What is this "Baptism of the Holy Spirit?"

Pentecostals build their distinctive theology on five episodes in Acts regarding the gift of the Spirit from the following:
(1) the disciples on the day of Pentecost (2:1–13),
(2) the believers at Samaria (8:14–19),
(3) Saul of Tarsus (9:17–18),
(4) Cornelius and his household (10:44–46), and
(5) the disciples at Ephesus (19:1–7). In general terms, these “five events in the Book of Acts become the Biblical precedents of Spirit Baptism.”
From reading these scriptures I interpreted them to say it was a normative experience for those who were saved in the early church.
These examples all involve those who were believers before they received the Baptism of the Holy Spirit and spoke in tongues. Through reading these examples I had faith to ask for an receive this experience myself in 1981.

You have redefined the word apostle as gods in the likeness of men.

Abel is the first recorded prophet sent with the word of God . First martyr also. God is still sending prophets. The gospel raises the dead .The dead cannot raise the dead. They can bury.
You cannot call yourself and Apostle unless you do the signs and wonders of the Apostles.

The gift of the Holy Spirit is united to Baptism.
The Holy Spirit equips the person to participate in the mission of the Church.

Apostle "sent one". No adding meaning.

Example . I sent my son to the store with a written list .He moved when I said go and did not add from or take away from my desire .

Do do the signs and wonders of the Apostles. Do you mean like bringing the gospel as God sends us? He perform the miracles if any .

Some attribute that work to the corrupted hands of the apostles making them gods in the likeness of men .If the apostle, martyr Abel could hear it he would probably jump out his grave to today .

A evil generation, natural faithless mankind seeks after lying wonders .We are informed to wonder or marvel not . But rather beleive prophecy. . the revealing of the will. . Wonderments are not a source faith. They are a source of wondering marveling, groovy, far out, psychedelic.

Mark 16:17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;

Signs and wonders. . rather than prophecy the new tongue (gospel) of the believer that cast out demons . Why?

I received the Baptism of the Holy Spirit one day from out of the blue. Probably a year before I was baptized. If you have it, you will know it and need not look any further.

What will out of the blue look like? Wonderful or terror slain in the Spirit

Unexpectedly. I was not religious or seeking Christ. But he filled me with the Holy Spirit causing me to recognize him and follow him for the rest of my life.

Interesting. There is an example of that in Scriptures. You sought Baptism afterwards?

Actually, I goofed. I used the OP terms so he would understand. Had I corrected his terms, I would have said "Only the Apostles had the Baptism and those they laid hands on. (the gentile outpouring too)." I received the fulness of the Spirit that led me to know Jesus is real, causing me to believe in him.

I'm late in this discussion and haven't read all through it but....

Has anyone noted yet that the term "baptism [noun] with the Holy Spirit" does not appear in scripture. It is always a verb "baptised [verb] with the Holy Spirit.
The noun term seems to have been invented by Reuben Archer Torrey in the late 19th century at the beginning of the Pentecostal movement.

the term Baptism (from the Greek noun βάπτισμα baptisma) much further back than 1904 :)

the context of Baptized must be kept where it is used.

Baptized can be used as submerged in water or as John the Baptist said He whose shoe I am not worthy enough to unloosen will baptize with the Holy Ghost and fire. This is to come upon or to enclothe with.

Isn't there Just one Baptism that we are all baptized into?

the word Baptism is used in more than one way in the word of God

Baptized
Baptizing
Baptism

The English language does not provide a good distinction to the word.

Indeed and all that occur from Jesus's Baptism by John, to His final baptism at His hour, make up the one Baptism into the death and resurrection of Our Lord.

I think the distinction between a noun and a verb is very clear.

I was referring to the noun phrase "baptism with the Holy Spirit" as being invented by R A Torrey.

??
Acts 1:8 spoken only to the ones who were there that day at Pentecost.
they received supernatural gifts in order to validate the accompanying message - proof, as it were.
This is true. The gifts are in union with the mission. The 12 Apostles are charged with a mission exclusive to them so the gifts are as well. The Holy Spirit equips the receiver with the gifts required to fulfill their part in the mission of the Church.

Interesting

Experience is not the validator of spiritual truth .the letter of the law , scripture as it is written alone is.

Who was the Son of man the prophet, apostle Jesus seeking when the father gave him words to rebuke the spirit of error The spirit of wonderment (no faith) ?

The father re-established his law as it is written again and again. Three times struck him out, sent him to the bottomless dugout .He did not even see it coming .(supernatural fast, sinking, rising curve ball )

The word it represents the unseen source of Christian faith . And further more God is no longer brining new revelation.

So who did you receive it from? Its not to late to run from it.

Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God. Mathew 4:7
