One of my friends is going to enroll in the Salvation Army today. She already works for them in a daycare, but she says today they are going to make it official. I didn't know you could enlist, I thought maybe she was called up. She gets to wear a uniform.

She says that it's just a further step in her walk with God. Kind of like a confirmation. She's already been baptised decades ago. She's single in that her husband left her (he was unfaithful) but she still has her daughters who are adults now.

She's invited me to the service so am going to check it out. I've not had much to do with the Sally's except for going to their op shops where I sometimes donate items. I buy jigsaw puzzles and check out their books. I do respect the Salvation Army's ministry, as the poor live amongst us and Christians aren't meant to snob the poor if they can help save them from living in poverty. Poverty is real you can't turn a blind eye to it.

Actually some of my glad rags I got from the Salvation Army, so they have clothed me. And we will be having morning tea at their service, so they feed me as well. As well as helping out with ministries, ministries have helped me.

I mean as regards to day care, working mothers need carers to help look after their children, especially solo mothers. It's especially harder to be single with young children. Married couples also need daycare because both parents work as well. Not all families can survive on a single income. Something needs to give. eg. you might have food, but you can't pay the rent or bills. If you pay all your bills and rent, you might not have enough for food. And you may need clothes, but you can't afford to buy new ones, so you wear other people's cast offs instead, or what you can find.

I'm sure this is blindly obvious to most people, but those who are well off may sometimes take their life for granted living in their comfortable bubble and not think really be thinking of ways to help the less fortunate. I've had someone question why are their rich Christians and poor Christians, both love God but the rich get rewarded in this life, while the poor need to wait for the next. There's also the parable of the rich man and his camel that couldn't fit through the eye of the needle because he was too fat. Oh and the hoarder who built more storage barns to fit all his stuff, but God required his life that night but he was too busy building his barns.

I was just reading Luke ch 12 lots of instructions given by Jesus on this subject . The most important thing is seek first the kingdom of God and be ready when he comes . He promises to meet all our needs not to be anxious for anything. Yes prayer is so important as staying in his word . I appreciate the peace we have in my Country and neighbouring countries, war is hell . Prayer for peace is so important. I have been single my whole life . Had many opportunities but never was not prepared for settling down . I don’t regret it it’s been a difficult life and for a family it would have been a lot to endure. The Single life is much easier. Gives one much flexibility. I traveled most of North America, met many people, very interesting. But establishing friendships was hard . Churches many of them I can’t go because of false doctrine or practices. Learned to be self sufficient in the word and prayer . More real fellowship is rare but out there somewhere , am kinda in limbo last few years , retired on pension. I enjoyed your story , thought I’d share a bit . I love sharing what the Lord has done for me , I often considered righting a book . I also have a huge inventory of photos , that are sellable. Always wanted to make calendars with scripture on them . Yet to do that too . Read Luke ch 12 God bless as you all do his will .

Oh I should probably give a proper answer to this thread. In certain Christian circles, it seems like there's the idea that everyone is going to have a great leadership calling from God. You're always the next Moses, or Joseph, or David. You're never the next Naphtali, or Hushai, or Arioch. And you're certainly never one of the nameless background characters in the crowd in the Bible. Similarly when we talk about parts of the body of christ, we all talk about people being the hands, feet, eyes, ears, mouth. But there's the liver, spleen, kidneys and fat cells in the body as well. I also think that at least for us westerners, it's hard to feel significant for things other than what we do, so if we want to be significant in God's eyes, we think it requires us to do something for him.
I have a serious question that I honestly don't know the answer to. How does someone truly come to know what God has called them to do? In regard to what you said, we definitely see examples in scripture where people received a direct calling from God, and we also know that God tempers us in the body of Christ as he wills. How do we find out what part of the body we truly have been called to be?

I think people just generally call you on the phone and ask if you can come and help them. I think good works God prepares you to do, and it could be anything that pleases God, because he made all things work together for good for those who love him, who are called according to His purpose.

So if you are doing a good work, maybe it's anything to do with helping others or making things that would be make it easier to help others live 'godly' lives. I recall Jesus giving his disciples nick names or renaming them to what he called them to be. Like Simon was renamed Peter which meant 'rock' and its true Peter really became the rock Jesus called him to be. And the he said 'feed my sheep, feed my lambs' . Peter was a fisherman, and the last time Jesus was with him they went fishing, and they caught 153 fish enough to for a feast that could feed a whole village.

Sometimes people call you and ask you to be a friend, and they genuinely do need one. Friendship is a precious gift you can give someone. Wasn't Peter one of Jesus closest friends?

