Leviticus...I am going in

I just finished digging through Exodus, which took me a long time. Honestly, I still don't understand how all the exact materials used and their significance to the tabernacle within or even if I am on the right track; I am going to move forward, though, trusting His revealing as and how He sees fit. I definitely see moses as a type of Christ, seeing the parallels between the two.

While my teacher is He, I welcome advice, from you well studied, when digging into Leviticus.

The tabernacle is so intricate.............so many little details that all have meaning - lots of symbolism.

It is a replica of the tabernacle in Heaven. Sorta like "on Earth as it is in Heaven."

Leviticus contains the law - dietary, civil, ceremonial, 7 feasts, etc.

When you get a question, feel free to post it and we'll all answer as best we can.

The Holy Spirit is definitely your Teacher! Pray and ask Him first!

My wife and I finished reading Leviticus about a month ago in our latest complete reading of the bible project. This is certainly not one of my favorite books of the bible and is very tedious to read. Still it is part of the Word of God and is there for a reason, the purpose of which I cannot ascertain.

I like the book of Numbers though 'cause of the talking donkey but other than that, another tedious reading. I am currently working on my 5th complete reading of the bible. For the 4th reading, I did the reading and for the first time read the books in order from Genesis through Revelation. It is my wife's turn to read, she picks the books at random, and for every OT book she reads one NT book as a balanced approach.

I love reading the bible and it seems like even though I may have read a particular passage many times sometimes I get a fresh perspective. Also, I noticed certain verses for the very first time even though I have read them before and the passage becomes alive for me.

You should be aware that the names of the five books of Moses in English do not correspond to their Hebrew names.

The Hebrew names are based upon the first words in each book. In Leviticus 1:1 the Hebrew literally states: "And called to Moses and spoke Yahweh to him..." which in the KJV is idiomatically rendered as "And the LORD called unto Moses, and spake unto him out of the tabernacle of the congregation, saying..."

So the Hebrew name of Leviticus is Vayikra or Wayyikra וַיִּקְרָ֖א which means "and called".

It is significant that the tabernacle had been set up according to God's commands to Moses, therefore the LORD (Yahweh) was present within the tabernacle. Since no man has seen God at any time, Moses would only see the glory (or Shekinah) of God -- God's ineffable light which only he could approach. And thus Leviticus begins with God calling Moses out of the tabernacle (His dwelling place on earth during that time) and speaking about the burnt offering (before anything else).

The whole burnt offering is a type of Christ on the cross, so the first thing that God draws our attention to is that one great sacrifice for sin: ...and the priest shall burn all on the altar, to be a burnt sacrifice, an offering made by fire, of a sweet savour unto the LORD. (Lev 1:9). So we already have the Gospel right here, and as Paul said "We preach Christ and Him crucified..." The whole point of reading the Torah is to find Christ in all these things.

Nehemiah How do you keep all your knowledge retained brother? Ok so did I read that right leviticus means called right? Ok and YHVH calls Him out of the tabernacle. Ok this opens up things, thank you. There is just so much instruction, should I understand what each of them mean as I go or just keep reading, if that makes sense? Well thanks Brother. The study of Leviticus is not a particularly favored study by most people for a number of reasons. Most people do not like reading Leviticus because they see it as somewhat tedious. Others feel that because everything we see in this book is so far removed from our experiences, we simply have no point of reference to understand the book. Some feel there is nothing to be gained from such a study so, the book remains largely ignored and untouched in many circles.

Another reason this book is so despised by many is because of its instance upon a strict moral code, particularly regarding sexual orientation between men and women. Adultery and homosexuality are vehemently condemned and both carried the penalty of death. This is not acceptable to our present social conscience. For this reason, more than any other, the legitimacy and authority of this book has been challenged. The idea is that if one can delegitimize the book of Leviticus then the moral code it demands will no longer be valid.

Another reason some people do not invest time in the study of Leviticus, and other difficult books, is out of plain old-fashioned laziness. Most people do not want to be challenged intellectually and this is a book that requires a great deal of study and reflection as well as a good bit of research, and most people simply do not want to commit that kind of time.

