Hey Everyone,

As I'm getting used to writing "2026" on all my new documents and letters, I unfortunately also ushered in my first "disappointment" of the year.

A family member received some "Caramel Eggnog" coffee for Christmas, and generously gave me some to share. I was utterly astonished at how strong the smell of eggnog was drifting across the room as it brewed, and was excitedly looking forward to a cup of coffee that actually tasted like eggnog!! (Especially since I tried to buy eggnog the week before Christmas -- but every store I went to was out.)

I lifted my cup in blissful expectation, eagerly took a sip, and...

Le sigh.

Not only did it NOT taste anything like eggnog, but it didn't really taste anything like caramel either -- and so I was basically left with a mildly boring, bland (compared to my expectations) cup of just plain old coffee. (Boo!)

BAH HUMBUG!!! I call false advertising!!! Nothing is more disappointing than something that CLAIMS to taste a certain way -- but most certainly does not. And this was even worse because it let off such a heavenly AROMA of eggnog, yet there was not one single sip of eggnog flavor!! Talk about being pulled in for a literal gut punch!!

What products, services, or places have promised ONE THING but actually delivered a COMPETELY DIFFERENT experience than the one you were expecting?

* What products have you tried that left you utterly disappointed? A face cream that didn't iron out the wrinkles? A tool that failed to make the task you bought it for any easier? A plant you thought would flourish and bloom, only to wilt a week later? Foods that looked amazing in the future -- but tasted more like they should be for your pets than for you?

* What experiences have you thought would be amazing, but turned out to be a huge waste of money? Restaurants? Tourist traps? Games or entertainment? Movies and TV shows?

* How about vacations, meetups, or events you were looking forward to, but didn't quite turn out the way you expected?

* Was there anything that could have made these things/experiences any better, or were they pretty much doomed to fail no matter what?!


Nobody likes to be bamboozled. :cry:

But maybe it won't go to waste if we all share entertaining stories about our disappointments together! :)

I think every flavored vape should be accused, tried and convicted of false advertising. You walk down the street and smell cinnabon, but then you turn the corner and it's just Keith and his cloud of lies!

My life left to go to an after wedding party today. She'll be on the road for two days to get to the destination. A niece on her side of the family is getting married. When we first got the invitation I immediately booked rooms for the travel and stay. I thought we were going to a wedding. A few days later we learned we weren't invited to a wedding but to an after wedding party. I'm guessing they were getting married with just themselves and witness at a justice of the peace. When I learned that I cancelled my trip plans. I didn't want to do all that traveling just for a party.

A really big surprise a few days ago was I bought a frozen pizza on the spur of the moment. It was a Wild Mike's Ultimate, was pepperoni, and indicated that it was completely covered. The picture looked good so I put it in the cart and then grabbed a 5 oz bag of pepperoni because it would surely need more. Well, when I got home and pulled the pizza out of the box, for the first time in my life I saw a product that looked just like the picture on the box!!! I added the extra pepperoni anyway and put it in the oven.

We had a good frozen pizza the other day too. Yeah, my wife added extra pepperoni.

I can second your positive review of Mike's Wild Pizza -- I had never heard of the brand until I went to stay with some friends.

Not many stores carry them, but from what I've tried, they're worth the search and about the same price as DiGiorno (but with a lot more toppings.)

anyone can tell anyone that nearly everything out there is poorly made. i'm in the landscape business, antique business & coin busines. concerning landscape tools, nearly every rake is junk, shovels brake easy, brooms last a few year only, leaf tarps rip mostly easy & garbage cans break quite easy especially when overloading them which we all do. i'd rather carry an over loaded garbage can than make a second trip. in 2025, i threw a lot of food out because it spoiled fast. certainly disappointed in the shelf life, poor transportation control, refrigeration & handling at the store. the phone bases for 2 of the LL phones is junk. cheap plastic that weighs nearly nothing. frying pans are absurd. lot's are made poorly. & coffee cups! holy heavens! many are made off balance a slight touch will knock them over & that's with coffee in them!!!i could go on too. restaurants: no problem, we only eat at gourmet restaurants. i just watched a neil diamond tribute band movie with hugh jackman acting. i was disappoint because i thought they scored in too much hurt in the movie. about antiques, everything that you can think of WAS made high quality. silver holloware, silver flatware, samplers, wooden boxes, bottles, all farm & barn tools, all furniture, baggage sacks & many other items. up until 50 or 60 years ago, furniture was made well but after that, nearly all of it is junk. in the coin business, i get a laugh when numismatists & coin shops say they pay higher than anyone else. 1st of all, how would you know that? you would have to call everyone in the business every half hour & ask them what they are paying!!! as for me, i structure deals on small margins to attract more deals. dealers usually will pay $33 to $42 on a silver dollar worth $50. i pay $45 to $47 for each dollar. i earn less money per deal but more in the end of the year because i'm involved in more deals.

I do wonder where we're headed as a society when absolutely everything from coffee cups to cars are made to be disposable. No one is going to be able to afford anything because we won't be able to keep up with replacing everything.

And I often wonder what it was like to work in the days when people could actually take pride in their work, knowing they were crafting something of quality (such as a washing machine or vehicle,) that families could rely on for many years.

I know it's a never-ending cycle where no one wins -- it's often said that people now don't want to work, and at the same time, there's nothing worth building or doing anymore that would make people want to put their hearts into what they're doing.

your last statement is true but phunnneee. sad also. i remember when things were made of quality in the 60's. fortunately for me, i get a lot of free stuff that people throw out when i work at junk jobs. 1 time, everything a guy threw out, i kept! people rebel by not paying their bills because things are junk!

Okay I do have to mention: Fair play, AI will definitely obviate most creativity. I've seen that one coming for a long time. AI can do it cheaper, faster and easier. It will become the go-to for the same reason Walmart put our local bakery out of business. It's not quite as good, but it doesn't cost as much either.

Sell your guitar now, while there's still a sucker who will buy it. Don't bother getting those paint brushes at Hobby Lobby. There's no real point anymore.

(But that's still waaaaaaaay off topic for this thread.)

I listened to the whole thing and I thought that I had already covered most of what he was saying, it seemed straight forward and logical.

I did not see this as fear mongering, simply common sense logic.

But I'll play along. I expect conspiracy theorists will keep hollering "This is the year! This is when THEY finally take complete control!" just like they have every year since I was born.

You'd think by now those dudes would see the pattern... Nope. Here they go again. New year, new possibilities for the gubmint to take control.
 
I was expecting a new grandchild, and he arrived yesterday! 7.7 lbs. 20.5 inches :love:
