Hey Everyone!

I'm always interested in what brings out the inner child/fun side of other people. :)

As a kid, my parents were watching every penny. There was a girl in my Lutheran grade school class whose mom was very stylish, and she bought her daughters all the latest in fashions and accessories. I can admit that at the time, I. Was. Jealous.

But my parents often told me, "You don't need more junk that's just going to be thrown away!" And now as an adult, I tell them that one of the best lessons they ever taught me was delayed gratification (I second guess almost everything I buy now,) and saving for a rainy day (not to mention, tires that don't want to stay inflated.)

However, as an adult, I do splurge every now and then on little things that make me smile. One of those things is Hello Kitty, because this girl in my class always had the cutest pencils, erasers, and cases with the Hello Kitty characters on them -- but my parents always said no.

These days, I'm very glad my parents said no. But at the same time, to me, Hello Kitty is a symbol of where I'm at in life -- out on my own, making my own money, and choosing (carefully!) how to spend it. I obviously don't just buy any old thing with a favorite cartoon character slapped onto it. But I do enjoy browsing what's out there.

Years ago, a family member gave me a soap dispenser similar to this as a gift:

shopping

The one I have has arms that "flap" when you dispense the soap, and it makes me smile -- which I see as a bonus when doing a mundane chore like washing dishes. However, she is very old and unfortunately, has cracks in several places. I've been looking for a replacement, but can't find one I like (or at a price I'm willing to pay!)

In the meantime, I'll just have to be content with my coffee mug to give me my daily dose of childhood fun instead.

What about you? :)

* What things have you bought for yourself as an adult that you couldn't have, or couldn't afford as a kid? It could be toys, accessories, a game, electronics, a hobby (I bought a perfume-making kit one year, as that was another thing I asked Santa for but never got!), a car, going on a trip or to a certain place, eating at a specific restaurant, etc. -- anything goes!

* Are you glad now that you had to wait, or do you wish you could have had those things back then? Why or why not?

* Was it as fun/fulfilling as you thought it would be when you finally obtained those items/went where you wanted to go, or were you disappointed?

* Are there things you wanted that you bought for your kids instead?

I've done this a lot, too. I love toys with working parts (sinks that you can run water through, trucks and cars with doors that open, etc.) and bought many an item for my friends' kids that probably drove the parents crazy!

* If you are a parent or raising kids/teens, how do you teach them the balance between buying the things they want vs. spending money wisely?

I would love to hear your thoughts! :geek:

(And to also see pictures if possible, even if they're just ones found on Google!)

(I second guess almost everything I buy now,)

Honestly, I second, third, and sometimes fourth guess almost everything I buy.

I don't know of anything specific that I wanted as a kid that I would buy now.

Well, there was a car I really wanted back in 1988. Mazda had redesigned the RX-7 and I was determined to get one no matter what. That car was going to improve my prospects with women. Time has proven that not having that car or being a hit with women was a good thing. The engines in those cars never held up well and I was just better off socially. 😁

Good topic Seoul !!! 😎

Growing up, I mostly went over to friends houses and played with their stuff since we didn’t really have a stable living situation, from like 1994 to 2014. The most stable time during those years was probably from 2000-2002. After 17-18 years of working various jobs, I decided to splurge from November 2023 to summer of last year….buying almost every Apple product you can buy and other various things. I probably spoiled myself once every other week or once a month, with something I’ve always wanted.

Just so you know.

"I'm going through my second childhood.

It's awesome! I have money this time around!"

When I was a kid dad got an nes. Like, the first ever nintendo. The kind where you have to push the cartridge in and push it down until it clicks. That old.

They kept it in their bedroom! Way off limits for us kids! Oh the travesty! I mean occasionally we were permitted to play it, but not nearly often enough from my perspective.

In retrospect that was a good idea. For one, video games were not nearly as good back then. None of them had a good story.

Also I have memories of playing instead of memories of video games from my childhood. I learned how to walk on stilts. One time, just for fun, I stood on a 55 gallon drum and rolled it by balancing my weight on one side or the other. That's something you don't get from a video game.

Now I'm an adult, I have my own money, and video games are much cooler now. And now that I have a good life balance and the perspective to keep them in their proper place so they don't take over my life, I am enjoying them quite thoroughly.

 A house...
and EVERYTHING that goes with it

Now let me get a little more specific...

As a child I would often play house. There were the baby doll and stuffed animal children, the toy kitchen set, and the imagination to go with it all. However, there never was a playhouse outside for me, just my tiny bedroom. :cautious: BIG difference between a tiny organized little girls bedroom and a big house for a family of 5

OH! And I never had POWER WHEELS, you know, the kids version of a car.
iu
but have one now (uh, a car that is, not a Power Wheel)

I often find myself spending everything on the kids/family/household. I think I'm going to splurge on Mama now and get myself one of these:

I've been seeing the highland cow popping up everywhere and on everything recently; and, when I first noticed it, it really made me smile.

