Act 15:19 Wherefore my sentence is, that we trouble not them, which from among the Gentiles are turned to God:
Act 15:20 But that we write unto them, that they abstain from pollutions of idols, and from fornication, and from things strangled, and from blood.

Why only this?

Act 15:21 For Moses of old time hath in every city them that preach him, being read in the synagogues every sabbath day.
Act 15:22 Then pleased it the apostles and elders, with the whole church, to send chosen men of their own company to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas; namely, Judas surnamed Barsabas, and Silas, chief men among the brethren:

Why does He say that they should do these things because Moses has been preached for a long time and is read in the synagogue every Sabbath?

If we want to know Paul's Doctrine and teachings then Romans is the most systematic presentation of the Gospel Paul preached.

He teaches in Romans to keep the law of God and why and how in Christ. He also teaches that the Gospel was never just for Jews and He proves this by Using Abraham. And he teaches all who are of faith are grafted into the nation of Israel.

The word translated "are turning" is this "ἐπιστρέφουσιν" and it is in the present active indicative.
The present tense in Greek tell one that an action is taking place currently, but not when the action began.
The action may have begun just a second before or years or centuries before.

From https://www.ezraproject.com/greek-tenses-explained/

"Summary: The Greek present tense usually describes action that is in the process of happening, or action that continues over a period of time. In the indicative mood, however, it can refer to other types of action."

Which circles right back around to my point that "the Jerusalem council's decision proves that Christian Jews were not under the law of Moses." In other words, if the Jerusalem council (the head of the church) ruled that gentiles were under no obligation to the law of Moses (which they did), then Jews weren't either per your reasoning.
How do you get 'under no obligation to the law of Moses' out of their decision? Don't you recognize anything in what they said as being from the law of Moses?

But anyway, the point is, you can not use the famous (but incorrect) argument that the gentiles were not under the law to somehow make the case that the church does not have to obey the law now.

Are you married, Ralph?

Wedding rings have a pagan origin. As do most wedding traditions such as the veil, throwing rice, carrying the bride over the threshold, etc.

Does your wife use makeup? Jewelry?

Better tell her to knock it off - eye shadow, lipstick, ear rings, etc. - all pagan.

Do you use the names of the months? Days of the week?

Most are named after pagan gods.

Do you have wind chimes?

Better ditch them - pagan.

Grave markers for the dead? Flowers on the grave?

Pull 'em out - pagan origins as well.

Do you play cards?

Yep - pagan origins.

Most coinage and paper money have pagan symbols on them.

Still use money?

Even church steeples have pagan origins.

Go to a church with a steeple?

Quite the conundrum, Ralphie.
Apparently, you haven't been following my posts about this subject. If you had you'd know my stance on this.

How do you get 'under no obligation to the law of Moses' out of their decision?
Because that was what the entire controversy was about.....
Whether New covenant believers were under the Law or not!

And the conclusion was - NOT!

It seems none of the flks who oppose doing our Father's will in this age actually pay any attention to any of the posts on the teachings of Jesus christ concerning obedienct of the law under grace..

They would rather misquote Paul, that is post lots of his text out of context....and so it goes. (Was that the Daily version of What's My Line..you are kind of young for that one R.?)

Christian Pharisees' Demand

But some of those who had believed from the party of the Pharisees stood up, saying, “It is necessary to circumcise [Gentiles] and to command [them] to observe the law of Moses!” Acts 15:5

Peter's Rebuttal

So now why are you putting God to the test [by] placing on the neck of the disciples a yoke that neither our fathers nor we have been able to bear? Acts 15:10

James' Judgment

Therefore I judge to not further trouble the ones from the nations turning towards God; but we should write a letter to them to [1] abstain from the pollution of idols and from [2] sexual immorality and from [3] what has been strangled and [4] from blood. Acts 15:19-20

The four laws of Noah that James mentioned have nothing to do with the law of Moses.

Pay attention to what he said: HeRose said 'no obligation to the law of Moses'.

After years of talking doctrine to people, one thing I've noticed about people in the church. Everything has to be 'either this or that' and nothing in between. Get over that thinking and the truth starts to open up.

After years of talking non sense maybe....

Your head is so far up something that it is impossible for you to see - much less the truth...

Nothing? How can you say something so.....so.....uneducated. I'm trying to be nice, but you simply don't know the law of Moses. Not that I know it completely myself, but the church knows virtually NOTHING about the law. Your statement above shows this.

Don't feel bad. You're not alone, and the blame lies at the feet of the leadership of the church beginning with the spiritual morons who decided they had more authority than Jesus (check it out) and could create a new competing, pagan system of worship. And that to simply do the old way for any reason whatsoever was anathema. Complete morons.

Pay attention. He said NO obligation to the law of Moses. The decision of the elders was that they are obligated to these four particular laws of Moses. Besides, of course, the many other laws that reasonable people know they obviously have an obligation to (do not murder, do not steal, do not commit adultery....).

Either we are under the law of Moses or we are not. This kind of teaching just sows confusion.

  • "We're not under the law, but we have to follow it."
  • "We're dead to the law, but we have to follow it"
  • "The law's been abolished, but we have to follow it"

There's very few here, maybe no one, who quote more from the law than I do. I love the law and know it very well. Probably better than you do.

I think you have it completely inverted. The church is in the state it's in because it would rather (pretend to) follow the law of Moses than obey the voice of the living GOD (law).

Those were a rabbinical invention called the laws of Noah.

Amen, Their instruction was the bare minimum that would allow them to worship in the synagogues without being pushed away by the Jews. It is in the Synagogue that they would learn the law and the prophets better.

Still holds merit to think on their meaning and to apply their moral value to one's life though.

The New covenant morality is a much higher ethic...
There is no minimum standard of behaviour in the New covenant, compare to the Sinaitic covenant and its statutes where the minimum requirements are spelled out in minute detail...
One cannot legislate love and it is love that is the ENTIRE basis of New covenant morality!
The only question that remains is this: to what of level of sacrificial love should we aspire?
All we have to do, for an answer, is look to the example that Jesus Christ Himself set for us......
