@MegaTron I've seen worse people at the mall actually. And it's difficult to find friends you don't know on facebook. Don't add anyone you don't know and vice versa. Most people I've tried to add scream and block me. So yeah, good luck making new friends. FB is primarily for people you meet IRL.
Thats actually kinda my point. Parents think its some crazy new tool for pedophiles to get kids as easy as possible. No simply explain to your kids about not adding people you don't know. Im sorry these kids aren't as dumb as you think they are. And there are a lot worse sites they could be going to. And besides its not like its tough to hide stuff on facebook. You can add parents as friends and then still block them from seeing anything you don't want them to see. So seriously there comes a point of trusting your kids to make the right choices and hopefually teaching them well enough so they do so.

I have to agree with 1stillwaters as far as children of all ages. You are the parent, it is your job to protect your kids. My rule of thumb for Facebook would be: kids under 14-15 absolutely not, above that age only if YOU are on their friends list so YOU can monitor what is going on.
I don't know I let my kids play games on facebook with their uncles. My son likes Fish world and zoo world they like sending their relatives "presents" and its alot cheaper to send these type of virtual gifts and it gives them something to talk about over the phone with family. lol.

but how would you keep them from having an account?

they can just set one up at a friends house or on their Ipod or whatever.

Just for future reference since my son is only 5 and doesn't get on the computer without monitoring anyways.

I my personal opinion, my life would be over if my parents monitored my Facebook conversations. It's not like I'm doing anything illegal, it's just that sometimes I have conversations with friends that my parents wouldn't understand. If I go to a friend for emotional, spiritual, or any kind of support, I don't want my dad to have a baby monitor listening to me.
