Tongues were obviously given as miraculous proof of the Holy Ghost baptism. The outward manifestation of the Spirit was crucial in fulfilling prophesy and confirming God's hand. Paul would later quip, "do all speak in tongues". The implied answer is a big fat NO. NEVER does Paul write in his epistles to seek this sign for yourself, in fact, he said whether there be tongues, they shall CEASE, and it would be ridiculous for Paul to make this point if they were to only cease when Christ came back.
Respectfully, you are combining two different manifestation of tongues.
First, we see speaking in tongues accompanying the infilling of the Holy Ghost in numerous scriptures; Acts 2:1-4, 2:38-41 (Jews), 8:12-18 (Samaritans), 10:44-48 (Gentiles), 19:1-6 (Multiple disciples). Why would God chose to use this as evidence of the infilling in the beginning and then change it.
Paul's comments that you mention have nothing to do with the initial infilling of God's Spirit. He is addressing the Spiritual gifting of tongues for edification of the church body.
i truly believe that confusion about tongues arises due to the error of not rightly dividing the word.
My sincere desire is to dig in God's Word for understanding and to share the treasures with others. It is not a matter of needing to be right in others eyes. It's about seeking, studying, and receiving revelation of the truth. Because nothing else matters!
I will stand alone, as will all, and be judged by the Word of God.
No excuses will suffice; wont be able to say my pastor said this, my parent's said that, we were Methodist, Baptist, Lutheran, Pentecostal, Catholic and my church didn't believe this or that.
Bottom line - What did God provide in His Word to guide us? We can accept or reject it. No middle ground.
"Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat:
Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life,
and few there be that find it." Matt 7:13-14
" Strive to enter in at the strait gate: for many, I say unto you, will seek to enter in,
and shall not be able." Luke 13:24
"And when the king came in to see the guests, he saw there a
man which had not on a wedding garment:
And he saith unto him, Friend, how camest thou in hither not having a wedding garment? And he was speechless.
Then said the king to the servants, Bind him hand and foot, and take him away, and cast him into outer darkness; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
For many are called, but few are chosen." Matt 22:11-14
We are admonished by Paul to:
"...work out your own salvation with fear and trembling." Phil 2:12
