For years I've always wondered what people are speaking of specifically when they reply to a prayer request with "Praying"
When you ask them what they mean by that most everyone you ask gets upset that they are being asked about this as though they really have no idea what it means to pray biblically and they are just following the crowd so to speak saying what they see others say. Praying!
Here's some instructions and thoughts from what the Lord Jesus says in the Word of God concerning prayer:
John 16:23-27 - And in that day ye shall ask me nothing. Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it you.
Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full.
These things have I spoken unto you in proverbs: but the time cometh, when I shall no more speak unto you in proverbs, but I shall shew you plainly of the Father.
At that day ye shall ask in my name: and I say not unto you, that I will pray the Father for you:
For the Father himself loveth you, because ye have loved me, and have believed that I came out from God.
Clearly we see Jesus saying we are to pray directly to the Father in the Name of Jesus and we are instructed believe "Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it you" which is rarely what people are doing when they pray. Most are just hoping, not asking and believing.
Concerning whatsoever, we are ask in prayer according to God's Word, according to what He has promised and not according to carnal desires. We see in James 4:3 that some do not receive because that ask wrongly that they may receive according to their own lusts.
We should be bringing God's promises to Him in prayer, basing what we are asking for and believing for on His promises found in the Word of God.
Isaiah 43:26 - Put me in remembrance: let us plead together: declare thou, that thou may be justified.
We are to declare what God says in His Word if we want the Lord to agree with what we are praying. Praying based on anything other than what God has promised in His Word is an exercise in futility because they is not prayer in agreement with what the Lord says. What God promises is His Will, as in it's what He wants and His children are called to walk after the leading of the Holy Spirit meaning we are to live in agreement with Him and not in agreement with this dark world's ways of being and doing right
Mark 11:23-26 - For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith.
Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.
And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any: that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.
But if ye do not forgive, neither will your Father which is in heaven forgive your trespasses.
Here we see Jesus telling us to speak to our mountain (problem we cannot move ourselves) which is in agreement with Isaiah 43:26 for us to declare that we may be justified. Declare what? What the Lord has promised in His Word. Declare God's will.
In Mark 11:23-26 we are instructed by the Lord to not only speak to the problem, but to also told by the Lord that if we doubt not in our heart and believe those things which we are saying - God's promises, God's will - then we shall have whatsoever we say.
Then notice how Jesus gives us HIS personal promises saying because of what He just said in Mark 11:23, Jesus tells us "What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them." This is Jesus acting on Mark 11:23 Himself and it's His Personal promise that is we BELIEVE what He is telling us, we shall have what we are praying. (and let's forget the modern word of faith junk because James 4:3 disqualifies asking to satisfy our own desires - this is about praying according to the will of the Lord based on what He has promised)
Many if not most have not noticed Jesus is giving His personal guarantee that we will have what we are praying for IF we believe when we pray.
Notice that we are to believe when we pray, not when we see the manifestation of what we are asking for. WHEN WE PRAY! Remember that the the just shall live by faith (Hebrews 10:38,Habakkuk 2:4), and we are to walk by faith and not by sight (2 Corinthians 5:7), and let's not forget we are to follow Abraham's model of faith that he got from walking with the Lord in that we are to like God, call things that be not as though they were (Romans 4:17)
