Matthew 8:18-22

(18) When Jesus saw the crowd around him, he gave orders to cross to the other side of the lake. (19) Then a teacher of the law came to him and said, "Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go." (20) Jesus replied, "Foxes have dens and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head." (21) Another disciple said to him, "Lord, first let me go and bury my father." (22) But Jesus told him, "Follow me, and let the dead bury the dead."

Jesus voluntarily became homeless when He started His ministry.

I'm curious as to how many homeless there are on CC, if there are any who would admit it. I am homeless myself. This is partly my own choice, partly because of circumstances.

Blessings to all!

I relocated for work, but it didn't work out, and I became stranded and out on the street. I remain here, though, because there's a bigtime need for the Gospel at street level, and I believe God is using me, and the Holy Spirit guiding me while I'm here. I know I'm called to a ministry in music, so either this is it, or I'm under training for something else.

Actually, I've had one foot in this ministry and one foot in the world for a long, long time. But there's nothing like homelessness and hunger, and loneliness for a kick in the pants to wise up! and crawl out from under my filthy rock and get to work for God.

So I play and pray for folks on the street in a tourist city, and in churches sometimes when I'm invited, using the talents God gave me, trusting God daily for my shelter and bread. I have to, because I can't rely on the kindness of passing Samaritans.:)

I find no shame in homelessness now, but at first I did. That was worldly thinking, and I played worldly music, sang worldly songs, busking for change. I was bitter and uncaring, just another drunk street musician looking for booze money, and if I had anything left over it went for food.

But Jesus can put His purpose into any situation I find myself in, if I just listen-up. So my prayer today is, thank you, Lord, lead on, and I'll keep a-followin' as best I can.

My 2 questions:

1. Are there any homeless here on CC?

2. Is what Jesus said in verse 22, "Follow me, and let the dead bury the dead.", a suggestion that homelessness may be part of a person's calling to ministry, or could it be a command to be homeless? I'm purposely not quoting other scripture here, because really I'm asking for help in sorting it out.

1. I don't know of he is still around but I did hear another man talk about not having a home here.

2. I believe the main point of that verse is to not make excuses to wait to follow Jesus....

also there is a point to not stressing too much about finance.... God will provide

but it is not actually evil to have possessions (including a home)

there is a principal being demonstrated by Jesus here

and it isn't "having things is bad"
(though the LOVE of worldly things is indeed bad)

matthew 19

16 And, behold, one came and said unto him, Good Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life?

17 And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments.

18 He saith unto him, Which? Jesus said, Thou shalt do no murder, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness,

19 Honour thy father and thy mother: and, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

20 The young man saith unto him, All these things have I kept from my youth up: what lack I yet?

21 Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me.

_________

Jesus was telling this man how to be perfect

this man believed his works regarding the commandments were perfect (including loving God above all and his neighbor as himself)

Jesus is saying ohhhhh is that so?

then give up all your things and follow me
(to expose where this mans heart really was.... it is not evil to have possessions)

but this man was seeking to establish his own righteousness...which will never be perfect and Jesus hit him where it hurt to prove it

22 But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful: for he had great possessions.

____________

again same principal

Luke 10
25 And, behold, a certain lawyer stood up, and tempted him, saying, Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?

26 He said unto him, What is written in the law? how readest thou?
(again a man looking to be justified by works)
27 And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself.
(this man believes he actually does this fully)
28 And he said unto him, Thou hast answered right: this do, and thou shalt live.
(Jesus says knowing this man is self righteous yaaa thats all you need then if you are correct)
29 But he, willing to justify himself, said unto Jesus, And who is my neighbour?
(as if he truely does this knowing Jesus does not believe him asks ohhh who is my neighbor maybe i am wrong mockingly)

30 And Jesus answering said, A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, which stripped him of his raiment, and wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead.

31 And by chance there came down a certain priest that way: and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side.

32 And likewise a Levite, when he was at the place, came and looked on him, and passed by on the other side.

33 But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was: and when he saw him, he had compassion on him,

34 And went to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine, and set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him.

35 And on the morrow when he departed, he took out two pence, and gave them to the host, and said unto him, Take care of him; and whatsoever thou spendest more, when I come again, I will repay thee.

36 Which now of these three, thinkest thou, was neighbour unto him that fell among the thieves?

37 And he said, He that shewed mercy on him. Then said Jesus unto him, Go, and do thou likewise.

____________

that amount of money
as well as offering for excess was .... a lot of money at that time....

this exposes that man who believed he was doing these things is actually wrong......

he does not love his enemy as himself as he ought to in order to be perfect

let alone his literal neighbor....

Job was blessed with many things... but he proved his heart was on God when he was tested

sorry for the long winded post my friend

i had typed some of that put earlier and thought maybe it would be helpful

but you also said

there's a bigtime need for the Gospel at street level, and I believe God is using me, and the Holy Spirit guiding me while I'm here. I know I'm called to a ministry in music, so either this is it, or I'm under training for something else.

i do not doubt this

i wouldn't be surpised one bit of you are a shining example to many in need

and God is currently working in you to point to the truth using your gifts

;)

but please don't feel like you have to remain without in order to meet His will

though maybe these trials are specifically being used to work much patience and understanding in you

it is not wrong for you to find a place to rest your head

it is only wrong if this is your sole purpose for joy

and what you depend on
and where your heart is

and you put more value in "things" than Jesus

I haven't got the time to fully give my thoughts regarding your post.

Having read your post above I find a joy in my heart but also a bit of caution.

In my church we have many homeless people coming into our church, and I'm loving it.
Homeless people feeling free and safe to come in. They don't know Jesus, yet we are being Jesus. Therefore accepted warts and and all.

Can I minister, I say yes but fully identify with a homeless person?
No I cannot because I have not been there.

Yet we know Jesus was homeless.
And we know Jesus ministered the Gospel.

Yet we know Jesus knew the Father and was able to minister.

So that is where my caution comes in.
To be able to minister we must know Jesus, to reach out to the people he has asked us to do.

I hope I make some sense.

I wouldn't say I'm poor. My riches go to my Heavenly account. Work and housing could be rather easily obtained, but I'm choosing to remain homeless to help with a rather dirty job, at least for now.

I didn't really want to give out my location, but I can't come up with a reason not to: Nashville TN. There really is a need for street evangelism and street prayer here. Lots of people pass through and are only here for a short time (vagabonds AND tourists), and friendships are also often short-lived, and few go to any church long enough to count for anything, so I'm grateful for any time they'll stop and pray and chat for a spell. I did 'street preaching' back in Michigan from 2005 to 2014 or so, and I was homeless for part of that, about 3 years all-together, and it was definitely more effective when I lived on the street. It's really hard to gain a streetperson's trust sometimes, and it's also hard to relate and really get to know them when I have a warm bed to go to and they don't. Many of these folks are hard to love, too, since they would just as likely kill you as look at you, so it's also a test for me there.

Well, The Lord Bless your work. You should have a prayer covering and I hope you are eating regularly. Do you stop in and attend any church services on Sundays?

Go with what you feel God has asked you to do.
If it's being homeless with the homeless then be homeless.

The only thing I would say is find a place to get input, a place of rest and restoration.

I'm not thinking it's evil to have things, just right now it's beneficial not to.

I've thought a lot about this parable. In a sense I gave up everything I had, in that while it was mostly stolen and lost, I didn't lament over it (well, maybe a little bit over losing my guitars), but I turned to Christ, assured that He's always with me, and I just tried to count it joy somehow, and when I started praying with my fellow homeless instead of drinking with them that joy just increased, ya know? I think of it as a Heavenly deposit sometimes.

Yep, it's my turn to be the Samaritan, now that I know what these folks go through every day. (And my family wanted me to be a lawyer:rolleyes:)

Thank you for you testimony and your willingness and obedience to follow Christ. I am blessed with the security of owning my own house. I stock up on food. I know my finances are secure and if not, I will somehow be provided for by the State. I see Christ working in and through you, and I find it amazingly beautiful.
I used to be a musician. Freelancing and never turning down a job. I thought I served the Lord through playing, but it turned out I served Him better as a teacher. So when the disability caught up with me, I ended up as a teacher and don't really miss playing under great but grumpy conductors. I am not sure people see Christ in me. I am not even sure if I serve Him, although I thought I did.

