There has been a lot of talk about the unpardonable sin, but few truly understand it. This "sin" has been committed throughout the history of the church, but most believers have no idea what it is.

I have two questions for us all about this topic.

1) Can you point out who committed this sin in the NT? Please show biblical evidence.
2) Can someone define the unpardonable sin in a few words?

Blasphemy of the holy spirit, Matthew 12:31-32, Mark 3:28-30, and Luke 12:10.

The Pharisees committed it by rejecting who Jesus is. Not saved in the first place.

It doesn't really apply to born again believers. It's rejecting eternal salvation to begin with.

Jesus was talking with the Pharisees and addressing them when talking about it.

If sin is forgiven for a believer by Jesus, then how can sin then undo a believers eternal salvation?

Answering in reverse order:
Blasphemy against the Holy Spirit is attributing the works of Jesus to demonic forces rather the Holy Spirit. This was done by the Pharisees in Jesus day.
This was an illogical conclusion as Jesus points out that why would Satan cast out his own minions and if he did he would be working against his own interests and damaging his own cause.
I personally believe this sin is no longer possible as Jesus is no longer on earth in corporeal form and it is no longer possible to do so.
I realize many feel the unforgivable sin is unbelief. But if this were so none of us would ever make heaven our home as even believers were once in the state of unbelief.

We are born as enemies to God, hostile toward Him. God knows this. He draws us with loving
kindness, offering forgiveness to those who repent of their rebellion toward Him. Jesus was
purposed from before the foundation of the world to make our reconciliation with God possible.
Those who do not repent remain in their sins = judged and condemned under the law.

I don't disagree with anything you have written. But it is clear from the passages concerning this that Jesus is linking blasphemy against the Spirit with wrongful attribution and not unbelief.

Paul said he committed blasphemy... but he did not remain in the ignorance that drove
it, truly repented, and came to believe in the life, death, and resurrection of our Lord.

Surely Paul knew what blasphemy is? Surely he was forgiven? On the grounds of his belief :)

There is a difference between blasphemy and blasphemy of the Holy Spirit. One concerns the Spirit. The other is against God. Jesus was Himself called blasphemous because He made Himself equal to God. This wasn't true of course in His case but I'm just trying to distinguish blasphemy in general verses a specific blasphemy which is against the Holy Spirit.

I liked your first reply point:

"Blasphemy against the Holy Spirit is attributing the works of Jesus to demonic forces rather the Holy Spirit. This was done by the Pharisees in Jesus day."

Don't you think the reverse would be true also? That a form of blasphemy against the Holy Spirit - would be attributing to the Holy Spirit that which is being done by the power of demonic forces.

Perhaps, but I don't see that from scripture. Can you share any verses on this?

There is no direct Scripture as to the point I was making. However, we need to ask: What is Blasphemy? Our dictionaries (Marion-Webster), defines it like this: the crime of insulting or showing contempt or lack of reverence for God or a religion and its doctrines and writings and especially God as perceived by Christianity and Christian doctrines and writings.

This definition is derived, in part, on how the Bible defines Blasphemy. While the Scriptures gives us a clear-cut example of this Blasphemy - attributing the works of the Spirit to the Devil - the primary take away, should be understood as, Contempt for and/or impugning God's Holy nature, in a willing and knowing act of lies and distortion. John Gill had this to say about Matthew 12:31:

but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost, shall not be forgiven unto men: by which is meant, not every ignorant denial of, and opposition to his deity and personality; nor all resistance of him in the external ministry of the word; nor every sin that is knowingly and willfully committed; but it is a despiteful usage of the Spirit of grace, an opposing, contradicting, and denying the operations wrought, or doctrines revealed by him, against a man's own light and conscience, out of willful and obstinate malice, on purpose to lessen the glory of God, and gratify his own lusts: such was the sin of the Scribes and Pharisees; who, though they knew the miracles of Christ were wrought by the Spirit of God, yet maliciously and obstinately imputed them to the devil, with a view to obscure the glory of Christ, and indulge their own wicked passions and resentments against him

Therefore, I would conclude, that if one knowingly and willingly distorted the Holy work of the Spirit... whether by lies of doctrine or actions of the flesh or demonic influences, it would be blasphemy against the Holy Character of the Spirit.

The Pharisees and Scribes, knew full well, that the miracles Christ were doing, were by the Spirit of God but so hated the teachings and person of Christ, they attributed these things to the Devil. Therefore, if one so hates the Truth of God and the Biblical Christ, they adulterate the Scriptures and teach another Savior, they are pushing the Devil's agenda. Not out of darkness and ignorance but out of a self-serving malicious attack upon the Holy Spirit of Truth. Attributing these lies to the power of the Holy Spirit.

This was the nature of my question.

I appreciate you taking the time to inform your assertion but I understood what you were asking. That's why I asked for a scriptural reference.
Without that I didn't want to answer. So while I understand and appreciate your answer, I am loathe go beyond scripture, especially when Jesus makes the understanding very clear.

I think Paul touches on this when he describes those who masquerade as "apostles of Christ". He said that it's "no wonder, for Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light" (cf. 2 Corinthians 11).

@awelight, so if someone does it out of ignorance, do you think they'll be forgiven?

perfect answer

All Christians harbor unbelief one way or another. If we are sincere enough and dig deeper into ourselves with the help of the Holy Spirit, we will find out that unbelief is part of the growing Christian who is on his/her way to knowing the Lord better.

This sin has to do with looking at the miraculous works of God and calling them the work of the devil. These people are so lost and so evil that when God does a miracle and heals someone, they call it evil work.

No Christian would do such a thing. Your first statement has to do with doubt, not unbelief.

Mar 3:28 Verily I say unto you, All sins shall be forgiven unto the sons of men, and blasphemies wherewith soever they shall blaspheme:
Mar 3:29 But he that shall blaspheme against the Holy Ghost hath never forgiveness, but is in danger of eternal damnation:
Mar 3:30 Because they said, He hath an unclean spirit.

Mat 12:32 And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the world to come.

Blasphemy against the Holy Spirit is attributing evil to God when He is good which the Pharisees did by saying Jesus has an unclean spirit.

A person can blaspheme against the Son of man, the flesh,. but not blaspheme against the Spirit.

When Peter denied Christ he did not deny God or say anything amiss about Him, but he denied the man Christ Jesus, the flesh.

When Saul persecuted the Church he did not deny God or say anything amiss against Him, but he went against the man Christ Jesus not believing that He was from God.
