I'd echo my original message: We aren't JUST a body, we have a body, soul AND spirit. The body dies and is asleep, soul is alive and well with the Lord.

But lets assume this is not the case, for argument's sake. Why would we wanna rest our case on PSALMS and ECCLESIASTES instead of plain new testament scriptures? Psalms being SONGS say all sorts of stuff, ever read the imprecatory psalms? Should we take those and say we should curse our enemies cause of it? No? Why not? New Covenant.

You are free to believe what you wish on this topic as I see this is as something that believing one way or another doesn't really make a difference at all in how we live our life or present the gospel. But could you respond to these new testament verses, how do those work with lets say, Ecc 9:5?

2 Cor 5:8 We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord. [This I have heard explained like this: You are dead, sleep, the very next moment you are aware you are in God's presence, that works for me, OK I get it]
Rev 6:9-10 When he opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been slain because of the word of God and the testimony they had maintained. They called out in a loud voice, “How long, Sovereign Lord, holy and true, until you judge the inhabitants of the earth and avenge our blood?” [This one gonna be impossible to explain, here we have DEAD people, (souls) TALKING and saying something, one of many examples in the NT]
The story of the rich man and Lazarus, where once the rich man dies he opens up his eyes in torment and FULLY AWARE of whats going on. [Once again, kind of impossible to say this is soul sleep]

In my opinion (you are free to disagree friend, just saying my view here) these verses are IMPOSSIBLE to reconcile literally with Ecclesiates 9:5. Therefore, I take the view, that Ecclesiastes is talking about things "under the sun" as it says in the book. So that is the POV!
The bible teaches the breath of life made man a living soul, not has a living soul. Genesis 2:7) (Leviticus 17:14 = The soul of flesh is its blood.-) Gen 1:20--fish and things became living souls-- Revelation is symbolic, not literal concerning souls under the alter.

Souls are alive.

I disagree. When a person dies, the person is dead. The soul doesn't "go" anywhere. The person is dead.

I do not believe that the OT scriptures concerning death were wrong.

Thanks! :)

I believe that when Paul said "absent from the body" he was not talking about dying, but about the return of Christ. The rapture. Then is when dead Christians will be raised from the dead, and living Christians changed. It does not happen at death.

[This I have heard explained like this: You are dead, sleep, the very next moment you are aware you are in God's presence, that works for me, OK I get it]
Works for me, too. Death is an enemy (1 Cor 15:26), but if there is anything good about death, while people are dead they are not aware of the passing of time. So practically speaking, the longest someone will have to wait until they are made immortal is the length of their life here.

I don't think it's impossible. I think it's a vision, given to John to let him know that it will be a while before the trib is over. More people will be dying. Also, they were given white robes. What are disembodied souls going to do with robes?

The story of the rich man and Lazarus, where once the rich man dies he opens up his eyes in torment and FULLY AWARE of whats going on. [Once again, kind of impossible to say this is soul sleep]
It was a parable. By the time of Jesus, the Pharisees had adopted the Greek belief that the soul was immortal. Jesus told them a parable that they could relate to. The point of the parable is verse 31. Also, think about it for a minute.. Abraham's Bosom was supposed to be the good side of Hades, right? Some people were supposedly there for over a thousand years. How "good" would it have been, being comforted by Abe, listening to the screams and torment of those just across the gulf?

I think it's quite possible to reconcile them.

"Under the sun" is an idiom representing life. We still use it today.

Living souls are alive.

That proves that the soul is not immortal.
Yes, it is. The soul of God's creation is from God. The death referred to there is that of returning to the source. "The dead know nothing."

"Heaven" is God.

It's sad and ironic that most Christians believe the devil.

Gen 3:4 And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:

..unintenionally, of course. People simply believe what they were taught. The Pharisees had adopted the Greek belief that the soul is immortal, and unfortunately that belief made its way into mainstream Christianity. Death is not the gateway to the afterlife. When Christians die, they don't "go to be with Jesus." God does not "call people home." Death is an ENEMY. A Christian's hope should be in the rapture, not in dying. At the rapture is when dead Christians will be made alive and living Christians changed.

The human soul is not immortal. One day Christian people will be immortal, but for now, death remains an enemy.

Yes, it is sad.

Ecclesiastes 12:7
And the dust returns to the earth as it was, and the soul returns to God who gave it.

And there are those who claim annihilationism doctrine is heresy.

The rapture is a rather elusive concept, not much in the bible about it, not much to hang one's hat on it terms of some future event.

As well,

Jesus makes it clear there is no soul sleep.

Jesus said to him, “I assure you and most solemnly say to you, today you will be with Me in Paradise.”
Amplified Bible.

Ecclesiastes 12:7
And the dust returns to the earth as it was, and the soul returns to God who
gave it.

The Hebrew word translated "soul" in Gen 2:7 is nephesh whereas in your
version of Ecc 12:7 the Hebrew word translated soul is ruwach, which
doesn't mean soul at all, rather, it means spirit, e.g, Gen 1:2 and Gen 6:3.

I think most serious students of the Bible would protest that soul and spirit
are distinctly different and should not be taken to be speaking of the same
thing.

Why does death still need to be destroyed? 1 Cor 15:26
Because all still die and pay their own wages of sin. After the tribulation and Gods day of anger-Jesus has 1000 year reign,( Rev 20:6) during that a resurrection will occur-These will be taught Gods will, but must be tested and that is why satan gets loosed for a little while,( Rev 20:7) many( Gog from magog) as the sands of the sea follow him and get destroyed, then satan gets destroyed and their will be no more need for death and Hades(grave ) anymore.( Rev 20:14)-- only the righteous will remain after that.

I was asking HeIsHere, but thanks. :)

Can't say I agree with everything, though. Maybe another time.

Interchangeable; spirit/soul?

John 3:6
That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
Romans 8:16
The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:
Hebrews 10:39
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
But we are not of them who draw back unto perdition; but of them that believe to the saving of the soul.
1 Peter 1:9
Receiving the end of your faith, even the salvation of your souls.
1 Peter 1:22
Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently:
1 Peter 2:11
Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul;

What did it mean to the Corinthians at the time? As you know they did not have all the letters like we do to cross reference.
Audience relevance is always paramount.

Having said this I am still working on it within a non-futurist view.
