The main issue I have with Moffatt's translation is he moved some chapters and sections around in certain books to try and synchronize the flow of the ideas/storyline. He captures some great literary expressions from the original Hebrew and Greek languages. I feel like I'm reading great poetry/prose from highly skilled classical writers!
Yeah, I looked him up and found out about the ordering before I downloaded his work. His notes are pretty clear too!

The Preface and Introduction are superbly written as well. Yes, it's not a perfect translation, but his intent was Holy Spirit inspired.

It's just a fun Biblical text to read!

I did not make the comparison initially someone else on the thread did, I just do not think it is a valid analogy.

The "many, many" is growing exponentially thanks to our education system, so is it the KJV or the illiterate masses?
Well, it would depend on which translation uses the texts, especially the ones that have been discovered since 1611, most accurately.
The KJV is not "the" standard, it is simply "a" standard.

What are the specific issues with Moffatt's translation of this verse?
Moffat's translation of Mark chapter 16 has many problems, the worst being that he has taken snippets out of spurious GNOSTIC GOSPELS and inserted them into the text. If that is not BLATANT CORRUPTION then we do not understand corruption of the text. He has also made gratuitous changes to the text (bolded), and has followed the Critical Text rather than the Received Text.


Moffat's translation (below) is in red and the KJV translation is in blue (side by side)

Moffatt(i) 1 And when the sabbath had passed Mary of Magdala, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought some spices in order to go and anoint him;

Case closed.
We don't have concrete evidence how time was kept. But considering it was Passover and Holiday, 6th hour would be morning and by 3 pm He was on a Cross until 6 pm??

People today get Death Row and 15 years at the point of 6th hour. Ancient People solved problems quickly.

If you mean oldest factual Greek New Testament Text, we have a 3rd Century copy that verifies the Jerome Vulgate New Testament word for word, before it later became manipulated well long after his death in the 7th to 10th Centuries by the Catholic Church in Rome.

You could start by purchasing and carefully studying The Revision Revised by John William Burgon. That is only the tip of the iceberg, since Burgon wrote many other books to prove that the Minority Text is thoroughly corrupt.
Was Burgon KJVO? Would your opinion be swayed if I provided resources in favor of accepting the minority texts?

That is where you need to personally do your due diligence.

But I will give you just one glaring example -- the OMISSION of Acts 8:37, which (1) totally undermines the doctrine that only sincere believers may be baptized and also Romans 10:9-10: That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
Do you understand that water baptism is optional, and that what really matters is that a person has done what Romans 10:9 says to do? When a person does that he is baptized in the Holy Spirit, which is the one baptism that matters (Eph 4:5).

Indeed it undermines (2) a plain understanding of Scripture, and also undermines (3) the doctrine of the preservation of the Word of God and (4) the commandment to not tamper with a single word of the Bible. The NIV adds and substracts words from Scripture at will.
So does the KJV. The difference is that the KJV usually italicizes them, some (not all) newer translations do not.

And I would not say that it is "at will." The NIV translators, and other translators who use all the texts available, work from those texts. They are not "out to deceive" or to lead people astray.

A question was asked in verse 36 and in the King James Bible the correct answer was provided in verse 37. But according to the NIV NO ANSWER WAS GIVEN to a very critical question!

NEW INTERNATIONAL VERSION: ACTS 8 PARAPHRASED AND DISTORTED
26 Now an angel of the Lord said to Philip, “Go south to the road—the desert road—that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.”

You obviously have a very strong opinion on this. It's interesting that although you decry and discredit the modern translations, you have no problem declaring that the KJV translators got it wrong in Eccles. 12:7.

Acts 8:37 is not in texts that are older than the TR. People a lot smarter than me have worked diligently to make the best translations they could, and I am not hobbled by the KJVO mindset. As far as I have been able to put together, here are the verses that exist in the KJV that may be of questionable authenticity:

Prov 3:3; Matt 12:47; 17:21; 18:11; 23:14; Mark 7:16; 9:44, 46; 11:26; 15:28; 16:9-20; Luke 17:36; 22:43-44; 23:17; John 5:3-4; 7:53-8:11; Acts 8:37; 15:34; 24:6-8; 28:29; Rom 16:24; 2 Pet 3:18; 1 John 5:7.

Additionally, while 1 Cor 14:34-35 are in every manuscript, they are located in different positions in some of them. That, and the fact that they essentially silence half of the church, causes their authenticity to be questionable. I realize this will probably upset you, that is not my intention.

Even though I do not think the omission of Acts 8:37 in newer translations constitutes a "doctrinal difference," thanks for responding.

If people are actually interested in a View of the Bible from the Hebrew side that is easy to read and understand.

Plus, how they translated the Ancient Greek Text was using the Greek Language translated into Hebrew then English.

The TLV is a Hebrew view of the Greek New Testament.

I am not even claiming accuracy, but it’s no different than translating Greek to English or in this case, Greek to Aramaic Hebrew to English.

It is a different read but you also get chances to expand your understanding of the original Greek Same Words translated in a unique style but very ancient and modern simultaneously.

While it's fine to note Moffat's choice of source material, that's not something that is going to convince anyone who is not already a TR- or KJV-onlyist.

Both of these are minor variants in word selection, not "gratuitious changes".

Here I agree.

Which "Greek text"? Your criticism is only valid if the source used by Moffat as 'new' rather than 'foreign'. Either way, the point is valid; they spoke in other languages not learned in the normal way.

This is a minor difference in wording.

Jesus was on the cross at noon when three hours of darkness commenced.

Some would maybe want to say this was a solar eclipse, but since Passover
is always on a full moon, that would be a cosmological impossibility

The very fact that heretical Gnostic doctrine was included should have been enough. But you let that slide to go into other matters. No bearing on doctrine? Is eternal damnation a Bible doctrine? And if Moffat changed that to "condemnation" it is not a change of doctrine? How about dullness of mind verses hardness of heart? Does the Bible condemn "dullness of mind" or does it condemn hardness of heart? The text had σκληροκαρδίαν sklērokardian = hardness of heart. WHICH MEANS THAT MOFFAT HAS TAMPERED WITH THE TEXT AND YOU HAVE NO PROBLEM WITH THE TAMPERING OF THE TEXT! Which means that you are on the side of the corrupters (which we have known all along).

Sure, tampering with the Word is God is no big deal to many Christians. Does the Bible present the word "Goliath" as a name?

12 noon = 6th hour
3pm = 9th hour
6pm = dusk
9pm = 1st watch
12pm = 2nd watch
