It was originally so when you died, living people could identify your cold dead body, as it was permanently on your skin.
first tattoo in Bible was probably the mark God placed on Cain.
the last is 'the mark of the beast' and obviously, people are quite willing to get that nowadays, with the increasingly popularity of tattoos. Dont say you havent been warned.
think when the Bible refers to cuttings for the DEAD its obviously something to do with that..and printing marks well God has his reasons to forbid it for the Hebrews.
Jesus does have marks- the scars...on his hands and feet. but that was where the nails went in at his crucifixtion.
Not sure where this desire to inflict pain on people comes from or why you would pay someone to do it. Tattoos arent actually going to protect you from anything. Though apparently some alzheimers patients gets them on their hands so they can remember their own names.
But if you already know who you are then no reason really to get one, unless you have a memory of a fish or desire to worship a beast....
The christians that did get tattoos I recall it was a fad for them when they were younger which they kinda regret now cos it just shows how deep their faith was at the time..only skin deep!
as for shaving..well in Biblical times all Gods men has beards. Its only in modern times that men are encouraged to shave as it seemed to be a requiremt for the army, along with a crew cut.
The exhortation to not vex strangers in your land also seems to be totally ignored....
