Salvation by grace through works leaves nothing to rejoice in. It turns the Christian life into a loose tooth you're terrified of losing. The list of requirements never ends: obey, persevere, confess allegiance, abide, avoid backsliding, prove yourself daily. In that system, you become the capstone of your salvation & Jesus becomes a footnote.Rom. 1:17 supports faith, which is the condition for salvation (Eph. 2:8-9) and security (Rom. 11:22, 1Cor. 15:2, Col. 1:22-23, 2Thes. 1:4-5, 2Tim. 2:12, Heb. 3:6&14, 10:35-36, Jam. 1:12, 2Pet. 1:10-11, 2:20, 1John 2:24-25 and Rev. 2:10). Per Paul faith is the instrument of both justification and remaining saved.
Jesus finished the job of atoning for the sins of humanity (John 19:30), but it is up to sinners whether to choose saving faith or ignore GW (Rom. 1:16-3:22).
Re the warning passages: We rejoice because of choosing to keep on believing rather than repent of having saving faith.
We remain justified and continue to be sanctified. LIC, GWH
But Jesus is the Mediator of the New Covenant (Lk 22:20, Heb 8:6, 9:15 & 12:24). A mediator stands between 2 parties to accomplish what they cannot. Jesus is the Author & Finisher of our faith (Heb 12:2). His role is to give eternal life, not negotiate it or co maintain it with human effort (Eph 2:9 & Gal 6:14). He said, I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish (Jn 10:28) & This is the will of Him who sent Me, that I shall lose none of all He has given Me (Jn 6:39).
A works based system requires Jesus to start salvation & the sinner to finish it. But a mediator who needs the condemned party to finish the job is not a mediator at all.
Jesus repeatedly states that eternal life is received by believing, not performing: He who believes has eternal life (Jn 6:47) & He who hears My word & believes... has eternal life & shall not come into condemnation (Jn 5:24 & Rom 8:1). Because eternal life is a present possession at the moment of faith (Jn 14:16, John 5:24 & 6:47). Works cannot be a future condition for keeping it.
As Mediator, Jesus doesn't help you pass judgment. He takes your judgment: He who believes is not judged (Jn 3:18) & the one who comes to Me I will never cast out (Jn 6:37). A works based system puts the believer back on trial every day.
The Mediator's sacrifice is: once for all (Heb 10:10), perfecting forever those who are sanctified (Heb 10:14) & finished (Jn 19:30) & If His sacrifice perfects forever, then works cannot ""un‑perfect"" or ""re‑perfect"" anyone.
The works based view says, You can jump out of His hand. Jesus says: No one can snatch them out of My hand (Jn 10:28) & No one can snatch them out of My Father's hand (Jn 10:29). If the believer can remove himself, then the believer is stronger than both the Son &d the Father. Jesus leaves no such loophole.
The Mediator gives the Spirit as the seal of the covenant: He will give you another Comforter, that He may abide with you forever (Jn 14:16). A works based system requires the Holy Spirit to come & go.
Jesus says the Spirit stays.
When Jesus saved & Holy Spirit baptized Gentiles in Acts 10, He demonstrates the universal pattern: Hear > Believe > Receive Eternal life. No: rituals, perseverance tests, obedience requirements, repentance formulas, probation period. Jesus Himself shows how He saves under the New Covenant me Mediates.
In short, Jesus dismisses works based salvation simply by being the Mediator. He's the author & finisher of our faith, the One who gives eternal life, secures it, perfects forever, seals with the Holy Spirit & finishes the work without requiring the sinner to complete what He already accomplished.
