Basically everyone in the developed world uses social media now and most of these nations are more liberal/more secular/God-less than the United States. However, these countries have very low gun violence so we cannot blame social media and more God-lessness entirely, otherwise these countries would have similar rates of gun violence but they don't. No one wants to admit but it is access to guns that is causing gun related death.
What has changed since the 50s (at least in the US) is that young men decided to use guns rather than get into fist fights or (bring a knife) after school. There were way more fist fights back then, any old movie shows this. I really don't know why they decided to use guns, perhaps because fist fights may be considered felonies now. Even drunk driving is considered way more serious now. Maybe these newer laws are putting limits on how younger men express themselves, so they turn to guns.
I do think social media helps fuel isolation, and there is definitely a correlation between increase in social media use and increase in gun violence. So, increase in social media and access to guns may not be a good mix.
But, most people are not fine with banning social media as that would be an infringement in free speech, etc. There is a definitely a mix of reasons causing gun violence, but I think it is inaccurate to put no fault on access to guns at all.