Another thing was Jesus needed to pay a tax (temple tax for upkeep of temple) but they didn't have any money and they didn't want to sell all their fish just to make money to pay the tax - the fish were given away for others to eat.

So the next time Peter went fishing, he caught a fish that had a coin in it and they used that to pay the tax. So we don't have to worry so much about money God will provide in ways that we don't expect.

Thank you for your reply. I think that your examples, with the exception of Peter, pretty much fall under the category of bearing one another's burdens, thereby fulfilling the law of Christ, and I agree with that. What I don't understand is how we differentiate between a hand, foot, elbow, knee cap, etc., in relation to us being individual members of the collective body of Christ. There has to be some sort of distinction, doesn't there? Is it just that the mouth has more of a speaking role whereas a hand has more of a helping-hand sort of role? How do we know which of them we have truly been called to?

I think it's a metaphor so it's not like some are called to be literal hands or kneecaps. As for what God is calling a person to specifically, well start with what's revealed in scripture that God calls all believers to do. Add in what you seem to have been naturally made for the kind of thing you do without thinking about it or can't keep yourself from doing when the opportunity arises, and remember that sometimes God's will is less about what you do and more about how you're doing it ( ie your character). And if you keep trying to do something and it just keeps not working out, maybe God is trying to tell you no.

Please keep us posted on how things go, and best wishes to you! :)
I tried to leave this on your profile page, but it was too many characters. First, the bad news. When you see me posting here on a Saturday, you can be sure that something is wrong because Saturday is my biggest sales day of the week. Last night, my phone kept ringing between the hours of 12:00 a.m. and 1:00 a.m., and I finally picked it up. Once again, it was a drunk co-worker of mine, only this time there were two of them. Apparently, they find it humorous to keep on interrupting my sleep. I tried driving into work this morning, but I had to turn around because I was totally exhausted, and here I am.

Now, the potentially good news. My phone just rang, and I got invited to interview for a Manager's job that is very close to my home. I applied for it a few days ago, but I honestly didn't think that they would even consider me for the position. My interview is scheduled for Monday at 12:00 noon. If you wouldn't mind saying a prayer for me that my interview goes well, then I would appreciate it. Having worked in sales for so long, I am definitely going to need to pitch myself on Monday. Maybe it will work out. We will see.

You know, you can probably schedule your phone for do not disturb mode so that calls don't ring through during certain hours like when you're sleeping. If I had stupid co-workers that kept getting drunk and calling me, I would definitely do that.

Thank you. I plan on doing that tonight.

Burden bearer...yea, it's often the case that's the work we need to do, but many hands make light work.
I mean, you may think of work as labour, and it is. Emotional labour even. It's still work thats good work. The thing with Jesus as that we labour with him and He allows times of rest. He's not going to drive us like a slave.

In terms of members of the church body I've asked God about this, and at first I thought I was an appendix, sort of useless and essential at the same time. But actually I'm kind of more the fingers, since I type so much.

I have no idea what I am. I have long felt that I should be a mouth, but that doesn't seem likely. Can you be a heart? I do care about people. That must count for something. When I am working at different locations, I always seem to be hands because people regularly ask me to grab or carry something for them, even though I don't actually work for those companies. Who knows? Maybe I'm just a toenail. 😞

Sure you can be a heart! Why not?
🫀Do you like pumping? A heart pumps blood around the body. And we all need blood, life is in the blood. Do you donate blood? Hospitals always need them for people.

Don't knock toenails. If we didn't have them we'd just be stubbing our toes all the time.

Last night, I did what you suggested. This morning, I noticed three missed calls from my co-workers. Apparently, they had attempted to bother me again. I slept pretty good last night. Hopefully, I will make it through my workday without any incidents. Thanks for your suggestion.

I am at a point in life where I'm very interested in hearing about the lives of other singles, especially those who have been at it for a long time. I learn the most when people are honest about both the pro's and con's, the ups and downs, the joys and sorrows.

It sounds like you have made a big impact through your travels and the people you have met and helped along the way!!

Congratulations on your retirement and if you ever write that book or make those calendars, please let us know! :D

I really hope the new job that close to your location will work out!! :)

Here's a very blessed interview on Monday! 🙏🏼

You're asking great questions!

This could just be me, but I have to wonder if maybe Christians and the church have put too much emphasis on "You Have a Great Calling From God!" and "We Are All a Certain Part of the Body of Christ!"

And so we spend our whole lives seeking, worrying, and spending vast amounts of time, energy, and money trying to find What That One Ultimate Calling or Ultimate Part of the Body We Are Meant to Be. I've done this all my life as well, because that's what I was always told.