Here are some of the objections given by people who neglect giving this book its due attention.
1. There seems to be no spiritual profit for us in the symbolisms and rituals of Leviticus. These rituals are senseless, elaborate, and useless for us today. In other words, Leviticus has no contemporary cultural relevance.
2. The laws found in Leviticus are extreme, arbitrary, and excessively severe. (By whose standard? This is man passing judgment on the word of God based on a human value system.)
3. There is no spiritual profit in the study of all the minute prescriptions of ether its religious or ceremonial nature. (Well, we'll see about that.)
4. The entire system seems childish and was incapable of even instructing Israel in moral and spiritual excellence. What value then can it have for us?
5. The whole of Leviticus seems almost below the dignity and majesty of God. I'm not sure I even know what to say to that.
6. There is no way we can understand this book today. It would take a Hebrew scholar and specialist just to interpret the book.

These excuses represent a pretty typical attitude of a great many people in the so called “Christian” community.

Oh heck, not sure I’d be able to share much, I’ll need to check my files - I had a dedicated study in pictures on Pinterest but lost it but I remember it being such a Blessing in seeing Jesus more.. kinda like getting to know Him intimately.. how it all pointed to Him plus who He is and what He did for us, His sacrifice . . . . another level of deep that amazed me that that even existed! I didn’t venture into OT much until I braved it. It’s worth it though, esp about when it links to the atonement.
— What immediately comes to mind right now is the fire altar and the Blood is the life. (No spoilers hopefully) also I remember the candlesticks and the seat... when you see it all together, well may you enjoy the view !
For me, It made Hebrews make more sense too if you know what I mean.. The minister of the Tabernacle not made with mans hands.. kinda connection.. sorry, it’s late here, brain is going to sleep before my body again..

I saw it on a tv programme, just tried to quickly find it to see if it’s online somewhere... it was part pictoral - Hebrew Pictoral language explaining the furniture.. and part word study, the pictures helped me.. I’m not versed in Hebrew but I learned some and it’s another level of blessing that helps me at least understand the meaning of words and how words have meaning and application, it amazed me how multi-layered God is! Plus secured things more for me. The first Hebrew word I learned was Nourish.. ironic because I was sick at the time, and needed nourishment, but more so for my spirit.. what I mean is, combined, with the Hebrew meanings of each part of the Tabernacle, because of God kinda explaining through His language, it’s a wonderful study that will surely bless you, yes do take your time, take it all in and enjoy every moment... I’ll try and see what I can share .. not sure when I’ll get on again though.. God bless, enjoy the studies

I would offer the significance to the tabernacle and the elements of it are used as metaphors is to preach the gospel in respect to the suffering of Christ beforehand as to the representative glory that followed . Everything used represented a portion of the gospel

We can see men had the treasure of the power of God living in them as born again as shown below. (1 Peter 1:9-12.) It worked in the believers heart signified to look ahead giving the Old testament saint a living hope that their graves would be opened as to the end of the matter. The veil being rent from the top to the bottom was a indication the time or reformation had come, time to restore the order of government of the bride of Christ the church .

1 Peter 1:9-12 King James Version (KJV) Receiving the end of your faith, even the salvation of your souls. Of which salvation the prophets have enquired and searched diligently, who prophesied of the grace that should come unto you: Searching what, or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify, when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow.

Ultimately in ceremonial laws types like Moses and the furnishing as shadows of the heavenly They where used of a certain period of time like that above "manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them" to show God is not served by human hands .

With the uses of the animals in the cerinimoinal shadows the same idea to show God is not served by the flesh or again worshipped by human hands. Using unclean animals and clean animals to help us learn the principle he is not served by the flesh as the things seen.

I appreciate the succinct way of keeping it simple. Yes, I agree it is all about Jesus. Up till the last year or so, I had avoided the old testament in my one on one time with Him. He is helping me dig in to truly understand the word in its entirety, so thank you for reminding me when it comes right down to it, Jesus is the way, the truth and the life. Yeah it amazes me the details and understanding ppl have. I am just so thankful that He gives us a hunger and thirst for the word. Jeremiah 15:16. I never looked at it quite that simply...we are to trust and obey God, through His son. I just know that I am thankful for this... Jude 1:24-25.
