If God Told Me I'd Meet The Right Person in 5 Years, I Would:

  • Be really mad--why do I have to wait so long?!

Hey Everyone,

I know a great person from my old church who has spent their entire life, since their teens, in ministry to the poor, homeless, and orphaned. The years passed by and of course there was talk of whether or not this person would ever find "the one", or would remain without even a relationship for the rest of this person's life.

I'm happy to report that this person is soon getting married... at the age of about 45. I have to remind myself that I'm not all that far away from that age range... (I always tell myself I'm 40 now just so that when I get there, it won't be a shock.) So maybe it might not be when you're in your 40's... but I was thinking...

If God came to you and said, "I have someone for you... but you're not going to meet him/her for another 5 years," how would you react and what would you do?

Would you be upset that you had to wait so long? Joyful that you'd know there was actually someone out there for you? And what would you do with the time in between?

Well, in all honesty, I'd be happy knowing God actually gave me a notice beforehand. I would probably do what I can in God's service before I get that chance to actually meet that person. Naturally, I would doubt that I deserve such a wonderful blessing, and that I wouldn't meet the expectations of whoever she is. But, I would use the time to allow God to form me into whoever she deserves. Even if it just that small amount of years... Change is always good when it comes from God. :)

That's harsh, Zero. :D As in, you'd want to try to trade up in another 4 years??? :)

Kooper--I totally agree with you!! In all honesty I would probably be upset about the wait, but I try to use my time now for service, getting closer to God, and allowing God to work on my much-needed self-improvement!

I think the answers will be interesting to read comparing to ages. At almost 40, it seems like the clock is ticking. So 5 years seems like *forever*. At 23 it's like, I won't be 30 yet. Frankly, I didn't think I would live to be 30, so I would have said "Let's live it up people".

What would I say right now? At 35? I have come to the conclusion that I would be ok with that. Even at facing 40 in 5 years. I've been married, and I know what "wrong" is. I can't afford to do that again.

On the same token? I'm not just sitting on my couch cushions praying God sends me someone passively. "Ask, Seek, Knock". That is how my Bible reads to me.

I would be more than thankful to be honest. But I have a feeling we wont tell us...he wants us to wait without knowing.

In all seriousness, about Zero asking what he could get in a year... I suppose that in a way (oversimplified!), God's plans for us are like an elaborate cake in the making. If God says the cake won't be ready for five years, what would you get if you asked to have it in a year instead of the full five?

Most likely, you'd get a bowl of goopy flour, sugar, flavoring, and eggs... in fact, if it's only been a year and God said He wants you to wait for five, it might not even be mixed up yet!!

And chances are, we wouldn't know what other ingredients it needed (vanilla for extra flavoring? Some sort of natural color to make it pretty?) Only God would know how to make the cake, what to put in it, how long it has to bake, cool off, and then what other details would go into the frosting and decorating... If we tried to do all these things ourselves, we'd probably only make more of a mess, and we'd NEVER see or come to know the final cake as God intended.

If we ask for God's plan too early... all we'll get are some ingredients we don't even know what to do with thrown in a bowl. I'm asking God for the patience and wisdom to wait for the whole, completed cake!!

(MUCH EASIER SAID THAN DONE--believe me, I know!! :D )

That's a very interesting question.
I'd be fine with it; whatever God wants is best.
I certainly wouldn't date or anything...so no holding hands, kissing, etc. that was mentioned in the poll. I don't do that anyways though. So really I guess not much would change...other than knowing. Hmm.

I would feel very happy bc i would know that there is someone out there for me, maybe i would take some classes in church on how to be a good wife, i would try to do more things that i wont do as a married woman, and everything else would be like now while i wait for him.

I would be happy, try to get myself in better shape, seek out mentors, work on my career, and then to be quite honest I think I would "shop around'. I know that from the outset that sounds terrible, but here's my thoughts on it so you know where I'm coming from: I know i'm not going to meet her for 5 years... but it is written that "as iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another." I'm not going to look for a romantic relationship in that sense but more like a closer than normal friendship with girls. I would certainly hold myself for her but if I'm not dating in the mean-time who's to say that it wouldn't be a friend of one of these girls I met WHILE dating/waiting?

Thats easy for you to say, but I'm not a strong, healthy, young 38 yr old anymore like you. ED will probably soon be knocking at my door, and I don't mean the talking horse!! :p

i think i would be happy waiting knowing that whatever comes from the Lord is perfect. i think the fact that one knows how long they have to wait makes the waiting easier.
