Anyone know of any books on non denominational Christianity??? I see books on protestant Methodist etc.. But not much on non denomination....???
I have thousands of books in my home library, written by people from every denomination, and even the non-denomination denomination! (I was in so-called non-denominational churches in my first years of being a Christian. I went to several of them, as we moved cities. It was amazing how similar their belief statements were, and how many of these pastors were friends & even went to non-denominational Bible Schools together. So, definitely the same denomination, but just not tied together with pieces of paper).
My question to the OP, is books about what? What topics are you wanting to read? Books on theology? On specific topics in theology? Books in discipleship or Christian maturity? Books on Christian history? Commentaries on the various books of the OT & NT? Survey courses on the entire New Testament or Old?
Perhaps methods of evangelism and how to reach the lost? Books on the gifts or the fruits of the Spirit? I have books on all these topics and many more!
But one thing I have to say- I am a Baptist. I've been to Baptist seminary & an independent theological school with many Baptists. I have used books written by people from many denominations. I was most shocked when I had a text book written by a Catholic! In a Baptist seminary! But God had given me one of my few personal visions the day before I read that book. The book revealed the same vision! Plus, the book was so irenic in spirit, no one could walk away thinking the topic and discussion was only for Catholics.
What determines whether a book is worth reading isn't whether a Presbyterian or a Pentecostal, a Methodist or a Catholic wrote it. It doesn't matter if it was written by a Baptist or a non- denominational person. What matters, is that it contains the truth of God's Word. It might expand, or apply or explain the background, the language or geography, but it is something that can be agreed upon by most, if not all Bible believing Christians. There may be some details that someone might disagree with. I read a book on Christians and politics by Wayne Grudem for a class. I did not like the man, as I knew he was a real fundamentalist, in the worst kind of way. But it was required reading, so I held my nose & started reading!
To my surprise, I agreed with about 95% of what he said! That's because he supported his points on each topic with Scripture, and in context. I had greatly misjudged this man, based on some small details. I didn't agree with his views which were more American fundamentalism, and those were the topics least supported with Bible verses. Things like gun control & universal health care, kept me at odds with those topics & the professor and some of the other students. (Most American conservatives think gun control & universal health care are leftist beliefs! But in Canada, no one is against universal health care, not the most right wing people that live in my country! Although we all agree the system is being destroyed by politicians looking for short term gain, rather than having long term goals!)
So two things:
1. What topics or ideas do you want to read about?
2. Do you know the Bible well enough to compare and contrast these books with? The Bible is absolute truth, against which we compare all other books, ideas, opinions and concepts, Ultimately, a book containing truth is based on the Bible.
"Preach the word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage—with great patience and careful instruction. 3 For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine." 2 Tim 4:2-3
(I might also suggest a course in Hermeneutics or Bible interpretation. The text books I used for that topic were used by many denominations!)
I will suggest a great book to read, not too difficult, about reading the Bible. "How to Read the Bible For All Its Worth!" By Gordon Fee & Douglas Stewart. I won't tell you what denominations the writers come from, but it is not mine! Yet I recommend this book over & over as a solid introduction to how to understand & read the Bible!
