Because of what happened during Vietnam they have moved to a volunteer army and then they added drones, robots, and we are about to see tens of thousands of robots, even hundreds of thousands of robots on the battlefield and AI running the tactical battles. A small robot with a machine gun is a much smaller target than a tank and a much cheaper weapon. One Abrams tank requires four men and when you include training costs about $10 million. You could probably get 1,000 robots carrying machine guns at that price and if you lose all 1,000 you still haven't lost one soldier.
Every war came out with its new weapons, Vietnam was the Apache helicopter and F16.