Pardon me for not answering any of your questions. I just happy I stumbled upon this thread. I will pray for you, my friend. May God bless you and may you be a blessing for others. You have surely blessed me tonight! Thank you!

I haven't got the time to fully give my thoughts regarding your post.

Having read your post above I find a joy in my heart but also a bit of caution.

Thank you for the response. Not sure I understand the caution, though I can tell you understand why I'm choosing to remain homeless. I think it's only temporary so that I can learn some things God wants me to learn, so I can, like you said, 'identify'. I can DEFINATELY do that now!

This is for sure helping me to know Jesus better, by doing a little bit of reaching out to folks who need Him most like you said (and I say a little bit because I can only scratch the surface; it's a huuuuuge problem in the USA), but I have to admit it seems to be testing me thoroughly right now. I frequently have thoughts of just going back to a "regular" job and lifestyle and forget all this, but the Holy Spirit keeps tapping my shoulder and telling me "I'll let you know when you're done with this."

I was pretty much where you are from September till January with a young child.
It was my final face planting wake up call...since being on my knees wasn't enough to get my full attention.
And He absolutely put me to doing His good work! Being the oldest woman/mother at the emergency shelter, I was able to help young single mothers who never knew Jesus and those who had a Christian background, by sharing my situation and my testimony of Christ's steady hand throughout my life. My mistakes. My consequences. God's lesson s and the blessings that come when we finally take the time to obey His will for our lives.
Continue with your faith and trust in our God with His crazy reckless unfathomable love He has for us! He's not steering ya wrong..He's steering you where He wants ya...and He only wants the best for us. This ministry is going to take you to a much bigger blessing than you can imagine. Don't waiver...don't step backwards!
How many times did He bless Job?
Amen bro! He loves you and will provide even more than He does for the sparrows!

Thank you for your kind words and prayers, Toinena.

I switched from sax to oboe for 6 months in high school, but with hands over her ears our director made me switch back:eek:. I just couldn't get the hang of 2-reed embouchure.

If I may, even though you may not see it, I can tell you serve God, by even just what you wrote above, and it truly blesses me. It takes one to know one:).

I have a place to stay but I am homeless. If my mother were to die, I would then be homeless AND with no place to stay unless God provided a place for me to stay and sleep. I've lost all fear over my situation though and that's a great blessing!

It was after I met God that I found myself in poverty. Before I met Him i had a home and a business that grossed about 200,000 per year. I also had a husband before I met Him. It took quite a few years but I actually laugh about it now. If I told this all to nonchristians, they would run from from God insteAd of to Him...they couldn't possibly understand how Him growing my faith has been worth way more than all i lost.

I lost it all before too and crashed and burned. Having survived, by the grace of God, I feel that my faith in God is much stronger than before. I'm not afraid anymore of what lies ahead because I know my final destination. I enjoyed your testimony, thank you for sharing this part of your life.

Not really. While the Lord voluntarily gave up the ownership of a home (although He may have enjoyed the hospitality of many disciples) He did not forbid home ownership (which is a far greater blessing than being homeless). Indeed, if a church discovered that one of their congregation was homeless, it would make every effort (I would expect) to end that painful situation.

Do you stay at the Nashville Mission or do you sleep on the streets? My husband once picked up a young man and brought him home, he was a very gentle, humble, Christian who loved God with all his heart, it was his mission in life to just travel the roads, and witness to who ever picked him up. That was several years ago, it would be scary to do today, but then so would what you are doing. But where God leads he provides, right? His favorite song was I Can Only Imagine, by Mercy Me.

This is from a church in Nashville, Tn -maybe it will resonate with you?

My 2 questions:

1. Are there any homeless here on CC?

2. Is what Jesus said in verse 22, "Follow me, and let the dead bury the dead.", a suggestion that homelessness may be part of a person's calling to ministry, or could it be a command to be homeless? I'm purposely not quoting other scripture here, because really I'm asking for help in sorting it out.
