The word Christian is not an English word, it is a Greek word. As a Greek word it has not been translated but rather tranliterated. A translation transfers a word's meaning from one language to another. The transliteration of a Greek word simply changes the Greek letters into English letters and no meaning is assigned.

Today if you ask most people what a Christian is they will say someone who follows the teachinigs of Jesus Christ, or maybe a follower of Christianity. This is what the word "Christian" has come to mean over time.

But the true meaning of Chrisitan is "annointed one". Anointed with what, you might ask. Anointed with the Holy Spirit. So who was the first man anointed in a special way with the Holy Spirit? The answer, or course, is Jesus. When was Jesus anointed? At His baptism by John. John saw a spirit that looked like a dove descend on Jesus. Jesus didn't do any miracles until AFTER He received the Holy Spirit.

In Acts 11:26 it tells us that the disciples first called themselves anointed ones in Antioch and they backed it up with miracles. If you are brave enough to call yourself an anointed one you better have something to back it up.

How many people today who call themselves Christians would be willing to call themselves an anointed one?

His bride is anointed, a word derived from Christ "the anointing Holy Spirit of God" . But that is not the meaning of the word Christian without any other meaning added.

The word Christian applies to the rules for identifying people by place names, the suffix "ian" denotes residents of the City of Christ named after the founder (Christ) of new Jerusalem prepared as His chaste virgin bride the church.

Its the new promised name He named His bride or people. Previously before the time of reformation having other names to identify His bride.

The Christian is also referred to as a 'saint' . . . holy, separated. I would suggest that 'anointed' is more applicable to this word, 'saint.'

The name, Christian, was not something that the Saviour bestowed upon His believers. It was seem that He preferred the title, 'disciples' or 'children.'

It was first used in Antioch.

"And when he had found him, he brought him unto Antioch. And it came to pass, that a whole year they assembled themselves with the church, and taught much people. And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch" (Acts 11:26).

Some teach that the enemies of the cross gave us that title - as a form of derision - like, Christers.

The etymology goes back to the Greek translating as "in the Anointed."

The name could just have well been Messianic if the people of Antioch spoke and worshipped in Hebrew.
Mashiach or Messiah is the Anointed of Yah(weh), or The Anointed of God.

To your point, Antioch could easily have been considered the 'city of Christ' due to the fact that the missionary effort of the first local church began there with Paul and Barnabas. That is just an opinion on my part.

Yes a city he traveled in brining the gospel . But not the heavenly city set aside as prepared as the bride of Christ.

The rule for identifying people or a group of people by name places like Nicolaitanes, as a denomination or city that was founded by Nicolaus. Or like the Berean's from the city of Berea named after its founder a woman named Viera, A feminine name in Belarus, meaning "Faith". a common Galician surname.

If you study the Greek word "called" used in Acts 11:26 you will find it means "instructed by God". I used to think it was a label given by non-believers in Antioch until I studied this word.

I view a Christian as one who acts like Christ led by the Spirit, and not in word only.

Like the Bible says they profess they know God, but in works they deny Him, which means they are doing wrong things which is not compatible with the operation of God, and His ways, which He is a holy God that hates sin.

Jesus was the first man to be anointed with the Holy Spirit. Paul identifies Jesus and those who are anointed by the Holy Spirit in the same way as NEW CREATIONS. Never before in history had anyone been anointed like Jesus was. And those who follow Him in this anointing are NEW CREATIONS. But it was God was instructed the disciples to name themselves Anointed Ones. Anointed Ones are no longer just himan beings. They are men (generic) who are filled with the Spirit of God and thus enabled to live life as the Anointed Jesus lived it.

A Christian is a person with christ in them, a christ person. We get the word Christian out of the term Christ-person. I'm curious, Paul uses the term in-Christ over 150 times, why do we have such a hard time using the same language as he, and then replacing the in christ term with "in the HolySpirit" wording." Very rare in the forums do you see the in Christ statement I'm curious?
Anyone have anything they can share, very odd.

Probably one of the most misunderstood and misused words in the world.
I once met a man who said he was a Christian because his mommy and daddy were Christians.
I also know some who say they are saved, but their lifestyle is certainly not Christian.
I also know some whose lifestyle would put many so called Christians lifestyle to shame but freely admit they are not saved.

Not to mention it was first used as a term of derision by the enemies of Christ and his believers......
