Him who remains without form the Son of God our high priest continually without beginning or end after the order of Melchizedek.

Heb 7:3 Without father, without mother, without descent, having neither beginning of days, nor end of life; but made like unto the Son of God; abideth a priest continually.

The Son of man a temporal priest who did have a beginning of days and end of the life of the flesh .

If he called them gods, unto whom the word of God came, (just as the word of God does with all believers,) and the scripture cannot be broken;Say ye of him, whom the Father hath sanctified, and sent into the world, Thou blasphemest; because I said, I am the Son of God? If I do not the works of my Father, believe me not.

The test to see if a person can be considered a god .

If the word of God not seen does come to us and it does work in us to both will and do His good pleasure again we are considered gods. We will receive our new bodies the goal of our faith..

Notice he did not use the identifier "Son of man" in respect to that seen .If that was the case we would be making Jesus a god in the likeness of men the temporal . But we continue to walk by faith the unseen after Son of God and not after the Son of man . Blasphemy against men as that seen is forgivable. Blasphemy against the Son of God not seen is not forgivable.

But if I do, though ye believe not me, believe the works: that ye may know, and believe, that the Father is in me, and I in him.Joh 10:32-37

Where gods created in the likeness of men as the seen are false gods .The lying spirits of this world. They go out by prayer and fasting.

The Son of man which speaks of the temporal form was used for a one time demonstration.

2Corinthians 5:16 Wherefore henceforth know we no man after the flesh: yea, though we have known Christ after the flesh, yet now henceforth know we him no more.

Out of sight.... the temporal flesh is ....out of mind.

I have read your posts and have understood that the reference to ye are god’s is telling certain men that they are in authority

i understsnd from John 10 (and as well you mention Moses being sent to tell the people that the I AM has sent him...keeping in mind this (bit only that in exodus 6 GOD goes further to clarify to moses that to Abraham HE was GOD ALMIGHTY and this was sufficient but by HIS name LORD HE did not make HIMSELF known -though now HE is HE is going so far as to clarify LISYEN TO ME) and even Deuteronomy 18 and GOD’s call to Moses that because the people did not want to hear HIS VOICE lest they perish HE would send another likened to MOSES...HIM they should listen to and anyone who does not listen to HIM GOD HIMSELF will require it

All this lines up to JESUS declaration of HIMSELF in John 10 (though they did not believe) and HIS saying “if scripture says to whom the WORD sod GOD has come...ye are gods then scripture can not be broken

And if HE calls HIMSELF the son of GOD, why do they say HE blasphemes.

Others believed
their comments stemmed from their unbelief

NONE of scripture can be broken

if they knew the WORD then HIS reference to being the Good shepherd and the door unto the fold should have brought to mind Ezekiel 34 and Isaiah 53

they should have recognized through the WORD that HE was calling HIMSELF THE MESSIAH

wow so these gods are judges and they are just your common everyday joe blow kinda guys. the idea of them being judges like this guy susggest sure does cause a lot of confusion.
how do men get into a divine council? psalm 87 mentions this council again and even tells us it takes place in the skies, i didnt know men lived in the skies?
why would they forget that they were mortal men and need to be reminded?
why would mortal men be sentenced to die like mortal men?
john 10 makes no sense at all any more, lets sub "gods" with "judges" and see, the pharisees accuse Jesus with making Himself G-D and Jesus replies back, is it not written I said you are judges. so Jesus is just one of these judges? i always thought Jesus was more than that.

And since scripture can’t be broken and since we can’t read piecemeal and should rather keep all that was happening by HIS coming into the world, we should remember that HE had already been declaring to this stiff necked “learned teachers of the law” who HE was in word and in deed. Look at John 8 and John 9 just before John 10. These “teachers” weren’t hearing about HIM (whether through others or directly from HIM) for the first time.

Please dont leave out that the sons of the kingdom will judge those who remained in unbelief and went so far as to say HE had “the wrong spirit” at work

which is is what these “supposed mighty men” who boasted that they had the WORD of GOD actually did

CHRIST SAID

If I cast out demon by berlzebub by whom do the sons cast them out?

they will be your judges

and what will we say but that HE is THE SON of GOD and we did nothing but it was GOD in us who did HIS WORK

It is probably a good idea, practice, to always think in terms of Jesus speaking, teaching the Gospel to the Jews that He would be speaking in Hebrew, some would argue Aramaic, the lingua franca at the time.

In the Temple it is certain He would have spoken Hebrew while dealing with the scribes, Pharisees, Priests etc, otherwise they would have "nailed Him" with a v alid accusation of bringing in a language of teh nations. It is most likely He always spoke Hebrew when teaching no matter when or where.

With this in mind, and the meaning of the Hebrew words much is clarified easily, but if we do not recognixze we are sons of Abraham, we prob ably cannot understand this principle.

Joh 10:34 Jesus answered them, Is it not written in your law, I [THE LORD GOD] said, Ye are gods?
Joh 10:35 If he [GOD] called them gods, unto whom the word of God came, and the scripture cannot be broken;

Php 2:5 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:
Php 2:6 Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God:

Joh 4:48 Then said Jesus unto him, Except ye see signs and wonders, ye will not believe.

