This is the good works component that I have been talking about. Belief, faith, trust, grace accompanied by good works = eternal life.
And this equation is false and not of God...everything after grace turns it into a false gospel with no power to save a flea, much less a man!

The gospel is the good news that Jesus died for us and because of that we may have eternal life, if we believe in his sacrifice and do the things he taught us to do in the bible.

What do you believe the gospel IS?

Revelation 14:6-7, “And I saw another messenger flying in mid-heaven, holding the

[FONT=Times New Roman, serif]Long before the books were compiled to form “The New Testament,” Rev 22:14 was quoted, as it is here given, by Tertullian (CE 208), and by Cyprian (CE 251) – see the well-known Antenicene Fathers. (See Mat 19:17)[/FONT]

[FONT=Times New Roman, serif]Hengstenberg's Commentary on Revelation[/FONT]

[FONT=Times New Roman, serif]Rev 22:14. Blessed are they that do his commandments, that their power may be to the tree of life, and to enter by the gates into the city. The meaning is, blessed therefore are they; for the benediction rests on the circumstance, that God in Christ is the Alpha and the Omega. Were it otherwise, they would be the most miserable of men (1Co 15:19). To keep or to do God’s commandments, or his will, his law, is a mode of speech peculiarly frequent with St John (ch. Rev 12:17, Rev 14:12; Joh 7:19, Joh 4:34, Joh 6:38, Joh 7:17, Joh 9:31). Among these commands faith in Jesus is the foremost (comp. at ch. Rev 14:12). A similar benediction pronounced on doing is found in Joh 13:17, “If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them.” The his shows that the angel is speaking here in his own person. Bengel’s remark, “His is ornately put for mine; his, of him who is the Alpha and the Omega,” would only be warrantable, if the other supposition were not so natural. In the words, “that their power may be,” &c., the manner in which the blessedness is to be realized is more accurately determined (comp. on ch. Rev 14:13). Bengel: “When Adam broke the command the way to the tree of life was barred; but they who do the commandments shall have power over the tree of life.” No other entrance can be found into the new Jerusalem, but through the gates. Their being so expressly mentioned here, therefore, can only be intended to add vividness to the description. He who travels toward a city in the first instance directs his eye to the gates; and the glory of the gates here referred to, described in ch. Rev 21:21, here again comes especially into view. Allusion is, perhaps, made to Psa 122:1-2. [/FONT]

James 2:14, “My brothers, what use is it for anyone to say he has belief but does not have works? This belief is unable to save him.”
In James 2:14, we read of one who says/claims he has faith but has no works (to validate his claim). That is not genuine faith, but a bare profession of faith. So when James asks, "Can that faith save him?" he is saying nothing against genuine faith, but only against an empty profession of faith/dead faith. *So James does not teach that we are saved "by" works. His concern is to show the reality of the faith professed by the individual (James 2:18) and demonstrate that the faith claimed (James 2:14) by the individual is genuine.

*So James is simply saying faith that is not accompanied by evidential works is dead. If someone says-claims he has faith but lacks resulting evidential works, then he has an empty profession of faith/dead faith and not authentic faith. Simple!

James 2:26, "For just as the body without the spirit is dead, so belief without works is dead also."
In James 2:26, the comparison of the human spirit and faith converges around their modes of operation. The spirit (Greek pneuma) may also be translated "breath." As a breathless body emits no indication of life, so fruitless faith exhibits no indication of life. The source of the life in faith is not works; rather, life in faith is the source of works (Ephesians 2:5-10).

Hebrews 5:9, “And having been perfected, He became the Causer of everlasting salvation to all those obeying Him.”
So in Hebrews 5:9, who obeys Him? The saved or the lost?

I've heard many works salvationists use this verse to try and support salvation by works, including Roman Catholics, Mormons and misguided teachers of the law. *Only believers have obeyed Him by choosing to believe the gospel (Romans 1:16) in order to become saved, and only believers obey Him after they have been saved through faith by practicing righteousness and not sin and loving one another as He commanded us (1 John 3:9-10, 23; 4:21 ). In either sense, only believers obey Him.

Unbelievers have not obeyed Him by refusing to believe the gospel (Romans 10:16) and without faith its impossible to please God (Hebrews 11:6), so unbelievers do not obey Him no matter how much "so called" obedience that they attempt to conjure up through the flesh in a vain effort to receive salvation by works (Matthew 7:22-23). In either sense, unbelievers do not obey Him.

