Hello all. I was reading the Book of Job and I was reflecting on who/what Satan is. He appears in the story of Job as one of God's angels, seemingly in a trusted position, as God heeds his advice. In the Book of Job he is described as being one of the bənê hāʼĕlōhîm ('sons of God'). Any responses would be much appreciated. God bless you and may we all be led to righteousness.

Hello.
The Book of Job shows us that God's purpose for suffering is to conform us to the image of the Messiah. Satans purpose is make people curse God, so our Lord isn't heeding the devils advice.

Also, Satan isn't being referred to as one of God's sons, but is distinguished from them.

Does it show us that, or is that simply your interpretation?


And is 'satan' a proper noun (his name) or an adjective (a characteristic of the accusatory angel)?

There are places in the Bible where that is explicitly articulated :)

Referring all the way back to the Hebrew, satan my be translated as adversary or enemy.

If you decide that you will only go by what men's councils tell you about scripture, and ignore the history of scripture, then you will not listen at all to the book of Enoch, and with that decision that you can make, you are never going to know much of anything about the fallen angel: Satan. He is explained in that book. It is up to you.

The men who hid the deep sea scrolls thought of Enoch as scripture, Jude in the NT book of Jude thought of Enoch as scripture, I think you would be safe to at least consider what it says as being of God. You can't know, but you could consider it as possible.

Amen about the book of Enoch yet.. there are parts in there we know have been ..hmm changed? Hard to know. But so much.. like the messiah he talked about and so much more. Can give light to what is said in the word.

Surely the Book of Enoch is non-canonical, and as such shouldn't be taken seriously, right?

Lucifer was the highest created Angel until he fell away from God and became Satan.

This is why he was amongst the other angels(sons of God) in the book of Job.

You are taking the word of men to decide this, and you cannot depend on the word of man. You can choose to blind your eyes to the book, men say we should. You can choose to agree with the people closer to the time Christ was on earth, it is up to you. My opinion isn't worth much, but that opinion is that it is foolish to toss the entire book aside as not the truth, just as it is foolish not to wonder.

Men wrote the Bible, and the Bible is fundamental to the Christian faith.

The Lord Jesus Christ, as a man born of the virgin who received Him by the Holy Spirit, is the ONLY Begotten Son of God.
JESUS is not an angel and He was not created by God as some people falsely believe.
The Son came to earth to save fallen mankind. This was prophesied by God to satan and Eve and Adam in the Garden.

Technically, "satan" is a noun, not a proper name.

For a thorough scholarly treatment of this whole subject, I highly recommend Dr. Michael Heiser's book, The Unseen Realm. If scholarly books with footnotes aren't your thing, he has a more accessible version called Supernatural. His work can also be found on his website, drmsh.com.

Men penned the various books of the Bible under the inspiration and guidance of the Holy Spirit. As Paul wrote in 2 Timothy 3:16, All Scripture is God-breathed. :)

In the Bible, the phrase, "sons of God" is used of angelic/divine/nonhuman intelligent beings and also of humans. However, Jesus is unique; in a classification by Himself, because He is God in the flesh.
