But, respectfully, why not fix the problem instead of asking users to live with a work around?

What you see as a problem, we actually see as a solution to a problem. When there is a short edit time, the likelihood of someone posting something trollish and then editing their post to say something else after the thread explodes is nearly eradicated (yes, people do this sort of thing). When a post is deleted by a user, Admin can still access (and restore if we were to choose) the original content but if the content is changed by the user we cannot access or restore the original.
You also have the problem of a fast moving thread where there are literally new posts every minute having their context completely thrown out of whack by a user posting something and then choosing to delete their post 10 min later.
