The word Christian is not an English word, it is a Greek word. As a Greek word it has not been translated but rather tranliterated. A translation transfers a word's meaning from one language to another. The transliteration of a Greek word simply changes the Greek letters into English letters and no meaning is assigned.
Today if you ask most people what a Christian is they will say someone who follows the teachinigs of Jesus Christ, or maybe a follower of Christianity. This is what the word "Christian" has come to mean over time.
But the true meaning of Chrisitan is "annointed one". Anointed with what, you might ask. Anointed with the Holy Spirit. So who was the first man anointed in a special way with the Holy Spirit? The answer, or course, is Jesus. When was Jesus anointed? At His baptism by John. John saw a spirit that looked like a dove descend on Jesus. Jesus didn't do any miracles until AFTER He received the Holy Spirit.
In Acts 11:26 it tells us that the disciples first called themselves anointed ones in Antioch and they backed it up with miracles. If you are brave enough to call yourself an anointed one you better have something to back it up.
How many people today who call themselves Christians would be willing to call themselves an anointed one?