People believe in context of John 3:16. Here it is in 4 different translations. I find the AMPC version meaningful since it gives better meaning to the word translated believe.

John 3:16 KJV
16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

John 3:16 NIV
16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

John 3:16 ESV
16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

John 3 AMPC (Amplified Classic)
16 For God so greatly loved and dearly prized the world that He [even] gave up His knee and) only begotten (unique) Son, so that whoever believes in (trusts in, clings to, relies on) Him shall not perish (come to destruction, be lost) but have eternal (everlasting) life.in
Amen! In James 2:19, we see that the demons believe "mental assent" that "there is one God" but they do not believe/trust in/cling to/rely on Him. They do not believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and are not saved (Acts 16:31). Their trust and reliance is in Satan, as demonstrated by their rebellion in heaven and continuous evil works.

There are many "nominal" Christians who believe "mental assent" in the existence and historical facts about Christ, yet they do not trust in, cling to, rely on Him as the ALL-sufficient means of their salvation but instead, they trust in works for salvation.

Example below of someone (a Roman Catholic) who re-defines faith and teaches salvation by works:

We ARE saved by faith - as long as you properly define "Faith". Faith is NOT simply "believing". Faith INCLUDES: Being baptized, eating His body and drinking His blood/partaking the Lord's Supper during Mass, works of mercy and charity, obeying his commandments, doing the will of the Father etc..

Of course, that is absolutely false. Faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen (Hebrews 11:1). Multiple acts of obedience which follow and are produced "out of" faith is WORKS, yet works-salvationists try to "shoe horn" works "into" salvation through faith and end up with salvation through faith (their version of faith) + works.

OK. I was reading Romans yesterday and I came across these. Not sure if y'all are still arguing about the by works not by works and also not sure if it has been posted but i'll drop it in case.

Romans 1 vs 12. Kjv

For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith ; as it were written, the just shall live by faith.

Romans 3 vs 27-28

27. Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what laway? Of works? Nay: but by the law of faith

28. Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law. (Work)

Romans 4 vs 1-5

1. What shall we say then that Abraham our Father, as pertaining to the flesh, hath found?

2. For if Abraham were justified by works, he hath whereof to glory; but not before God.

3. For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness.

4. Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt.

5. But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith his counted for righteousness.

Romans 4:13, 14, 16.

13. For the promise, that he should be the heir of the world, was not to Abraham, or his seed, through the law, but through the righteousness of faith.

14. For if they which are of the law be heirs, faith is made void, and the promise made of none effect.

16. Therefore it is of faith, that it might be by grace; to the end the promise might be sure to all the seed; not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham; who is the father of us all.

Romans 5: 1-2
1. Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus christ:
2. By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in the hope of the glory of God.

some people think that if you say you are a Christian it makes you a Christian......jesus(the word of god) says And when he had found him, he brought him unto Antioch. And it came to pass, that a whole year they assembled themselves with the church, and taught much people. And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch.
Acts 11:26 KJV
https://bible.com/bible/1/act.11.26.KJV
So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple.
Luke 14:33 KJV
https://bible.com/bible/1/luk.14.33.KJV
This is a problem the early church faced. There were heresies and legitimate differences of opinion. They first created the Roman Creed in the 200s and updated it to the Apostles Creed by 390AD to define the core doctrine of who is and isn't a Christian. It states the core beliefs a Christian must believe No deviation allowed. This was used to fight heresies and allow acceptable differences of opinion. Doctrinal statements are used to define beliefs not save anyone. I get tired of those who ignore this difference and say it has nothing to do with salvation. All denominations of Christians have doctrinal and church government information published. Pick a gospel teaching denomination and look up these documents online. The Book of Church Order is the usual name of the government and it points to the doctrinal statement of the denomination.

John 3:16 AMPC defines this clearly. Here is a comparison of 4 translations. AMPC makes a great study Bible even though at times it is cumbersome reading

John 3 AMPC Amplified Classic
16 For God so greatly loved and dearly prized the world that He [even] gave up His knee and) only begotten (unique) Son, so that whoever believes in (trusts in, clings to, relies on) Him shall not perish (come to destruction, be lost) but have eternal (everlasting) life.

My copied AMPC had an error and the stupidly short 5 minute rule didn't allow me to fix it after I fixed the white space issue this site has and came out to verify my fix and saw the error.

You should avoid the KJV. It was a good translation in 1611. The problem is all languages are dynamic and change over time. 400 years has words dissappear and change meaning.

KJV
Thou shalt not kill.

