My first attempt at making Chinese Sesame Balls was a successful venture.

Mom hasn't been eating as much as she should but gave them a high rating. Dad only got two of them before they were gone. :giggle:
The bean paste in those is delicious.
I wish the grocery stores sold those beans.
They were the same color as kidney beans, so I bought a bag and added sugar.
Was NOT the same kind of bean.
😝

Anyhow, speaking about dinner, I just finished eating black eyed peas in bone broth with liver and asparagus. Very good...yum.

I haven't tried the red bean paste version yet. I used a mung bean and coconut filling but I do want to eventually try the red bean paste. Thanks for the caution. I looked it up and the recipe calls for Azuki beans, which supposedly may help benefits for cardiovascular health and people with type 2 diabetes (four-week trial demonstrated lower markers of inflammation).

Those were my favorite at the Asian restaurants if we are talking about the same thing. They were like a chewy glutenous donut hole filled with sweet bean paste and rolled in toasted sesame seeds. VERY tasty!
Then I learned that I was gluten intolerant, so I couldn't eat them and dropped into a deep depression. 😄 If I find some, I can make it without the dough.
Anyhow I will look for those again. The Asian market went out of business but will see if maybe I can get them somewhere else.
They sound very healthy.

The recipe I tried used glutinous rice flour, rice flour, and mashed potato flakes for the dough. I might just try a special batch substituting tapioca flour for the glutinous rice flour to see how they turn out when I try it with the red bean paste filling.

My daughter is a lover of perhaps not all things Japanese, but certainly many... she taught herself
the language, all three alphabets, could understand the spoken work and speak it herself... we
watched a lotta lotta anime, series and movies, she has collections of manga that she translated
to English to share with others, and sushi? Yum. Tempura? Yum. It is our go-to when we have
dinner out somewhere, or I am picking up something to take over to her place when I visit.
So naturally she has tried her hand at making mochi. I like Asian food and so does she!

That is so amazing!
She is brilliant!
Even foreign language teachers say it's rare for children to learn a language fluently unless they grow up speaking it with parents and friends.
Sushi / rice wraps are my favorite too.
It's all delicious. Is the mochi a rice flour?

Yes, and to think it all started with Sailor Moon is pretty amazing. She had a terrible time in high school, so her applying herself to this endeavour of learning Japanese was pretty awesome, and I eventually talked her into going to college to study it formally, which she did for a year, with her wondering all along what she would do with it (she aced the year, and I always remember her final mark of 98.6 because it is human temperature in Fahrenheit LOL) ... but she was getting to an age by then, well out of high school, that she wanted to be employed (a good thing LOL) and knew she did not have a lot of schooling years left in her (haha). She was looking at the possibility of working in a medical office (I didn't think she would like that, but what do I know?), and then she was hired at a veterinarian hospital, with zero training or formal education for it, which is perhaps pretty rare. It was where her dad's family had always taken their pets for care, and she may have been hired on the strength of her having volunteered once a week for three years at a cat sanctuary that housed about 800 or so rescued feral cats, where she provided care for cats with feline AIDS and/or leukemia. She has been at the animal hospital now for about ten years, which is another miracle, because she has physical issues that, honestly, after she described her very first day of work to me, I wondered, how in the world is she going to do this??? But she has persevered. Lots of kids say they love animals and and would like to work with them and one of the first things I ever wanted to be "when I grew up" was a veterinarian, but few actually end up doing it. She has three cats and two dogs and takes incredibly good care of them. Any who, yes, mochi is made with rice flour... The Chinese mochi balls covered with sesame are sometimes a bit greasy, but I really like the red bean ones, and my daughter had little mochis with ice cream in them at Christmas time! They were pretty tasty, too...

What a beautiful story of that important chapter in your daughter's life. She would be so happy that you shared that. 😊

Thank you, H&H! I am always impressed when she bakes anything LOL and mochi is really pushing the boundary of what we might normally bake so even more kudos to her for that LOL. And yeah, I tell her how proud I am of her, for her studies yes, but also the work she does, despite her infirmities and lack of education etc, and also especially for how well she looks after her animals. She is the alpha dog to be sure, heh, and her dad and aunt used to razz her sometimes and tell her she was too strict with them because, for instance, she would not not let the dogs beg for food at the dinner table while we were eating, and I would always take her side on stuff like that, because somebody needs to be the boss of those dogs, and she has them very well trained, and they really are such lovely loving pets, so happy and willing/eager to please, playful, and obedient, and my goodness they make such a fuss when I show up haha, dad and auntie used to say, how come I never get greeted like that? Since she has not really used the Japanese for quite some time, I think she has forgotten a lot of it, which is perhaps unfortunate, but then, she has no real use for it any more...

I've been eating quick and easy to make food since Mom has been in ICU.

Tonight I stopped at the store and treated myself to a blessing since she is so much better. 🥲

I boiled some rice and fried cheese stuffed portobellos. I added baby spinach and a bit of red sauce.
Wow! Spinach made the difference.
That was seasoned with sesame seeds and that's it.
It was still quick and easy, certainly worth trying again.

I just bought a tub of Tillamook Black Cherry too!
Chances of that!
I have really cut back on my intake of Chapman's Black Jack Cherry frozen Yogurt...

But I do eat about one apple a day... Do you hear that, doctors? Keep away!!! LOL

That's a good thing to have every day.
You'll find this newer saying funny.
A stick of butter a day keeps the doctor away.
