If we go back to chapter 3 and read further into the scripture past where Dino identified the thought processes of the “mere men”, or the unregenerated natural man, I think we get a glimpse of what the OPoster has in mind concerning brotherly love.
The churches began under great persecution. Also the fear of the Lord from Ananias and Sephira.
But, neither was the root of envy, vain glory, or division.

Absolutely not.
If your behavior in Christ is still immature (factious, jealous and quarrelsome) it shows that you are indeed immature in Christ, or, potentially not saved at all. The immature Christian and the unbeliever can be hard to distinguish sometimes. It does seem that how they respond to correction is how you can tell which they are. Believers ultimately do care about being Christ-like, unbelievers do not.

OP post — not in reply to anyone ... just a post which appears to indicate that up to that point, no one had responded in a satisfactory manner to the OP: Has anyone bothered to read the scripture presented in the thread? 1Cor. 3: 1-3 and especially verse three, is a mirror image of those who debate, and are not open to learning. Verse three is the stature of baby Christians, and the reasons why are stated openly.
OP reply to p_rehbein Post 55: The scripture does not need my opinion. Regarding 1 Cor. 3: 1-3, they WERE Christians that were behaving badly.

In reading 1 Cor 3:1-3 (and we really should read from 1 Cor 1:1 through the end of 1 Cor 3), what I "perceive", and it appears others who have replied to OP, is that those who are carnal and who cause contention, strife, division in the church are those who follow men rather than the Lord Jesus Christ.
imho, the "bad examples of brotherly love" would be:
1. those who do not preach the Lord Jesus Christ but instead preach the doctrines of men;
2. those who follow the men who preach the doctrines of men.

I think you have hit a nail Judges. Possibly our desire to be like Jesus is the very thing that causes division, envy, and strife? I say that because of this....motives of our heart.
Truth concerning the work of Holy Spirit through the cross of Jesus Christ declares our I is crucified with Christ. I being our ego. The thing that we daily put to death. Declaring His work, and believing it.
What then is the fruit of His work?
I can say with certainty that my ego has been crucified with Christ and my Spirit is birthed into His. But, my soul....I put to death that I might wholly reign with Him.

We don’t reign over one another, nor do we view each other ( in the body of Christ) as the enemy. However, there are doctrines of demons. That’s another matter.
This chapter shows how Paul dealt with this. Milk for the babes, meat for the growth.
Knowing the right foundation which is the gospel given to Paul through Jesus.
My personal opinion of the point of this thread is that brotherly love is not possible unless there is a change of minds and we come into agreement with the mind of Christ.
If we read 1 Corinthians 1 through 3, we see what causes division, envy, strife and it is not our desire to be like Jesus:

And yes, this is a lifelong endeavor and we all are in various stages of maturity along the way. From babe in Christ, desiring the sincere milk of the Word that we may grow thereby (1 Peter 2:2) ... on to childhood, adolescence, full maturity, at which point we are no longer tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive (Eph 4:14).
And it is in speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ (Eph 4:15).
Jesus told us By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another (John 13:35).
True - remaining obedient to God secures one's eternal security! It is a choice all are capable of making if in Christ - to either choose to continue faithfully serving Him or whether to make the disastrous mistake of choosig to turn away from God - due to selfish desires to have no one ruling their lives except themselves!
Those who murmur even knowing it is Christ working in them to both will and do his good pleasure . Desiring to remove the log from a brothers eye when they refuse to remove the murmuring speck from their own .
God promises us better things accompany salvation .In so much he will not forget the good works we do offer towards his name. Works that make our load lighter strengthening us to help each other. (Philippian 2:12-13 and Hebrews 6: 9-10 )
I stopped too soon renewed. The Christians desire to be like Jesus comes from knowing Him. And as I pointed out elsewhere, our ego, the I is crucified with Him.
I was saying that before Christ, men want to be their own gods. Have their own way. To rule over their own lives. A desire that will never fill that place within us for our Heavenly Father. For there is no place of rest because something supernatural will take over. The thing that Lucifer desired.
Man is never free until freed from self....we will be our own hard taskmaster.
