I would agree like @mailmandan has often stated on here that the spiritual experience of the new birth is too profound a reality ... it does seem hard to fathom.

To us.
We haven't suffered like some have.
Thankfully, God has not had to bring me to a place of profound suffering to make me realize that there are people who abandon the profound gospel because of profound suffering.

The main thing saved is saved.

That's right 'saved is saved'.
No if's, and's, or but's about it, and it's as solid as God's Word.
That's why you should hang on to it and not abandon it in unbelief:

"14 ...since we have a great high priest who has ascended into heaven...let us hold firmly to the faith we profess." - Hebrews 4:14

"21 and since we have a great priest over the house of God... 23 Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful." - Hebrews 10:21,23

When you make a conscious decision that you do not want the gospel anymore that is when you have entered into unbelief.
But to wonder if this is all really true is only human.
You can do that and not be in unbelief.
Example, John the Baptist:

This from the man born with the Holy Spirit and who saw with his own eyes the Spirit descend on Jesus and heard the voice of God declaring him to be the Son of God. Apparently, his suffering caused him to doubt what he'd seen and heard from God. But he did not renounce Christ as Messiah and choose to not believe anymore. That's the important part.

You have to hold fast to the original, correct gospel of a risen savior that you heard to be saved.
If you change the gospel to another Jesus (in this case one that is not risen) you are not saved.

He tells us precisely who the 'we' and the 'us' are in the passage:

11Here is a trustworthy saying:

If we died with him,

14 Keep reminding God’s people of these things.

What is it about 'God's people' that you do not understand?
