Audrey,

I do not know where you live. But having lived in the south and in Wisconsin, I see a significant difference in the bars. Up north they tend to be mere social gather places. In the south they are heavily frowned on because of fighting, prostitution, and drunkenness.

Excess =
  1. The state of exceeding what is normal or sufficient: rains that filled the reservoirs to excess.
  2. An amount or quantity beyond what is normal or sufficient; a surplus.
  3. The amount or degree by which one quantity exceeds another: Profit is the excess of sales over costs.
  4. Intemperance; overindulgence: drank to excess.
  5. A behavior or an action that exceeds proper or lawful bounds: tried to avoid engaging in emotional excesses such as hysteria and fits of tempe
This is quit true and on this note, i know here in Ireland if you have more than half a glass of wine it is illigil to drive, so speeking on terms of excess, in general terms i beleve the law has stated the line of excess witch is more than half a glass of wine. Why because its proven if driving with that much it impeers 1 driving. So maybe that "1 glass of wine with dinner" isnt all as good as it seems be
weather driving afterwards or not.

I am not good at quoting scripture, nor do I think I can quote anything more than what has already been quoted on this in here......but I can add what I feel about drinking. My husband's side of the family is very alcoholic, his dad drank like a fish. He has four brothers and all of them are alcoholic. (one of them is a "recovering alcoholic") I have seen what it does to their individual families, and to themselves.....I don't suggest drinking to any excess, ever. Nonwithstanding scripture, (and please understand I am not discrediting what the Bible says about it, nor saying it has no bearing on making a desision about it) it is a very bad idea to risk health, mind, attitudes, LIFE,... for drink. I pray daily, indeed hourly, that my own girls never fall into this lifestyle. It does have heredity traits to it too, and we (Papabean and I) have talked this all through with them, and they have seen too, what alcololism can do.....so we pray they make their decisions wisely. My husband and I do not drink, never have, and never will. I will not say it is a horrible thing to have A drink......but be sensible, be safe......and saying that, A drink CAN be too much as well. One drink to a true alcoholic is dangerous territory. Knowing how it runs in his family, Papabean just won't risk it and I thank God each and every day that he doesn't!!!

Mathew 11:18-19 For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, He has a demon.' The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say,'Look, a glutton and a winebibber, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!' But wisdom is justified by her children." Did Jesus drink? Yes! The Lord says it's not what goes in that defiles a man, it's what comes out of his mouth! If you drink to get drunk, there's something wrong! The first commandment is to love God with all your heart, to put Him first, in all things! When drinking, drugs, chocolate chip cookies, money, sex, or anything comes first, it is wrong! I do not see anything wrong with drinking as long as you use wisdom while doing it! We are saved by Grace, undesevred favor, not by what we do, but by what and who we believe! God is very patient and kind, willing to teach those wanting to be taught how to depend on Him instead of these worldly things! I would much ratter be drunk in the Spirit than drunk with wine! It more real and changes me for the good! And it's free!

Alcohol has no nutritional value and is in fact an intoxicant (meaning... a toxin within)... a poison. There are many warnings against it in the Bible, esp. strong drink. There appears to be a legitimate medicinal use for some.
" And Lo, Jesus at the wedding feast of Cana decided he had tarried long enough with men and turned the water into poison" (Book of Palpitations 1:3)

just messing with ya!

I have been known to have a glass of wine at dinner on occasion, even champagne for a special occasion....but like everyone has already said, getting drunk is wrong. I would also encourage those who are wondering whether to drink or not to perhaps use it as an opportuinity to NOT drink and let that be a witness to others....by setting ourselves apart from others in this way, we're giving them the opportunity to ask us why....its a good chance to share ur faith, and demonstrate in a real way what Christianity is. You can still have fun, still enter into all the conversation and laughter your friends are having, and do it all without alcohol :D Thats a GREAT testimony!

ya because at that time, if you want to take wine as strong drink (witch its not)but when jesus told his deciples to prepare the banquet there was not enough time to get formented wine, as in those days it was not as widely available as today and you needed to give notice to get formented,
also at the wedding and i think those that have drank wine would know, you dont tast alcohol in wine, the alcohol does'nt make the wine good its the sweetness of the grapes and the way they are pressed that gives the flavour, n also how long its been there for, and the king was like, wow this is the best wine,
best wine does'nt indicate alcohol content, it indicates flavour.

After reading these sort of stories on a regular basis I don't see how anyone with a brain can endorse the use of alcohol... http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/9438884/Man-charged-with-triple-murder-in-Adenhart-crash

Are you calling my hubby's whole family....brainless???? hahaha Sorry!! couldn't resist!! Seriously though, these people are good people with a horrible habit or disease, or problem. But whatever you call it, it is not all of who they are. Alcoholics, yes......idiots, no. As the bible says, hate the sin, love the sinner......and I've loved this family for over 23 years now......love em all..hate the drinking. I know sometimes when I tell of some of the things that my husband's family has done becasue of drink, others (from MY side of the family) have looked at me with an automatic glazed look of "well, he is worthless" in their eyes..this HURTS!!!! I KNOW drink to excess is not a good thing!! I've SEEN it...but like I say, it is not ALL of who these people are, nor are they horrible..they just have a horrible problem, with something that is HARD to change ways on......I pray for them all, all the time....
