It's brought lots of humor and amusement, and has brightened at least 2 of my days.
And it got me to try something new! Even if that something looks like it has done hard time on the Lake of Fire

This thread has been a bright spot for me too with generous dollops of amusement.

Vegemite is the leftover from making beer the american vegemite would be protein shake whey which is the leftover from cheese and yogurt production or molasses.

Carrie, did you know american sugar is primarily made from sugar beets?

As long as the sugar is not made from those purple beets we are good.

They smell worse than a porta potty. Dead crickets have to be removed every day. The good news is that the prices might come down for pet lizard owners! 😄

I'm reminded of when I was in the 5th grade and decided my science fair project would be about crickets. My dad had a terrarium globe that I used and my grandmother got me a bunch of crickets from the pet store. I lived in the country, so I had to ride the bus for going on hour with my globe full of crickets to school. I never thought about them smelling...maybe that's why I only won 3rd place? lol

butter - 9.9%
vegemite - 0.1%

You pretty-much need to make sure you cannot really taste the vegemite.

Why is vegemite getting all the press? Marmite is the OG salty spread.

Vegemite is just Australia saying "We like something another country makes, but we don't want to ADMIT that, so we're going to make our version."

I tried Marmite once. I don't know how it's made, but it tasted like it was made from fuel oil or something similar. Never again.

From what I hear (I wasn't there at its inception) it was what they did with yeast after it was through brewing beer. They wanted something with high protein, and there was all this waste product from beer making, so... Voila tout!

Considering Australia is England Lite and the US is England Zero, we surely have an equivalent to Marmite, or a reasonable substitute. I picked up a jar of Nutritional Yeast per the suggestion of a Youtube Dr. Eric Berg DC. I have no idea what to do with it, though, other than adding it to a stew or a meatloaf, and it'd never occurred to me to try to make any sort of spread for toast out of it. Lisa Price of FoodChamps (2021) lists it last among 5 marmite substitutes but advises that if you're looking for the creamy texture of marmite, this may not be your choice for substitutes. However, among a "FAQs: Are there other substitutes..." segment, she lists peanut butter so, I'll conclude my search for the North American Marmite Zero must be peanut butter

I'm so glad that you've enjoyed this thread! The best part of writing threads is the discussion that follows, and it's all determined by the amazingly awesome people who take the time to contribute.

You never know which threads are going to fall dead in the water and which ones are going to take off, so I guess that's why I keep cranking them out.

I myself am amazed that we've filled 10 pages of talk about controversial foods, most of which has been about vegemite/marmite!

I am eagerly awaiting the day when your own vegemite adventure begins, and who knows, might be inspired to do the same.

My "power"/Vegemite is supposed to arrive sometime today. If it arrives late, I might not be trying it until tomorrow. The delivery man here usually delivers at about midday though. Soon, using Moses' suggestion on the proper way to consume, I'll be trying it and reporting back! The excitement is on

I got the Vegemite, y'all! I opened it and sniffed it. I think it smells good, but it might be that I'm strange (just a wee bit ). Anyway, I gotta do a few things before I lay down the verdict. I'm going to try it with a thin layer and a thicker layer. Stay tuned!

Tried Marmite. Road tar, axle grease, take your pick. I had live sea urchin once, and as awful as that was it was a thousand times better than Marmite.

I have tried the Vegemite. I put a thin layer on one piece of toast, a bit thicker layer on another piece, and a yet more thicker layer on a third piece. I didn't feel like I was getting enough of the flavor with the thinnest layer. I went for the third piece. At first I thought it was tasty, but the third or forth bite was kinda intense. So I went for the second piece (which in the image I included in my post above would be the 'Vegemite for Regular Consumers' piece). I do not give it a thumbs down. I'm not necessarily ready to give it a thumbs up. It's not bad, but I'm not at that "I can't wait to have more" stage. I will be trying it again, with the 'Regular Consumers' amount.

I recorded myself having the Vegemite if anyone feels like watching that. I don't know how long I will keep this video up. I have not recorded a video in years and I've only ever recorded a video for one person at a time, not more than one person...so I'm a bit apprehensive about posting this. Then I thought, "What the heck."
Btw, I like being outside, so I recorded this outside. If you don't like sun rays or the outdoors, you might want to skip it.

You have the face of one who is good at taking care of people. You have the voice of one who can get upset if you think you need to, but you don't like to. (That may not seem to make sense, but I know some people who DO like to get upset for some reason.) I get the impression you weigh your reactions before you react.

LoL, it's funny you mention that my accent isn't Okie...'cause everyone here thinks I sound weird! I go out of state and no one says anything. I often get asked by fellow Okies where I'm from. After I tell them Oklahoma, they ask where my folks are from. They are often surprised when I say Oklahoma. One lady, who I think I may have mention in another thread a few months ago, she said I sound like a cartoon lol.

I would say you are definitely correct, I do weigh my reactions. I like to ponder things, I don't want to make any hasty or emotional reactions. It's really not my character.

Anyway, I'd say you are very correct overall.

I really didn't feel like I got a yeasty flavor. I mess with yeast often. Maybe it's just me though. It wasn't salty, like I've read some people say online. Not like salty food (like fries), that is. I use soy sauce often and I didn't think it was like that either, although others think that's how it tastes. Everyone's taste buds are different though. I liked the smell. It reminded me of something I'd smell in my grandmother's pantry. I'm not sure what exactly was in her pantry that smelled like that, but the smell took me back to her pantry. I'm going to try it again with the not too thick, but not too thin layer. I feel like a second try will tell me more. Or like daisyseesthesun said, try it 3 times.
