Sigh... I think we have to fight for the men here... Gilbert Blythe.... I should have guessed. Well. I shoot for the stars and vote for mr. Darcy.
Well I think this needs to be settled once and for all.... so I'm challenging all those of you interested in the heroes of classic literature to :

I hear there's an emma expansion if necessary.

I forgot to mention Heathcliff. I fell in love with him when I was fourteen and could not decide between him and Mr. Rochester. I should have also mentioned Colonel Brandon. All of these heroes were created by female authors. This is not a coincidence.
Real men aren't literary fantasy.

It's a game a guy (yes a guy) at the gaming group I go to every month owns. It's been a while since I played it but it was thematically well done and a good set collection (primarily a set collection mechanic at least) card game.

And since I'm nerdy / geeky enough to talk about board games like that, you may as well just ship me with board games and be done with it ( I'm already in a pretty serious relationship with terraforming Mars, though sometimes I spend an evening with friday or some of the early american chrononauts).

They are fictional. That is their secret. Like that guy women were swooning over in those vampire movies. Only a fictional guy can attract the ladies like that. Real men are too... real.

The Lynx speaks much truth (sadly since these fictional men who fulfill women's emotional fantasies are just as non-existent as the women that would fulfill men's fantasies). Though on a practical note one of the best things about fictional men that any real life guy can learn to imitate is that they open up their lives to us. We like knowing what's going on and their hopes and fears and concerns and dreams and all that (yep much easier to do in a book as a passive observer than in real life where one persons stuff affects other people).

Anyway for your consideration I present a list of the common virtues of Darcy and the Doctor:

Both are deeply caring and compassionate people.
Both have extravagant lifestyles that they're willing to share with a special companion
Both are British
Both have learned, grown, admitted their mistakes and shortcomings and made positive changes
Both are quick witted and intelligent
Both have come through in a crisis
Both need other people to keep them from functioning like detached robots instead of people.

And since they are such incredibly different characters in spite of all those similarities, someone really needs to do a good darcy vs the doctor meme chart ( just googled it and all I could find was that there's someone out there who is a doctor with a first name of darcy: sometimes google is a huge disappointment).

I still think that da single boyz can learn something from Darcy. Here are some practical Darcy lessons we can apply to our own lives.

1. Be kinda aloof at the start of the relationship. Don't wear your heart on your sleeve the first couple times you take her to Bucco di Beppo. If you are a genuinely kind man and think you're coming across as some sort of reserved jerk, you're doing it right.

2. Be a gentleman, but not an overwhelming gentleman, ie open doors, but let her pull out her own chair.

3. Try to seem brooding. I suggest going to the bookstore and buy a classic novel of your choice (nothing too technical unless you know your lady is in a certain field). Arrive at your date's rendezvous point early and crack the book open (you don't have to read it). When she shows up, make sure to give the book a deep scowl.

4. Try to look manly but approachable like Colin Firth.

5. Dress like a minor aristocrat. I guess today that means a uniform or business casual. I mean you could go full tux, but you'll probably out-dress her and a gentleman never out-dresses his lady.

6. Have money.

7. Say very little.

8. I think chicks dig the story arc of Pride and Prejudice more than they do Darcy himself. He's this aloof dude and Elizabeth/events crack him (it's been a while since I've seen the miniseries so I could be off). There is a sequence to it that proves love is true and genuine. We dudes have a tough time understanding it (I still do), but it's best to kinda mirror that/create a similar story when you find a chick you dig.

As boring, unreadable, and unrealistic as Pride and Prejudice is, there are a few good takeaways. Obviously, a few points above were made in jest.

Take what I say with a grain of salt too. I'm not married. Married dudes would know better than me. Most of them.

Long time no see. I do hope that your headaches are a thing of the past. Seoul, Pipp, and Zero are still among the CC quick. Probably quite a few others that you know as well.