Act 5:12 And by the hands of the apostles were many signs and wonders wrought among the people; (and they were all with one accord in Solomon's porch.
Act 5:13 And of the rest durst no man join himself to them: but the people magnified them.
Act 5:14 And believers were the more added to the Lord, multitudes both of men and women.)
Act 5:15 Insomuch that they brought forth the sick into the streets, and laid them on beds and couches, that at the least the shadow of Peter passing by might overshadow some of them.
Act 5:16 There came also a multitude out of the cities round about unto Jerusalem, bringing sick folks, and them which were vexed with unclean spirits: and they were healed every one.
Act 6:8 And Stephen, full of faith and power, did great wonders and miracles among the people.

Act 14:3 Long time therefore abode they speaking boldly in the Lord, which gave testimony unto the word of his grace, and granted signs and wonders to be done by their hands.

Rom 15:19 Through mighty signs and wonders, by the power of the Spirit of God; so that from Jerusalem, and round about unto Illyricum, I have fully preached the gospel of Christ.

Act 2:22 Ye men of Israel, hear these words; Jesus of Nazareth, a man approved of God among you by miracles and wonders and signs, which God did by him in the midst of you, as ye yourselves also know:

Act 8:13 Then Simon himself believed also: and when he was baptized, he continued with Philip, and wondered, beholding the miracles and signs which were done.

Heb 2:4 God also bearing them witness, both with signs and wonders, and with divers miracles, and gifts of the Holy Ghost, according to his own will?

Luk 10:19 Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.
Luk 10:20 Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.

Heb 11:33 Who through faith subdued kingdoms, wrought righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions,
Heb 11:34 Quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness were made strong, waxed valiant in fight, turned to flight the armies of the aliens.
Heb 11:35 Women received their dead raised to life again: and others were tortured, not accepting deliverance; that they might obtain a better resurrection:

Php 4:13 I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth [or to be made strong, enables, and empowers] me.

Joh 15:4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me.
Joh 15:5 I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.
Joh 15:7 If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.

Mat 21:21 Jesus answered and said unto them, Verily I say unto you, If ye have faith, and doubt not, ye shall not only do this which is done to the fig tree, but also if ye shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; it shall be done.
Mat 21:22 And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive.

Joh 14:12 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.
Joh 14:13 And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.
Joh 14:14 If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.

I have focused on the negative that we are not gods so now I will shift to the positive message here of 'what is it saying?' since I have exhausted all I know on that.

I have used this section in John to combat Muslim attacks on Jesus's Divinty against questions like " Jesus never said he was the Son of God so show me Jesus in his own words saying he is the son of God." The NLT has the heading over v 22 Jesus Claims To Be The Son Of God those headings help interpret the section. In v 30 Jesus is placing Himself in the shema (deut 6:4). The jewish audience recognized His phrasing and that's why they tried to kill Him for saying it that way. Jesus was using Father and Son on place of God and Lord. Jesus was saying I and the Father are one God. Then in v36 Jesus makes the statement "I am the Son of God". The article "the" is only used for Jesus being THE Son of God. Those being referenced to in Ps 82 are not called "THE" sons of God. Only Jesus is THE one and only unique only-begotten Son of God. Jesus proves His claim by pointing to His miracles. Those in Ps 82 never performed a single miracle.

Jesus was able to stop the mob from killing Him using ps 82 as a head scratcher to his attackers to throw them off long enough so He could escape. The WOF people read too much into this and therefore miss the whole point of Jesus declaring that He is truley The Son Of God.

John 10:34 is all about Jesus being the Son of God but you are twisting it to be all about you.

The WOF people read too much into this and therefore miss the whole point of Jesus declaring that He is truley The Son Of God.
why would Jesus need to throw them a head scratcher to get away. Jesus could always move in out of crowds like it was nothing.

Luke 4 29-30
And they rose up and drove him out of the town and brought him to the brow of the hill on which their town was built, so that they could throw him down the cliff. But passing through their midst, he went away.

That did happen here too but not until v39.

wow so these gods are judges and they are just your common everyday joe blow kinda guys. the idea of them being judges like this guy susggest sure does cause a lot of confusion.
how do men get into a divine council? psalm 87 mentions this council again and even tells us it takes place in the skies, i didnt know men lived in the skies?
why would they forget that they were mortal men and need to be reminded?
why would mortal men be sentenced to die like mortal men?
john 10 makes no sense at all any more, lets sub "gods" with "judges" and see, the pharisees accuse Jesus with making Himself G-D and Jesus replies back, is it not written I said you are judges. so Jesus is just one of these judges? i always thought Jesus was more than that.
Typical straw man argument from someone who does not even believe that Jesus is God.

When all seemed to go wrong, the psalmist began to consider them like gods (impossible to be touched, changed or overcome). But then he remembered that all the opressed ones are sons of the Most High and, therefore, He would never abandon them.

It's a strawman because they tried to arrest Jesus after quoting ps 82 because Jesus stated He is "the Son of God " not because Jesus was saying they are gods too (which He wasn't saying).

This seems to be all about everyone who believes, not just about yourself........thank you. God bless you always.

Joh 10:34 Jesus answered them, Is it not written in your law, I [THE LORD GOD] said, Ye are gods?
Joh 10:35 If he [GOD] called them gods, unto whom the word of God came, and the scripture cannot be broken;