NIV
You shall not murder.

In 1611 kill meant murder. People get killed in accidents every day.

Well, I'll admit there certainly could be born again believers in the Catholic Church, but Catholic doctrine is not Christian.

Yet, I would be hard pressed to understand how a born again believer could stay in the Catholic Church.

I have met several, and they are the minority, but they are getting a few saved.

I will tell you the major difference. THEY WORSHIP THE LORD, not Mary.

Here is a testimony about a BORN AGAIN Catholic.

First of all, he and I used to Study together, in fact, I bought him his first Study Bible. It was a NASB, and he grew leaps and bounds. Bob was his name, and he refused to leave the Catholic Church, because GOD NEEDED HIM THERE. So let me tell you how he shows GOD's LOVE for Others.

Their were a lot of transient homeless hitchhikers that wandered through our town, on the way to some were else. He would ask one or two of them several nights a week to come home with him. He owned a Body Shop, and he would tell them for a few hours of work in his body shop, they would get a home cooked supper and breakfast, a shower, and a bed in the garage of his house. Only one stipulation, just before bed time, they had to participate in a Bible Study {using the Bible I bought him}, and he would close with prayer. In the morning after breakfast, he would just before they left on their journey, he would unannounced, also pay them for their few hours work.

I have also met TWO Born Again Priests, that are committed to Teaching the Bible. And they would teach and exposit the WORD, faithfully in every MASS they were in. I also had long talks with both of them, and OBVIOUSLY they were born again. I asks why they stayed in the Catholic Church, and they both said "That is where GOD wants them to be." So GOD is SAVING a few in the Catholic Church, and they are among The Seven Lampstands that CHRIST walks around, no matter what some of you think.

In 1611 kill meant murder. People get killed in accidents every day.
Thanks no thanks. I'll stick to my kjv and change it when God asks me to

It stuns me, some standing before Jesus saying "look what I did for you" rather than
"look what you did for me"

Like Mother Teresa, with all that she did, yet she believed a different gospel. Maybe she got saved on her death bed (only God knows), but if she died without Jesus she would be in Hades now, and her works would be rags. Saying this, I do believe God may have brought some relief to some people, according to His will though.

As the scriptures say, many on judgment day will be boasting of the works they did, before being sent to the lake of fire because Jesus will say He never knew them... they were never His, He was never their Lord. (Wow, auto correct said lake of firs :))

It stuns me, some standing before Jesus saying "look what I did for you" rather than "look what you did for me".
Hi Katy-follower, very good points you make, this needs repeating to the plentiful works group.

Righteousness Through Faith: Romans3:27
Where, then, is boasting? It is excluded. Because of what law? The law that requires works? No, because of the law that requires faith.

You should avoid the KJV. It was a good translation in 1611. The problem is all languages are dynamic and change over time. 400 years has words dissappear and change meaning.

KJV
Thou shalt not kill.

NIV
You shall not murder.

HERE IS JESUS USING THE CORRECT WORD:

Matthew 19:18 (KJV)
[SUP]18 [/SUP] He saith unto him, Which? Jesus said, Thou shalt do no murder, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness,

You do know that GOD used the word that can be translated both Murder and Kill, don't you?

Romans 13:4 (KJV)
[SUP]4 [/SUP] For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil.

The Word of GOD is correctly rendered MURDER. Police, Miltary, and justifiable homicide such as self defense DO NOT MURDER.

Luke 22:36 (KJV)
[SUP]36 [/SUP] Then said he unto them, But now, he that hath a purse, let him take it, and likewise his scrip: and he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one.

THERE Jesus Himself authorized SELF DEFENSE WEAPONS, mine is a pistol.

You also did KNOW that the KJV is not a Translation, but rather an UPDATE of the language, and to correct some KNOWN ERRORS from Earlier English Translations. Here is an excerpt from the Original 1611 KJV Preface:

Truly (good Christian Reader) wee never thought from the beginning, that we should neede to make a new Translation, nor yet to make of a bad one a good one, . . .
. . .

but to make a good one better, or out of many good ones, one principall good one, not justly to be excepted against; that hath bene our indeavour, that our marke. . . .

That makes it a PARAPHRASE and not an actual Translation from the original languages.

They used all of the older English Translations, and compared it to the LATIN Bible. Here is the Link to the 1611 Original KJV Preface: Preface to the King James Version 1611, Part 10 of 10

The quote "wee never thought from the beginning, that we should neede to make a new Translation," comes near the top of page 10.