I've been mostly frugal throughout my life and have always lived below my means. Now that I'm a silverback I do splurge in some areas and can afford to after living below my means all those years. I have a laptop workstation that is crazy expensive, at least in my opinion. I get a new cell phone every couple of years because I like the latest technology. I buy new vehicles with almost all the bells and whistles (that doubles the price), and I bought a house. When my kids were growing up I bought them ATVs and snowmobiles, among other things. Food-wise I used to never buy anything expensive. Now I'll buy halibut, prime rib-eye or prime filet mignon, etc.

I always wants the power wheels but never got one either.

I’m surprise…cause from like the day I was born till I was like 5 or 6, we were loaded.

i guess learning how to ride a bicycle was more important to my parents.

It's ok , you are worth it sister!:):coffee:(y)

Aw, thank you, Brother Shittim -- very kind of you to say. :)

I am really excited over the thought of you getting this shaggy cow, @Godsgirl1983!!

Although I'm not really into cows, this one is definitely an exception! All that fur and those little horns!

I can't wait to hear what you name him! :D

I have always found it to be an egregious offense that even growing up, it seems like the boys' toys were always made much cooler than the ones for girls. It just always seemed like there was so much more you could actually DO with the toys for boys! Guns that talked and made laser beam noises! Cranes that lifted toy cars! Pirate ships with sliding planks, trap doors, and secret compartments!

For whatever reason, I never had a Barbie and had limited interest in playing house (who on earth wants to "pretend" to do domestic chores just for "fun"?!)

I may or may not subscribe to a few YouTube channels that demonstrate some of the coolest-looking modern toys that come out...

Alas, all my friends' and relatives' kids are long past this stage, but if I had any friends with little boys, I could see myself spending a sanity-shaking amount of money buying them things like these:

Zombies and dinosaurs and sharks, oh my!!!

These toy sets have a gazillion things you now have to dig, dunk, slice, and dice in order to find all the pieces and then put them together.

My biggest challenge would be... Getting out of the way and reminding myself that these toys would be for the kids -- and NOT me!!

Egregious...

I do believe I have been a bad influence on the girl.

But I do have to mention that if you got a set like that, and tinkered with it in your apartment, nobody would know. Your stuffed menagerie sure ain't telling anybody. I bet even Loqui wouldn't have any catty comments.

We got what we needed when I was growing up. I always wanted a riding mower. I finally bought one when I retired the first time.

Today, I pretty much buy what Mama wants and help my children and grandchildren when they need it. Mama and I go out for lunch regularly, (night driving restrictions limit our dinner outings) and I'm sending my youngest son to college. I also help my church send our youth on missionary trips.

God has blessed me beyond my wildest imagination.

Growing up, I really wished we could have afforded nice stuff for the pets like dogs beds (which can be expensive), toys, etc. They basically got boxes, old blankets, some cheaper toys etc. I felt bad for them. Later on, I did splurge on my pets with nice stuff and I will do so in the future if I can.

Also, we rarely ate out in sit down restuarants growing up (mostly fast food, food courts, etc.). It is something I can afford to do more now. I do wish my family and I ate out more growing up; it would be nice to have those memories.

When personal computers first came out my family couldn't afford them, they were so expensive! And there were so many types of personal computers vying for supremacy!

A few years later, when they started becoming more affordable my family got our first PC. Remember Tandy?

Mine was a 1000HX model:

emU9MTkyLDIwOA

It was 7-bit compared to the emerging standard 8-bit computers, It wasn't great, but it did help us become familiar with using PCs in general. The first video game I ever played on it was Sierra's "King's Quest: Quest for the Crown"

L2txLWFsdC5qcGc

PTgyNSZkcHI9MS41

The graphics were first rate at that time, lol!

My favorite though was Maniac Mansion! I still play that wacky game once in a while. :giggle:

anBn

PTc1MCZxPTc1

Oh the memories!

Now I can afford and do have a gaming laptop and play games with better graphics. But for some reason, those first games are my favorites. I think it was because of the newness of personal computers and the wonder and amazement I felt learning how to use them and what kinds of programs we could use on them.

I'm really thankful to God that He put me in the era as a child, then a teenager when personal computers first came out!

A gameboy, i stole money from my granddads pocket to buy it, the funny thing was my friend at the time stole the gameboy from me, i didnt know this at the time. I learned it later. We never talked since. I got my friends and he got his own friends. I wasnt angry, it taught me a lesson. I stopped stealing and repented from that point also. It taught me the value of a dollar.
