Hey Everyone,

Since we already have a thread going about cheese, I figured we might as well throw a few nuts into the mix.

When I was a kid, my grandparents had a routine where we'd play cards and my Grandma would give us what she called "Crud Dishes." My Grandma was a hoot! She'd be like, "All right you kids, come and get your crud!" My Grandma and my Mom were both rather healthy about food, but this was my Grandma's acknowledgement that it's ok to splurge on pure garbage every now and then.

Our treasured "Crud Dishes" would usually be a mix of something like Cheetos, Pringles (all things my mom rarely bought that we hardly ever got at home) -- and mixed nuts.

Taking a cue from my Grandpa, my favorite have always been the cashews. I love that they have just the right amount of "chew" -- not too hard, not too mushy, but with an almost creamy consistency.

Now I know some things thrown in with "nuts" aren't even technically nuts, but let's go out on a limb here.

* What are your favorite kinds of nuts (or things that are often thrown in as nuts) and why?

* What kinds of nuts do you NOT like, and why? (I find walnuts to be bitter, but still eat a few, as they're supposed to be healthy.)

* If you or a loved one has nut allergies, how do you cope in a world that's gone nutty? Seriously, I can't imagine what it must be like for parents to send their nut-allergic kids to school. I would be a bit terrified!

* If you or a loved one can't have nuts, do you have anything you like to enjoy as a substitute? (What do you have in place of peanut butter, if anything, etc.?)

I prefer cashews, pecans, almonds, and walnuts.

I buy cans of mixed nuts as a weekly snack. Those cans that are labeled " this mix has less than 50% peanuts" are lies! 😠

I'm already nuts. Nothing more required here.

I do like me some pecans though.

Ever since I lost my last two opposing grinder teeth, I have been bigger on nut butters than whole nuts. Consider them already chewed. Fortunately the salvage grocery always has enough peanut butter and almond butter at real cheap to keep me supplied.

I don't like any nut butter with oils, sugars, all that junk. I just like nuts, a little salt and nothing else in my peanut butter.

I like pecan pie nuts, filberts, and brazil nuts best. After that I'll take almonds, cashews, pistachios, and walnuts. I like peanuts that are salted and in the shell. They have to be in the shell because I have a wonderful memory of sharing salted peanuts in the shell whenever we were in a motel room. That's about the only time we got some, and now I remember my dearly departed mom whenever I eat salted peanuts in the shell.

If pistachios didn't cost an arm and a leg I'd be eating them until I turned into the incredible hulk

All nuts are good, but I get tired of almonds quickly. My great uncles owned a trucking business in Central CA and trucked a lot of them. There were always 3 or 4 large bags of almonds in our freezer.

I like mixed nuts also, but can only eat them in small amounts at a time, which is probably a good thing! I do not particularly care for peanuts per se, but we always have peanut butter at work for those days when nothing else made it for lunch that day. However, the nut mixes I buy do not include them. They are usually comprised of almonds, Brazil nuts, cashews (yes, a favourite), hazelnuts, macadamia nuts, pecans, and walnuts. The majority of the nuts are almonds and cashews which suits me fine, and I often add more macadamia nuts to the mix. I used to eat a lot of raw unpasteurized almonds, but got too many bitter almonds over time, and that put me off eating almonds exclusively, completely. Bitter almonds contain traces of prussic acid—also known as hydrocyanic acid—in its raw state. Hydrocyanic acid is a solution of hydrogen cyanide and water. The byproduct is an organic version of the well-known poison cyanide. The worst symptoms of eating bitter almonds can include your nervous system shutting down, breathing difficulties, and even death.

I just had a couple handfuls of almonds after dinner. I was surprised to notice that the bag said,

" Once bag is opened, refrigerate or consume within 7 days for optimum freshness."

That might explain some things.
They say "You are what you eat.". 🤪

I would not necessarily say that I dislike nuts, but I definitely can, and pretty much do, live without them.

When I was younger, I used to eat a fair amount of salted cashews and pistachios, but, as I got older, I came to realize that it was not really the nuts that I enjoyed eating, but rather the salt that was on them. For example, as I ate some unsalted cashews for the first time, I remember thinking "These nuts pretty much taste like wood without the salt."* Seeing how I try not to eat too much salt, I have removed salted nuts from my diet.

Also, I am really not a fan of having to grind my food with my teeth, and some nuts are a bit harder to chew than the types of food that I normally consume. We have a vending machine in the breakroom at work, and, occasionally, I will purchase a bag of Cracker Jacks (I really do not eat a lot of junk food). Even then, I will eat the caramel-coated popcorn, but the peanuts always wind up in the trash. The closest I come to eating a nut these days is when I eat a Reese's Peanut Butter Cup.

There used to be a commercial for Peter Paul's Almond Joy and Mounds chocolate. The former contains almonds, and the latter does not. The jingle for the commercial included the words "Sometimes, you feel like a nut. Sometimes, you don't." For me, it is normally, if not always, the latter of the two.

That is it for me because I have nuttin' else to say.

*No, I have never eaten wood, but if I did, then I would imagine that it tastes like certain unsalted nuts.

Good thing that asterisk was there. You know with a group of smart alecs like us, somebody was bound to ask when you have eaten wood.

Just a friendly caution.
Watch for sore joints, soft tissue from oxalate buildup. In smaller amounts the body can usually remove the protective substance found in nuts. The compound is a crystalline toxin that builds up at times we consume large amounts or ongoing amounts of high oxalate containing foods.
But there are health benefits too, so enjoy the nuts. They are a treat in moderation.

We had at least 100 heads of sunflowers this year, so yeah, there are a lot of sunflower seeds... Next year, we will be growing peanuts or Russian giant sunflowers! But growing up, my favourite was caramelized peanuts.

Have you ever planted pecan pie seeds? If I had a garden I'd consider allocating at least a little space for that.
