*On the right-side panel, click on “world (kosmos - κόσμος)” to see the following:
κόσμος (kosmos) world (G2889)
(Noun Accusative Singular Masculine)
Meaningworld: earth, world system, whole universe; adornment. In some contexts, the world is simply the place where people live, in other contexts (especially in John), the world is a system opposed to God
aggregate = one unified whole vs. individuals = many separate persons
“And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.” (1John 2:2, KJV)
This verse does not change the point, for as the two meanings above show:
the human race external to the Jewish nation, the heathen world, Rom. 11:12, 15;
the world external to the Christian body, 1Jn. 3:1, 13
John Wesley on John 3:16 wrote: “God so loved the world - That is, all men under heaven; even those that despise his love and, will for that cause finally perish.”
The Arminian of today, like Wesley, makes no attempt to prove their assertion that “world’ means each and every individual person. That is a lazy man's interpretation who does not attempt to prove his meaning of "world" in the verse.
