Yes. In our Western world, money is power, and its emasculating to a husband for his wife to have more power than he. As others have noted, there are exceptions, but this is largely the rule. For example, a woman who didn't exert her power over her husband might not be viewed in this way, but the danger would be in such a relationship, the husband might be foolish and squander her wealth (human nature being what it is).

King David married Princess Michal when she likely had more money than him, but when you're in the business of smiting Philistines, money is not the the chief determinant of power, so this probably wasn't an issue.

Oh,
For those who don't have the right friends to teach you the wrong vocabulary.....

A schmeel is the person who has to grab the biggest and best for themselves when a buffet of equal choices is available.

Like a platter of steaks you try to grab the biggest.....
A plate of chocolates you grab the biggest one....
You always bring the cheapest gift possible to a gift exchange and if it's a dirty Santa you try to go home with the best gift.
When it comes time for mundane chores you try to get away with doing the least by accomplishing just enough to get by.

A schmeel always tries to get the most for himself/herself with providing the least every time.

It's a Yiddish word and very uncomplimentary.

What Johnny describes is, as near as I can tell, most closely related to a schmuck.

I thought a schmuck was the useless skin thrown away after circumcision. A powerful insult, but probably overkill for someone who is overly fond of his buffet choices?

My son

I heard that phrase at the beginning of every Laverne & Shirley episode and always wondered about it.
I just notice the "My son" at the top..."
It was residue from an anecdote I started to share and decided to forget it.
In case that gave cause for anyone to wonder.

No. My father made less than my mother did at one time. He was an accountant and she was a nurse. Different pay scales. No one thought less of him for that.

When I was working I regularly made more $$ as a construction electrician than my wife with her master's degree.

Finally after years she finally made like $200 more one year. (I stopped all overtime work to my boss's dismay)
She was so thrilled over it. I never kept score but she did.
But she did make me work the overtime needed when I wanted an expensive new toy. I didn't care one bit. I just wanted the toy. And my boss was happy about it too.
And indeed....I was starting to get fat because I would cook 3 lbs of bacon on Saturdays and then use the drippings to cook hash browns. So my waistline got a little smaller.

It was a win-win for all involved.

Neither of us is economically abusive. We are a family in every sense of the word. I are a "we". We are always considering the WHOLE family first above everything. And we take off from work to vacation together....even if it's just day trips. She almost had a meltdown when I mentioned I needed a break with her to anywhere. It just didn't "compute" with what she thought was normal for our household. (We had been behind for a long time...and she grew up that way of always being poor) But I, while not aware of the specifics, knew the generalities....and thought with a little planning we could make a day trip happen. We did. She was thrilled. We were building our life together and it was working.

3 pounds of bacon? holy heavens!!! & did you all eat all of it at 1 sitting?

they have told her it's emasculating to have a wife that makes more money than they do.
I believe the part where they said that it's not appealing... because it's not appealing; but this part sounds made up- like it's a stupid feminist's rationalization for why she is rejected by men.

I didn't get any for years....I had withdrawal symptoms. Thick sliced slab bacon. Not the skinny little layout packs....slab bacon. Really thick sliced to where the meatlest parts are like country ham. Good stuff!

Now my bacon consumption is moderated ALOT.

I still get it when I want. I just don't eat as much as I used to.
But I do make my own breakfast sausage these days with fresh sage from the herb garden. Makes a huge difference. Mine is a LOT leaner and chunkier than store bought (by design). I cook off a pound on Saturdays and save some for Sundays. Where we reheat it and put it on Sourdough English Muffins (also home made) to eat on the way to Church. Makes that crap at McDonald's really taste like crap. Like spit it back out bad. (Even if it's perfectly done....it's just bad food when they have to paint brown on the Grey sausage just to make it look seared)

Breakfast at my house is an experience.
I am a recovering chef.

so neat about the sausage & breakfast. reminds me of our breakfast. on saturdays or sundays, we have a "bacon-waffle" breakfast listening to old country music. i prefer Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee & my wife goes for tim horton's decaf coffee.

I usually do a blend of sumatra and yirgochef myself.

Music? Too early for that usually....unless one if us has a song stuck in our heads. (We play it so the other can share the annoying ear worm) But we do talk. We like talking to each other. We are best friends.

you are sharing everlasting good times!

you are sharing everlasting good times!
No kidding!

We were talking today about if somehow we were able to go back in time and could say 3 words to our 18 year old selves....what would we say?

And we both agreed that it would be best to leave some things alone because of how good things are right now.

However,
If I could have a do-over....where I take all my current knowledge and wisdom back with me to when I am 18.....and live the next 40 years over again.....

What would I do differently?
(Besides taking advantage of money making opportunities)
I'd sneak into GA to peek at my wife....while she is growing up. Just occasionally....just to make sure she is doing OK.

Probably become a contract IT network person....earn 6 figures in my slippers long before it was common. Give myself lots of vacations to places too.

Otherwise lay low....try to blend in.

Christ centered marriage between a husband and a wife is a powerful union that money can never tarnish. They work together in awe of the most High God living to see him at work in their lives , their childrens lives ,and their ministries. Money is not important to them because , they know that they themselves are the Lords possesions so everything else less important like money is also his! They stay close to God together through love and prayer. Why should they fret over trivial things like who makes more of this or does more of that when they are the ultimate team created by God to work together. They are one unit! they are one flesh ! and so whatever they do blesses both and glorifies god.

I was reading about this topic somewhere else. I find it interesting. What do ya'll think?

No a Christian couple should have just one bank account. if I bring mine and my husband brings his and our problems are all solved. we live our love