I think part of the allure of Christianity is that it gives many people a feeling of meaning in what might seem like an otherwise mundane existence. This thought that the Almighty God has this very special, very unique calling and purpose in our lives suddenly gives our life meaning, like someone who has been told they're on a secret mission only they can fulfill.

I'm in my 50's now, and I pay special attention to those who have walked the Christian life for many decades of life, because I want to know what it's looked like and how it's still going. Many people I've met in their 60's and up are still wondering "What is my calling? What is my purpose? What part of the Body am I?"

I'm coming to the conclusion that I think God gives us all a calling and a purpose -- to develop our relationship with Him over our lifetime, to follow and obey what He wants us to do, and to serve and to witness to other people.

On the surface, it sounds very generic. But when push comes to shove, it's all very individualized -- and not nearly as glamorous as what Christianity seems to make it out to be.

If someone asked Moses, "What is your calling? What is your purpose? What part of the Body are you?" I don't know what he would answer. The Bible says Moses was the most humble person on earth. God specifically raised Moses in the midst Egyptian culture to lead His people out of Egypt and be part of an unprecedented work from the Lord.

But what would Moses say? That his purpose was to be God's vehicle to part the Red Sea? That his calling was to carry down the stone tablets containing the 10 commandments? That his part in the Body was to be a thorn in Pharaoh's side and then witness the 10 worst plagues the world had ever known?

Maybe.

But I have to wonder if Moses would mention things such things as having to listen to the people's constant complaints (about EVERYTHING,) then pleading with his own life that God would spare these obnoxious, rebellious people -- then fall into the same cycle, bringing about God's wrath -- over, and over, and over again. How much fun does THAT sound for a calling? And how many people would sign right up?

I think that's what we all miss. We expect some great calling in which we're moving mountains and calling down lightning and performing miracles left and right.

And some of those things CAN happen. They certainly did in the lives of some of the spiritual giants the Bible tells us about. But I think most days, their lives looked very much like our own. Like us, they dealt with the mundane tasks of trying to earn a living and feed themselves. They took care of others, dealing with sickness, filth, and poverty, they grew weary of dealing with others in the middle of messes they made for themselves. They had families, with all the drama and more that we deal with today.

And I'm sure there were many more everyday, "boring" days such as those than of watching God part large bodies of water.

Many years ago, I worked at a retail store in which we all (including managers) took turns cleaning the restrooms. One time, the job fell on a young woman, but since she was pregnant, the manager asked the next person on the list to do it (a man of about age 60.) He absolutely refused. I was floored that this man cared about his own, pride or whatever it was, rather than the health and safety of a young mother and her unborn child.

And so after watching this man quibble like a child refusing to clean his room, I just told the manager I would do it. Did I want to? Absolutely not (after all, I had my own turn coming around.) But I knew that's what God was calling me to do in that moment. And the manager said, "Never, in my whole career, have I ever known of anyone who volunteered to clean the bathrooms."

Hopefully, this was a sign to this manager that the people of God are different. (And as an aside, the older man who refused was later fired because customers were complaining of how strongly he smelled of alcohol. He had some... things going on in his life.)

Now do I always listen, follow, and obey? Absolutely not!!! For this one story, I could tell you a thousand more where I put God's name to shame and still feel guilt.

But as time goes on, I feel that waiting for some big revelation of a calling or purpose or definition of a part might be a distraction or hindrance to, as Nike would say, "Just Do(ing) It." I don't have to wait for a big sign of what my mission is, I just have to be aware of what God wants me to do in given situations and times.

If I had to put a label on my calling or decide what part of the body I am, I would say, I'm a small piece of the connective tissue. My job is to try to help the other parts understand and work together better. I think the Body of Christ can also be thought of as a smooth-running machine, of which, I'm designed to try to help bring the nuts and bolts together (which is quite fitting, as my CC friends will tell you how nutty I am!) :D

In the end, I've realized (just for myself) that a strict definition or clearly outlined mission statement doesn't matter for my life, and maybe God will never give me one.

This morning I was doing dishes for someone because they are being pulled in a hundred very difficult directions -- and in the middle of the scrubbing, suds, and scraps -- I knew I was right in the center of my calling, whatever it may be.

God bless you, @passion84god, in seeking the Lord in everything you do! :)

Maybe I'm just a toenail. 😞

Loved this insight, @Lanolin!!!

I couldn't agree more.

@passion84god -- from the answers I've seen you give to people (particularly in a certain thread,) you are a very effective toenail!!!

You are helping to guard and protect people's feet as they continue to walk forward in Christ. :)
