As I understand it, though many seem to believe that the “Protest” began with Luther, it did not. Christians had been “protesting” against Rome/the Papacy/the Catholic Church centuries before Luther, and many thousands of these Christians paid with their lives for doing so.

True. However, since Protestants generally came out of the Catholic church, one could say that John Wycliffe and the Lollards were the first Protestants.

Wasn't the early church Protestant? I don't mean in terms of protesting, but of following the Bible?

And all the Orthodox and RCCs gasp in horror!

In the sense that the added traditions and doctrines of the Catholic Church were not part of the Church, as we can clearly see in Scripture? Yes.

Traditions and ordinances such as indulgences, Purgatory, the Sacraments, prayer to saints and Mary etc. are completely foreign to Scripture and actually go against Scripture.

To the thread title and this opening post, there is no specific year, because it was not founded as a movement per se. Even Luther's inital protest was not intended to start a movement.

Most Protestants (in the usual sense of the term) would trace the start of the Protestant Reformation to 1517, the year in which Luther nailed his 95 theses to the door of Wittenburg Cathedral. However, as others have noted, this wasn't the earliest action taken in protest of the Catholic Church.

Why are so many bringing up the Catholic Church? The Catholic Church has nothing to do with Protestantism.

New member, making historically indefensible statements. Gee, I've never seen this happen before.

You have an agenda, clearly. The least you can do is be straightforward about it.

Really? All the Protestant Reformers were former Catholics who got fed up the unbiblical nonsense of the RCC and proclaimed the Five Solas of the Reformation. And the Catholic Church opposed them bitterly, and specifically convened the Council of Trent in order to condemn the *heretical* teachings of the Protestants.

The Catholic Church should have paid close attention to John Wycliffe and reformed itself. Since it had no intention of doing so, it opposed Wycliffe and had him killed.

As far we we know they were never within the RCC. Correct me if I am wrong.
History is full of woes and sorrow , yet The Light still Shine . It is very interesting how we acquired much history upon the RCC and her decree's . How she tried to destroy so much truth of God's people , by taking there lives with the sword and fire . Yet there are trustful historians , even those of particular movements that had The Light and share it with others so that they can be freed , in Christ and destroy the works of the devil.

Henry Arnaud , one of the most intelligent of the Waldesian pastors " Neither has there church ever reformed , " say's Arnaud whence arises it's title of evangelic."

The Waldenses are in fact those refugees from Italy , who , after St Paul had preach the Gospel abandon there beautiful country , and fled , like the woman mention in the apocalypse , to these wild mountains .

Book Title : The Waldenses , Sketches of the Evangelical Christians of the valleys of Piedmont pp. 28 , 29

1531801876111.jpeg 1531801876111.jpeg

So you are correct that they never were Catholics , there were many other sects as thee waldenses that continue to preach the word of God . But the reality is many of these books are out of print . That is why not many believers are getting there history .

Shalom

I don't know. What I know is that the covenant of the grace was founded before creation of the world, but manifested to us in these last days for love of us:

  • "Of which salvation the prophets have enquired and searched diligently, who prophesied of the grace that should come unto you: searching what, or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify, when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow. Unto whom it was revealed, that not unto themselves, but unto us they did minister the things, which are now reported unto you by them that have preached the gospel unto you with the Holy Ghost sent down from heaven; which things the angels desire to look into." (1Peter 1.10-12).
  • "But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot: who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you, who by him do believe in God, that raised him up from the dead, and gave him glory; that your faith and hope might be in God." (1Pe 1.19-21).

Founded and started are 2 different things. I was raised catholic and became protestant before I knew what the word even meant. Probably after Constantine mad Christianity the official religion of Rome and it became the RCC, folks like me rebelled, without a name or identity and became outlaws.

Protestants are those who protest against those who go above all things written in the law and the prophets (sola scriptura) It was reformed at the time of reformation to an earlier time period during the first century AD. And again in the fifteenth century reformation.

The Holy Ghost this signifying, that the way into the holiest of all was not yet made manifest, while as the first tabernacle was yet standing:Which was a figure for the time then present, in which were offered both gifts and sacrifices, that could not make him that did the service perfect, as pertaining to the conscience; Which stood only in meats and drinks, and divers washings, and carnal ordinances, imposed on them until the time of reformation. Heberew 9

The veil is rent.
