what is the Abyss?

I was reading and listening to some sermons and they talked about the abyss and have alot of various meanings and Bible references.

I heard the Abyss refers to the sea sometimes because they believed it was bottomless and that the sea was fulled of unclean beings and that is why in Revelations it talks about a world with no sea.

Anyways I wanted to see what your thoughts on the matter was. i'll see if I can find the articles and sermons I was listening to on the matter and post them when I get a chance, but here are the Bible verses cited:

Did a definition search on Abyss and this is what it said,

1. A deep or seemingly bottomless chasm: "a rope led down into the dark abyss"; "I was stagnating in an abyss of boredom".
2. A wide or profound difference between people; a gulf: "the abyss between the two nations".

i do not think its the sea though, it could be the bottomless pit and humans don't know where that is.

When that possesed man ran up to Jesus the legion of demons in the man thought Jesus came to destroy and throw them in the bottomless pit before there time.

The abyss or pit for that matter might be somewhere in Hades maybe?

The KJV uses the word "deep" which has about the same meaning. It is most likely to be Hell because that is the place created for the devil and his angels that they would not want to go. I believe it is Hell.

I believe those books did exist but I do not believe we have them. The Bible never says that fallen angels were with women. It says "the sons of God" which is another term for mankind. You are assuming they were angels. The Bible never says they became demons; you made that up. It's a false doctrine of adding to the Bible. God created giants. They are not from fallen angels. The word "angel" is not in the text in Genesis. It is complete myth. The Bible never says any of those things.

hmmm I am glad God sees our hearts and not just our spoken words if that is the case. yes I will research it and your other posts as well.

I do not really understand this passage.

why did the demons ask not to be cast into the abyss but into the swine, yet the swine still run into the sea to their death?

Is there more to death than physical demise? do the spirits roam the earth or are they stuck in the abyss until judgment day? Do they have to be cast into the abyss? when Jesus and His disciples cast them out of people do they automatically go to the abyss? is it that dry desert place Jesus refers to when He says that if you cast one out and it comes back to find its home empty and swept clean it will go get seven more to take residence in the person? where do the seven more come from? is the dry place on earth or is it below or is it in the spirit realm that is superimposed upon the Earth? Is it figurative? Are these the type of questions people are going to tell me to ask God when we all get to Heaven?

Why did the people still fear and ask Jesus to leave even though He cured the demon possessed man?

Does the name "ten cities" make a difference? It reminds me of the ten crown on the beast in Revelations but that could just be because of the number ten.

did the ex-demon possessed man make any disciples for Jesus?

I guess I'll read the passage again, pray and research and see what it all means.

yes but its not the eternal fire which I think refers to Hell because things come out of it and when creatures get thrown into the eternal fire it says its for eternity but when they get thrown into the Abyss its temporary. you see it in Revelations 20 that Satan is bound there then released for a spell and then thrown into the eternal fiery pit of Hell.

The angels that did that are locked up now in Tartarus 2 Peter 2:4 this is a term for hell but this particular place in hell is only mentioned once only right there, when it talked about people going to hell it uses other terms (hades, gehenna, sheol) never tartarus, so this seems to be a holding place specifically for these angels only.
Now demons are created to be demons they are not spirits of dead people or even offspring from fallen angels nor are they fallen angels. God created them and uses them as judgment for his people, they are used when curses are in effect and when people sin to torment them, so that they might turn around. God always judges his people with the intend that they would turn back to him.
Isa 45:7 I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the LORD do all these [things].
Amo 3:6 Shall a trumpet be blown in the city, and the people not be afraid? shall there be evil in a city, and the LORD hath not done [it]?

"Iamsoandso" you contradicted yourself, the Bible doesn't , it says that these fallen angles are locked up not Nephilim nor their spirits and as you mentioned they became demons and are also locked up but are also "wandering spirits" . This is confusing since they either are locked up or wandering around but they cannot be both! And we know that demons are definitely among us and many are in people, Jesus used to cast them out and so are we commanded to do!
We cast them into the pit (abyss), since this is the place they do not want to go and seem most afraid of...
Furthermore, there were demons before the Nephilim appeared and a spirit of murder was already present when Cain killed Abel.
If demons were only the offspring of the Nephilim , there would not be enough of them as plenty as they are today! and there are multiple more of them than there are people on this earth today!

I was reading and listening to some sermons and they talked about the abyss and have alot of various meanings and Bible references.

I heard the Abyss refers to the sea sometimes because they believed it was bottomless and that the sea was fulled of unclean beings and that is why in Revelations it talks about a world with no sea.

No, but seriously I ran into the same question recently. I just thought the Abyss referred to Sheol where the unsaved dead are tormented until the day of judgment and then are judged and some of them are destroyed forever and others are tormented for eternity. But I also hadn't decided on what to believe about it just yet, so it's good you brougth this up.

Where do you get your info from? Not the Bible. Angels cannot procreate.

If you read Genesis 4 & 5 you read 2 lines, the line of Cain, the line of Seth. the line of Cain were the daughters of men and Seth were the sons of God. Also man has decreased, look at the ages that they live before the flood they all lived over 900 years so they would have all been giants but, after the flood not only did the lifespan decrease but also the size of people as well. God created man perfect and able to eat from the tree of life before sin and since man was created a little lower then they would have been created a little lower in size as well to angels which means Adam and Eve would have been giants.
